I think it’s a safe bet to say that even if you don’t like comic books, everyone has probably heard of the name Spiderman. One of the most popular comic book characters ever created, he has been webslinging his way throughout hundreds of comics as far back as 1962. Every superhero of course also needs some foes to fight, and Spiderman is definitely not an exception to that rule. Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Vulture are just a few of the names that our friendly neighbourhood spider has had to face over the years. However, there will always be an enemy that is just a little bit more memorable than all of the others combined. And for Spiderman that foe was introduced way back in 1988: Venom. This horrific looking character became an instant fan favorite, and fans were overjoyed to hear that he would be making an appearance in the Spiderman 3 movie from 2007 starring Tobey Maguire. Sadly the movie wasn’t very good and Venom himself was woefully underused. Okay, enough with the history lessons. This year Venom has finally gotten his own movie, weirdly enough with his nemesis Spiderman being absent. So can a movie like this work like that? Well, the short answer is: yes, it most certainly can.
Eddie Brock is an investigative journalist that seems to have it made. He is soon to marry the love of his life Anne Weying, and he has a job that seems to be going very well for him. As is usally the case when things go well, it’s all about to come crashing down on him. The Life Foundation, a bio-engineering corporation that Anne works for, has been conducting experiments with something they have found in outer space. It’s CEO, a man named Carlton Drake seems to be a very benovelent man, but this is all a front. Eddie has become very suspicious of him especially when he is approached by one of the employees of the company, Dora Skirth. She tells Eddie about the experiments that have been going on and helps him enter the building one evening to find proof. However, while investigating, the hapless journalist inadvertently becomes infected by a parasitic lifeform. Not just any lifeform though, but one that gives him powers that have never before been seen on Earth. It has yet to be determined if the entity that calls itself Venom is a friend or a foe though. Meanwhile Carlton Drake will stop at nothing to get his lifeform back, no matter who will die in the process….
I’m seriously beginning to hate the critics these days. This movie has been torn to shreds by pretty much every single one of them and I have to wonder if some of them have even seen the movie. I said it quite recently in a review for Skyscraper I think that in general the critics have made it a sport to trash films that only offer fun. The problem is though that when people start to read those “reviews” their mindset is already influenced and some might even avoid going to the film altogether. Which would be a real shame as Venom is simply put a really fun film. While it’s certainly not perfect, it doesn’t deserve all the bashing that is currently directed at it by the so called experts. Eddie Brock is played by one of my favorite actors from the current era, Tom Hardy. He is a man who can pretty much handle every role they throw at him. In this film, he plays a character that is a bit of a loser for lack of a better word, but still comes out on top by becoming a (anti-) hero. I wouldn’t say it’s his best performance if I’m honest, but still he looks like he had a lot of fun in playing the role.
But besides playing the role of Eddie, he also performs the voice of the alien symbiote Venom. The scenes where he is having discussions with himself and his alien alter ego provided some of the funniest moments in this movie. I love it when Venom just wants to go all out and eat people, but Brock tries to reason with this monster. It was surprising to me that this film contained a lot of (dark) humor. I honestly did not expect to find that in this movie, but it really worked. The rest of the actors in this film just simply don’t have very memorable parts. Michelle Williams who is always an accomplished actress plays the love interest of Eddie. But her role was to small for her to be able to really shine. The relatively unknown actor Riz Ahmed was cast as the villain Carlton Drake but I honestly didn’t find his role very impressive. It was too flat to really have that evil edge so to speak. Then again that also could have something to do with the script which wasn’t one of the strongest ones I have seen in these type of films.
However the action and CGI sequences more than made up for this. When you first see the full Venom suit make an appearance it is really an extraordinary sight. It serves as a welcome reminder to see how much computer generated special effects have really progressed. The film was a bit slow in the first half hour or so, but then kicks into full gear, and I really found myself entertained for most of it’s runtime. Another complaint I have heard a number of times is that this movie didn’t get an R-rating. Granted Venom’s character certainly is violent, and the film had most of that violence shown off screen, but that didn’t mean that the movie was any worse because of that. So in the end Venom is another example of how the critics again rather unfairly treated this film as total garbage. It’s not the best superhero movie ever made, nor is it perfect, but it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable film that’s well worth seeing in the theatres. In other words, don’t always believe everything people write (including this post). Just go and see it with an open mind, and form your own opinion on it. You might be very surprised…
I give Venom a 8 out of 10 score.
As you know, I rarely bother with comic-book adaptations, but this one has a secret weapon, Tom Hardy. That gets my interest.
Riz Ahmed if British too of course, and quite well-known here. He was outstandingly good in ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ (2012), which I recommend if you have never seen it.
Best wishes, Pete.

Tom Hardy really is truly terrific actor, and he certainly makes this film even more worth the watch. I hope you will enjoy it, despite this not being your usual cup of tea so to speak.
As for your recommendation, no I haven’t but having just googled and seeing that it also stars Kiefer Sutherland and Liv Schreiber, plus a very interesting storyline, I’m definitely going to check this one out at some point. Thank you for the recommendation! 😊😊

I learned a long time ago to ignore critical reviews of pop-corn style films. Action, monster movies, creature features, and pretty much any kind of horror movie tend to get dreadful reviews and yet I love so many of them. Venom is one I want to see once it gets a DVD release as the promotional videos have looked really fun and hopefully I’ll enjoy it when I get a chance to watch it.

Yeah, I always did too. But it really seems to me, that it’s getting worse. I have seen a lot of youtube videos from non critics reviewing the movie and pretty much all of them had a great time, and said that they just can’t understand why this film is receiving so much hate. It’s a really annoying trend, and it just always influences the regular movie going audience.
But..that said, this is definitely a fun film. It’s not the greatest thing you will ever see, but it doesn’t always have to be. I hope you will enjoy the film when you get to see it! 😊

It worked for me. I followed Venom a lot as a long time fan of Spiderman. My only dislike was that no other Marvel heroes or villains were brought in where an opportunity to do so did exist.

Well….honestly…I don’t know either 😊 But, the way the critics are bashing it right now, has truly been ridiculous. It’s a film that is just great popcorn fun…nothing really special, but with a lot of dark humor in it. (and that last part might be something you will enjoy). Plus Tom Hardy is outstanding as always. In the end though: just don’t take my word for it. If you do see it, I would love to hear your thoughts on it! 😊

I was originally excited to get a separate Venom movie, because to this day I refuse to watch Spiderman 3, although now I’m free to watch it since I know there’s a better portrayal of Venom and I can totally overlook how horrible that movie was lol. So, thanks for reigniting my excitement for the new Venom movie! P.s. your captions are making me lol irl…while I’m at work…so that’s embarassing! 🙂

I haven’t been paying attention to a lot of mainstream movies or the critics, but I’m surprised a Marvel movie would get lambasted on by the critics since they usually praise anything they do from what I’ve seen. Tom Hardy is definitely a better choice for Venom compared to Topher Grace in Spider-man 3. Speaking of which, I find it interesting that much like Ryan Reynolds, both of them have played a Marvel and DC character.

Yeah, it might have something to do with the fact that this film is from sony and technically doesn’t belong to the marvel cinematic universe (whole thing with licensing and things like that). But I don’t know. It’s getting treated really unfairly, and while I won’t deny that this was the best movie ever made, it was certainly very entertaining. Haha, yeah, that is quite unique indeed. Tom Hardy is a terrific actor, and he played such a great Bane in Batman. This role, while not the best he has ever done, was still very entertaining 😊

Gotcha. I wasn’t sure about the licensing or distribution situation for Venom, but that makes sense. Don’t get me started on the controversy on critics getting barred from screenings from real Marvel Studios movies for giving bad reviews though. Tom Hardy is a good actor and he is someone who could be a good Venom from what I’ve seen of the trailers.

The reason I got interested in movies was because of my parents. They literally forced me and my brother to sit and watch movies. They have a good taste and it helped a lot. I remember Spider-Man came on one of the local channels and my mom who usually only let’s us not study on Fridays gave us an extra day off from studying to watch this movie. She said it’s worth it. I knew nothing of spider Man but I was a fan from then on. (Thanks Mom). Also venom didn’t get a good role as I would have liked in the spidernan movie like you said, and it’s nice to see they have made a movie entirely for Venom. Also, I agree completely about critics shredding movies to pieces. Sometimes I think they take the word ‘critic’ a little too seriously. Sure you can point out faults, but a lot of people put in their imagination, creativity and hard work into it and no matter how bad it turns out, I honestly don’t agree with the method of literally annihilating a movie in a review. Becaise of all that I love the bloggers who review things on WordPress. The reason I started reviewing too was because I wanted to talk about movies, books and everything from the point of view of people like me with normal lives who just seek good entertainment. (Whoops I blabbered all over your comments again) Loved your post too Michel, I think you would understand that from the length of my comment!

Haha, well first off I never think you blabber at all. I always love reading your comments, so really never worry about that for a second 😊
I agree with you. It’s okay if you don’t like a movie but just to completely destroy it like what is happening now with this film, is just going too far in my opinion. Some of the reviews are just not even explaining exactly why the film is so bad, but just poor on the hate. And it’s a real shame, as there are always people that believe those things and will avoid the film because of that. Good for you on those reviews! You always do a great job with them, like the one you wrote yesterday, and I very much enjoy reading them.
Also definitely good of your mother to let you have a day off to watch Spiderman.
Venom really is a fun film, and I hope you will enjoy it as well, when you get a chance to see it 😊 Thanks for this great comment 😀

Everyone has different tastes, but it does feel like lately critics and regular movie goers have very different opinions on what a good film is. I can understand some people thinking that Venom should be an R-rated flick, as he is a dark character. Not everything has to be an R though. The success of Deadpool is probably what has caused this demand for mature rated super hero releases.

Yeah..I absolutely agree. Everyone has different tastes. But one youtube channel said it best: “I don’t care if people hate a film. That’s fine. But what I do hate is people totally destroying a film without really explaining why. Just saying it’s stupid…is well just stupid”. And that’s what’s happening with this movie and the critics right now. Luckily though the genereal public seems to like it, so that’s a good thing. Even though it wasn’t R-rated, there was still enough brutality in it, so I didn’t really miss that R-rating 😊

I definitely despise critics when it comes to superhero movies especially. Their standards are ridiculous and their complaints are excessively harsh. They simply don’t understand why most people go watch a movie and try to fit everything in their own mold of what a good movie really is. I for one had a fun time with this! It has flaws, but it didn’t ruin the movie at all. And with Tom Hardy leading it all, I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed by one of my favourite actors ever hahah I personally loved the interaction between Brock and Venom. They were genuinely fun, even if it did feel like it softened up Venom a bit too much too quickly. I hope they expand this Sony Marvel Universe and not comply with critics… Great review as always Michel! 🙂

Thank you so much, and I am glad that to hear that you enjoyed the movie as well 😊 Sure, as you saw the film certainly wasn’t flawless, but above all I really had fun with the film, and it’s just gotten way too harsh reviews. It seems that critics are forgetting to really be objective and don’t judge a movie normally anymore, but automatically dimiss it when it’s not a film that is up to their “normal” standards. Whatever they may be lol 😂. But luckily the general public is enjoying this film…so that’s the most important thing. And of course: Tom Hardy was excellent as always! 😀

I get a similar impression from both critics, and audiences when it comes to certain movies. I keep it in mind before deciding what to watch, but don’t make it the deciding factor typically in choosing what I choose to watch.
I do like Tom Hardy. The few movies I’ve seen him in were pretty good. Seems like he’s the main reason to check it out. From the trailer, it didn’t look like my kinda thing, but if it hits any streaming site I might give it watch. Might not be on the level of Logan which I adore, but if it can possibly provide me entertainment for about 2 hours like Deadpool no harm in giving it a watch.

Yeah, it’s pretty much as if people have almost forgotten to have fun at films. I don’t know what it is. Was this movie perfect? Naw…of course not, but it was solidly entertaining, and I really had fun watching it. I usually ignore critics reviews as well, and not lot myself get influenced by them. Sadly though, there also enough people that think differently 😢
Tom Hardy really is terrific. He has had some truly great roles, both in tv shows and movies, and can pretty much take on any role.
Logan certainly is a much better movie than this one, won’t lie to you there, but I think there is still enough enjoyment to be had in this film. I hope you will like it, and thank you for your comment 😊😊

I don’t know what’s wrong with critics either or why they feel everything needs to be perfect… It’s like, if you’re not a fan you’ll probably not get it. Or even if you are a fan, how about loosening up a bit and enjoying things?
I get that the movie might not be perfect but jeez, is it that bad? I haven’t actually read any reviews apart from this one so I can’t comment on the critics’ or the public’s response to it but if it’s that grating I’d rather go watch the movie without knowing about them. Because it’s like you said, it’ll influence my opinion and I don’t want that.
