I grew up in the 80’s and for me that was a time that I remember fondly for two things: saturday morning cartoons, and the wonderful toys that these cartoons got their inspiration from. When I was a kid I used to get up at about 7 o’clock in the morning on saturday, turn on the tv to Sky Channel and there it was: the program that set my young eyes alight: Fun Factory. For the first two hours or so, Fun Factory was okayish. But things became really interesting when the “big three” came on: M.A.S.K., He-man and Transformers. Ahhh..to think back on those days, even though they are so many years ago (jeezzzzz I really AM getting old), just brings a smile to my face. When you look at the cartoons from this era and compare them to the golden oldies from the 80’s one can only say that they just don’t make them like they used too. I was and still am a huge Transformers fan (like many kids back in those days). But one of the biggest rivals of Transformers, a dude with a big sword called He-man, honestly failed to impress me. I never bought a He-man toy, and I really did not enjoy the cartoon as much.
Now, thirty years later, I came into posession of the complete series of He-man and the Masters of the Universe on dvd. And…I am loving it. For some reason I have found a new appreciation of the cartoon, but that is a story for another day. As is most often the case when I all of a sudden have a new obsession, I want to find out more about it. And that brings me to this incredible tome that was released a few years back by Dark Horse comics. He-man and the Masters of the Universe Mini Comic Collection reproduces the comics that came with the toys. Well as I was never interested in the toys in the first place I did not even know of the existence of these comics until I read about this book. The first thing you will notice is how thick this book is (and for that matter how much it weighs). With a massive 1232 pages it will take you a while to get through it all. So what exactly does this book offer you?
This being a comic collection it will not come as a huge surprise when I tell you this humongous book contains comics, and a lot of them. Nearly 70 comics in total are collected here, ranging from the orginal 1982 toylines of He-man and his sister She-ra to a shortlived comic run that should have served as a revival for the series but never quite took off. Besides the comics themselves it also contains a wealth of background info on the series, which includes interviews with some of the writers and pencilers that created these works of art. And I do mean art. As you might have noticed from a couple of the shots I have included in this post, there was some major talent involved when you like at the drawings alone. I love the oldschool style of some of these comics, and for anyone who grew up with comics in the 80’s it’s hard to not smile at the nostalgic feel of it all. At the start of this run, you could hardly speak of comics as they were more stories that were accompanied by pictures. Later the series evolved and became more traditional looking comics.
The art is good, but how are the stories themselves? Well, they range from totally awesome to downright sucky, if you will pardon my French. But overall though most of the comics are pretty cool. It’s classic good vs evil type of storytelling where He-man fights against his nemesis the evil lord Skeletor and his henchmen. A fun fact to know is that one of the comics was written by Robert Kirkman. If that name doesn’t ring a bell he is the creator of a little known comicbook/tv series called The Walking Dead. This being a kid show, are these comics any fun to read when you are an adult? Well, quite frankly yes. He-man always has been a series that targeted an audience of 12 years and older (and ofcourse younger children still watched it anyway because it was cool to do so), and as such some of the stories and comics depict some pretty gruesome creatures and situations. In fact one of the covers of these comics caused quite a big disturbance at the time of it’s release because it was very brutal and had parents all over the world in uproar.
This book is absolutely amazing. If you have a warm heart towards 80’s cartoons, or a love for oldschool type comics, this is a collection that you just have to pick up. It isn’t even a very expensive book, and for the amount of stuff it contains it is well worth the price. It gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of these mini-comics and the amount of work that went into creating these. Even if you have never heard of He-man it’s worth checking it out, especially if you like fantasy type storytelling combined with some of the best art possible. Even though not all of the comics are of the same quality, you will get enough of a kick out of these to make you enjoy it, and forget about some of the lesser comics. In other words go and relive your childhood if you grew up with these cartoons, and buy this book. I promise you, you will not regret it. By the power of Grayskull: I HAVE THE POWERRRRRR!!!!!!
I give He-man the Masters of the Universe mini comic collection a 9 out of 10 score.
I want this now, comics and He—Man! What a great combination. Loved the review and especially want to read what Robert Kirkman can do with his story.

Thank you 😊Haha…Well I think it’s pretty easy to get this one from Amazon..and as I said it hasn’t even got a really high price tag, which is an added bonus. It really is a great collection, and if you like He-man, you will love this one 😊

I used to love the He-man on television. I found Skeletor fascinating. I didnt know He-man had a sister. These comics seem fun.

It was the exact opposite for me. I watched the cartoon…but I really didn’t like it. And now..more than 30 years later I do. Yep…I guess I am weird in that way lol.
He did..She was called She-Ra, and she even had her own television series that ran for about 85 or so episodes 😊
They were definitely fun: that’s for sure…ahhh..I love the 80’s 😂😂

I love the 70s too… She-ra did not come to my country, hence I did not know. I loved the cartoon. Wouldn’t mind watching them again. But I wm check out the comics

I remember reading a few He-man comics when I visited my grandmother’s house. It brings back some nice memories, I really liked the good vs evil element and the colours of the characters!
A great classic! 😀

It really is a classic, and it’s so strange to me, that in my days as a kid I really didn’t enjoy it that much. Sure I watched the cartoon…but I liked others better. And now…I do enjoy seeing it. Sometimes the universe works in mysterious ways lol
But yes…I have plenty of memories from those days as well. Always nice to think back on them 😊😊

Oh I am going to be mean for a moment (don’t hate me!)
The toys came first with comics and then the cartoons were brought to life 🙃
I don’t know if you have seen the documentary; The Toys that made us. On Netflix, but they have a He-man episode. It is brilliant, I laughed so much!

Haha..please, why on Earth would I hate you? And if this wasn’t mean at all. I haven’t seen the He-man episode yet, but I plan to at some point (along with the new Transfromers episode as well).
So…no worries, I have even update the beginning of the post: just for you😊😊 Thanks!😀

Hi: just letting you know I just commented on your Fruits Basket post, but it got sent to the spamfilter…which is happening a lot again today (and it’s seriously annoying). So in other words, check the spamfilter of your blog, and you will find my comment there 😊 The only way to let people know about this is placing a comment on my own blog..so that’s why I am letting you know in this way 😀

Damn, why is that still happening to you? Should have been fixed by now, have you contacted wordpress about it?

Today it only seems to hit a few blogs, as there are also blogs where this did not happen…And I’m not the only one either as I rescued two comments from other people out of my own spamfilter too. It’s seriously annoying though. I have tried that, but every time I do it’s fixed before they respond. Ughhhh….

Well, who knows maybe someone will. There seems to be a resurgence in the re-release of old comics. The old Robotech line from comico for instance has also been reissued in a great new format. So …maybe these series will eventually be too. Fingers crossed 😊

I remember the cartoons, but I haven’t checked out the comics. And I had no idea that Robert Kirkman wrote one. This is a great review Michel. If I stumble across one, I’ll definitely pick it up.☺️

It’s funny how, as we grow older, we sometimes can appreciate something more than when we were a child. I have totally rediscovered He-man, and am enjoying the cartoons so much more now. This book really captured the spirit well, and combined with the art and that great nostalgic feeling I had a blast with it. As for Robert Kirkman…nope, I did not know that either, and he did a great job with it too 😊😊 Thanks so much Kim, always appreciate the kind words 😊😊

I love this series and always enjoyed getting one with each figure in the collection. I was always amazing on how different the comic was from the TV series itself. If you haven’t yet, I recommend the He-Man episode of the Netflix series The Toys that Made Us. It actually talks about the comic briefly!

OMG! Robert Kirkman. I love The Walking Dead Comic. That really is a fun fact 🙂
Saturday morning cartoons were awesome. We uses to watch the Irish TV channel RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) on a Saturday morning, when my siblings and I were growing up. Because it didn’t have the same funding as the British Channels, it would show all the old cartoons like He-man, the old Scooby-doo, Transformers and 60’s Batman. To be honest, this made it the best channel for cartoons. 🙂 Although, I wasn’t too fussed on He-man, he was one of my brothers’ favourite.
As for this comic. The art work looks pretty cool and brings back a lot of memories. If I got this comic, I think I’d have a hard time keeping my brothers from pinching it hehe 🙂
Thanks for sharing 🙂 This was a really nice post to read. I feel all nostalgic now 🙂

Yeah, and he really made a fun comic as well. It really is pretty interesting to see how people started in the industry at times.
That sounds great: that channel sounds about the same as the Sky Channel that I watched. Old Scooby and 60’s Batman was also shown there. Well..as I mentioned as a kid I really did not enjoy He-man either..and now I do…which is crazy 😊
Haha…well if you buy it, you should lock it in a vault so your brothers can’t get to it 😂😂
And thank you: I always like writing nostalgic posts, they bring back terrific memories 😊😊

Aww, YES! Fantastic Post, Michel!
Not a big fan of the cartoon, but was v keen to collect He-Man figures back in the day, especially as each one offered its own pocket-sized comic – still have them, too! That page, and the cover to Slave City, brought the memories flooding back.
My favourite was the comic that accompanied the Man-E-Faces figure – art by the great Mark Texeira!
Cheers!

Mark Texeira really drew some fantastic comics. Pretty much all of his art featured in this collection was amazing. Like you I also did not really enjoy the cartoon, but having recently acquired the full dvd set I have really grown to love it. And now I regret not buying the toys when i was a kid lol 😂😂
Thanks so much for the kind words, and this great comment 😀😀

I didn’t know that Mark Texeira did more for the Masters range – must check them out some time.
No regrets: if it is any consolation, ‘cos of their size, they were so much more expensive than other action figures – some cool characters available, but was unable to acquire them
No worries: plenty more great Comments to come 😉

Since it concerns He-man, this video relates. The guy that Lou mentions in this video…I pretty much know him. I think he paid like $50-60 to get this “famous interview”. This isn’t the full vid, the questions being asked were just cringe worthy, to the point where Lou bites his lower lip to stop himself from laughing.

Ah, someone who remembers Fun Factory. I had that life too. Though before Fun Factory it was ITV, the Wide Awake Club on Saturday Mornings that had Transformers and Mask. Then we got sky an it was Fun factory. Those were the days. I have to say I never really watched He Man on Fun Factory or the DJ Kat Show that succeeded it, didn’t realise it was on. I did watch the cartoon when it was on TV and I did read the comics before I started reading Transformers. This compendium thing looks awesome and I am about to check to see if it is still available somewhere south of £50. I rate this the most powerful blog post in the Universe and as such it needs a theme song… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nleygezvFGU

Ahhh…the DJ Kat show…also such a great show. I sometimes really long back for those you know that? I can really get nostalgic when I think back on those things, and now when I am watching the original Heman series again on dvd..all these great memories just come flooding back. Transformers though…that will always remain my favorite…no question about that.
Lol…and that last sentence of your comic: seriously funny! (Not to mention the great theme song that accompanied it).
As for finding the compendium: I just checked amazon uk: It’s in stock for £17.92, and brand spanking new as well. This book really isn’t expensive, and it’s crazy when you see what if offers you 😊😊

That’s a beautiful edition to have of something so nostalgic. Love how much of a throwback it is, and that it really highlights the evolution of the artwork too. And man, I do love the days when we were kids and just waking up as early is 6/7 in the morning to watch our favourite cartoons. As a 90s kid, I woke up that early too for Batman The Animated Series and so many other classic shows. I’m also a Transformers fan, and also grew up loving the Beast Wars. No idea if you know what I’m talking about. 😀 Great post nonetheless, Michel! 😀

Haha…Yes I totally know what you are talking about: I loved Beast Wars. It was a show that really tied into the lore of the original series in such a cool way. There was an episode where they actually met Optimus Prime which was totally awesome and gave me goosebumps. The Batman animated series is truly a work of art and so incredibly cool. Loved that one, especially the art style and storylines.
As for this book: I’m really happy with it. I had enormous fun reading it, and with my new found love for this animated classic, it was great for nostalgia
