I don’t know if I ever told you guys this, but I live in an apartment building on the 12th floor. Now there are certain advantages and disadvantages to something like that. For one thing I have one of the best views one could think of. Especially with the fireworks at New Year’s Eve I have a front row seat and almost feel like I am high up in the sky right in the middle of the explosions. It’s usually also not a very tempting target for burglars. I mean to steal stuff from a home, and then to move that stuff twelve floors down is not a particular fun prospect to look forward too. But then there are the disadvantages. Noisy neighbours being one of them. With people above, below and to the right and left of you, it can at times be total chaos. But eh, that’s not necessarily restricted to living that high up. No, one of the things I’m most afraid of is fire. The idea of being trapped at the twelfth floor with a fire burning below you, and no exit in sight, is the stuff of nightmares. Then again I’ve learned in life that things can always be worse. Like for instance trying to stay alive while stuck in an appartment in the middle of a virus outbreak that turns people into bloodthirsty zombies. Suddenly that fire sounds quite enticing…
It’s the start of a brand new day for Oh Joon-woo, who wakes up alone in his apartment that he usually shares with his sister and parents. Joon-woo is a gamer, and of course one of the first things he does is switch on his computer jumping into what’s supposed to be another fun online gaming day. However, the poor guy has no idea what’s in store for him. When a few members of his gaming party urge him to switch on his television, he does so, and to his horror he sees quite a disturbing newscast. A mysterious virus is sweeping across the nation turning people into horribly violent psychopaths that attack and even eat the non-infected. Not long thereafter Joon-woo hears terrifying sounds coming from outside, and when he runs to his balcony it’s a scene of utter and complete mayhem. Men and women are running everywhere, attacking and eating each other, and soon they are banging on the doors of Joon-woo’s apartment. Trapped and completely alone, the young gamer has only himself to rely on, and has to try and find a way to survive. But that’s not an easy thing. His food supply is running dangerously low, he lives 8 floors up, and is surrounded by the zombielike creatures. Will Joon-woo be able to stay alive…
In 2016 Korea produced one of the best zombie apocalypse movies ever made Train to Busan. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure to see that one I definitely urge you to do so. Even if you are not a fan of the genre, it’s a movie that is so good, and contains so much emotion, that you often forget it’s about zombies. Even my father, who absolutely hates the flesh eating creatures, highly enjoyed it. This year a sequel for the film called Peninsula was made. I say sequel, but it’s actually a stand alone movie that just takes place in the same world as the first film. I haven’t yet seen it, but I have heard it’s quite good, but a more straightforward movie and not as strong as the original. And now we have #Alive, yet another zombie film, also made in Korea. One would almost think there is something the government of that country is not telling us. Train to Busan raised the bar very high for the genre, and it’s almost unfair to compare new movies to that one. But just to get it out and then proceed with the review, no this movie is not as good as that one. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable though!
There have been quite a few films that focus on a single location with a lone protagonist who is trying to survive in some form or other. While technically this film isn’t about one person, more on that in a few, it’s definitely the case for the majority of the movie. And one of the most important things for a film like that to work is to have an actor who can carry a film on his lone shoulders. Actor Yoo Ah-in has the honor of fulfilling that role in this movie, and he does so admirably. He’s a very charismatic guy, who is at times a little bit clueless (well his character is anyway), but certainly is brave and has a drive to stay alive. I would have liked to see a little bit more character development, as we honestly know very little about him, apart from the fact that he is a gamer, and lives with his family. That said, it’s hard not to like this guy, and you simply want him to get out alive, because really imagine yourself in his position. It’s enough to drive anyone completely mad. Later in the film, another character is introduced played by actress Park Shin-hye. I really liked her!
Without giving too much away, she is one tough female that is more than a match for the infected, and she had this happy go lucky spirit, that at times also brought some great comic relief. So this being a zombie flick one would expect buckets of gore and blood flying everywhere. Honestly though, that is not really the case here. The zombies look really disgusting and are also a bit more smart than one usually sees in these type of films, but the gore factor is relatively mild here. There are a few scares here and there, but it’s not a movie that’s truly terrifying. It’s a film that never becomes boring though, and doesn’t waste any time in getting to the point. This does mean that because of that it’s not a film that has an Oscar winning script so to speak. But well honestly not every film in this genre needs to be another Train to Busan. Sometimes it’s just nice to be entertained, and on that front this movie certainly delivers. #Alive doesn’t reinvent the zombiegenre, but it does provide a solid and highly enjoyable ride, that you won’t be disappointed in when the credits start to roll. It’s available to watch on Netflix right now! If you live an apartment building like me though, it does make you consider if maybe it’s time to start up those moving plans.
I give #Alive a 8 out of 10 score.
Just like your dad, my mum isn’t a fan of zombie films but she’s watched Train to Busan three or four times – she just loves it! This one sounds like an enjoyable film, I’ll have to watch it with her ☺️ thanks for the review!

I think what makes Train to Busan such a good watch, even for non zombie movie watchers, is that it’s really a very emotional story, combined with some great characters. The gore and blood also isn’t too over the top either😊
Hope you and your mum will enjoy this movie too! Thanks for the comment 😀

This does sound rather enjoyable! I live on the 7th floor right now and i had two fire evacuations already! If there were zombies I would be so doomed! I still have my plan of making a huge armor of all my plushies though! .. Like if I am one big ball of cotton they cant bite me!

Haha….you know? I think that might actually work! Have to keep that one in mind lol 😂😂
We have had three fires here so far, one very close, and it’s something I always fear the most.
As for the movie, it really was a fun film. It’s certainly nothing groundbreaking or anything, but well as I said, that doesn’t always have to be the case. 😊

I’ve scrolled past this movie several times on Netflix, but now you have me intrigued. Maybe the next rain day I’ll give it a go

Well, that’s good to hear! It’s certainly a film that is good to watch on a rain day😊😊 I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did! 😀😀

Thank you! It really was a fun film, not as good as Train to Busan, but definitely a good watch😊😊 Ps…did you hear that the Walking Dead is going to end?

No I hadn’t, but it’s probably time I think.

It’s going to end at season 11, but…it will get 24 episodes, and even better. In 2023, we are getting a new show that will focus on Daryl and Carrol😀😀😀

I’ll have to think about that, I’m walked out! 🤣

I’ve gotten a bit zombied-out over the past few years, so I’ve gotten picky about which movies and books I read. I was intrigued by this though, and already have it in my queue, and your review has further increased my interest.

I know what you mean Kim 😊 Even though I love the genre, at certain points enough is enough. But luckily sometimes there are a few good ones that pop up, and this is one of them. I hope you will enjoy it when you see it😀

Awesome, I love the look of this. I’m not a huge zombie fan but do enjoy many of the films with them. I loved Train to Busan and have been a fan of Korean films for a while, so I think is right up my alley. The idea of a lone person trapped, trying to stay alive while zombies rampaged, brought to mind the British movie, Stalled, where a janitor is stuck, of all places, in the women’s restroom when the zombies arrive. Certainly not one I’d put high up on any list, but fun, just the same. Great review, thanks for the heads up, I’ll look for this one.

Haha….Stalled huh? Never heard of that one, but honestly that sounds pretty crazy and fun. I will keep my eyes out for it. I love Korean movies/shows myself a lot as well, so when this one showed up in the Netflix list, it was pretty much a no brainer. It’s definitely a good film, not as good as Train to Busan, but that one is honestly almost impossible to beat😊

After reading this I may give this a go, but I am especially intrigued by Train to Busan which sounds brilliant!

Ooh…well trust me….go watch Train to Busan first. It is without a doubt the best Korean film I’ve ever seen. It’s utterly amazing! If you are interested I have written a review for that one as well, which you can find here: https://raistlin0903.wordpress.com/2017/06/12/train-to-busan-korean-movie-2016/
While #Alive certainly was entertaining, it doesn’t come close to this one😊😊

This sounds like fun. I’ve been seeing it a lot lately and have been wondering if it was the next Train to Busan too. Your review gives me more of an idea of what to expect from it now, that’s for sure. I do fear that the story might be a bit less original though but if it’s done right, I can imagine how fun it must be! I’ll maybe keep it in the back burner for when I crave for a zombie apocalypse movie now. Great review, Michel!

Yeah, admittedly the story takes a bit of a backseat in this film but honestly it’s such an energetic and fun film, that I didn’t really find that annoying in this case. It’s a great and fun zombie movie, with some pretty good action, great characters and even a bit of humor to keep it upbeat. All in all, this was a really fun watch, and well Train to Busan is pretty much in a class of it’s own, so not a real surprise it’s not as good as that one. I hope you will enjoy the film when you get around to it! 😀😀

I was wondering the Same thing – what’s happening in Korea, culturally / politically, to produce this wave of zombie horror?🤔 Well, lucky us, horror fans😄 Im adding Train to Busan to this years Halloween itinerary 🚞🧟♂️🧟♀️

Lol….well, maybe we will find out at Halloween? When they present their secrets to the world and we find out that the zombies are about to invade from Korea? 🤔🤔🤔 Would make a great movie haha!😂😂
But yeah this was a fun film, not as good as Train to Busan, but hey, that one was in a class of it’s own 😊😊
Cool! That’s good to hear !😀

I know I would go down easily in a zombie apocalypse… but on the bright side, I wouldn’t be fighting for a good selfie pick in the midst of one and risk being exposed, so maybe I have a better chance than I think?

Haha…I think if the zombie apocalypse would go down someday, you would make a very good chance. With all the manga you have read, you have enough things to prepare yourself for it: and hey, some manga make excellent weapons won’t they? 😂😂

Well, there’s some bizarre synchronicity – I *acquired* this film yesterday too. 😉
Might save it for October/Halloween but good to know I’m in such esteemed company in viewing it. Nice post! 🙂

Haha…that is quite bizarre indeed😊😊 And thank you!
It’s definitely a fun film, as mentioned not Train to Busan good, but still an enjoyable watch, and certainly one that’s perfect for Halloween!😀

I too live in an apartment, so I really understand how you feel. I totally feel the same way as you. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this film as well, mainly because I like Park Shin-Hye and can’t wait to see her films. Thank you for sharing, this one is definitely on my to-watch list. As always, love your reviews! Stay safe, Michel! 🙂

I really enjoyed this movie too! You know I’m not a huge fan of zombies, but I loved Train to Busan, and this movie was also very likable. I really like stories mostly set in one location since they tend to be very character driven, so that was a big plus here. It also had enough thrills to keep up the suspense while not being overly gory. I’m also a fan of Park Shin Hye, so it was great to see her. A pleasant surprise overall 🙂

Could not agree more, it really was a surprise for me as well, as I expected very little of it. I really like movies set in one location myself as well. Depends a bit on the story and the actors involved, but yeah if done well, those can be my favorite films. This really was an example of a movie done right 😊

Great review, you had my attention at zombies! This one’s definitely going on my watch list. Shame that it isn’t as good as Train to Busan. But you’re right of course, that one did set the bar a little high. 😉

Thank you!😊 haha, I think it’s quite tough for any zombie movie to be as good as Train to Busan was, but well, this one certainly was quite the fun ride and pretty enjoyable. Definitely recommend it. Hope you enjoy!😀

I love zombie flicks and was actually watching this a few days ago. I didn’t get to finish it (I forgot why), but I wasn’t planning to because I wasn’t really taken in by Oh Joon-woo or hooked on the story. But I do have Train to Busan high on my list, so maybe I’ll watch that today. Btw, thanks for mentioning other shows too. I think I saw #Alive while on Netflix but I didn’t know of Peninsula.

Fair enough😊 The story in this one was pretty weak atmittedly, and the character development also wasn’t done too well😊 That said, I did really enjoy this one well enough, but then again I’m a zombie movie fan so there is that😂
Train to Busan is a totally different story though: not only is is to date still one of my alltime favorite Korean movies, it’s also a very good story with very likeable characters. And it really has this blockbuster feel to it as well. I think you will enjoy it!😀
You are welcome, and thanks for visiting and you comment! Always appreciate it 😀
