Let me just start off this post by saying that I really suck at dropping shows. When I start with something, whether it’s anime or a regular tv show, I have a really hard time just not finishing it. No matter how bad it gets. I always have that nagging voice in my head whenever something is starting to turn ugly that keeps saying “ But what if it turns really good later on?”. It’s crazy isn’t it? I’m sure I’m not the only one that does this either. So why do we put ourselves through this kind of torture? (Aside from maybe having some very masochistic tendencies?) I have had plenty of times where I finished a show and found myself wondering why I wasted so many hours of my life on a piece of crap. And I honestly still don’t have a real answer either. If you have a cure in some way for this sickness let me know alright? Well, of course there is a reason for me bringing this up right now, as the anime I am about to review is one of those type of shows. Angels of Death was dropped by a lot of people after the first few episodes. I stuck with it though and I was not alone as a few others did as well, most notably the wonderful Irina.
Irina wrote some terrific weekly posts on it (but then again everything she writes is terrific so if you are not yet following her yet, a fact I doubt very much, please do so now), and we had fun in exchanging thoughts on a weekly basis. Moreover we also were pretty much on the same page for most of the time. Now, I am writing this post on saturday, and her post for the final episode will come out tomorrow. As such I have yet to discover what her thoughts on the show’s finale will be. But I digress. Is Angels of Death really such a bad anime? Let’s first talk about what this show is about, before I will be answering that one question. In Angels of Death a young girl called Rachel wakes up in an unfamiliar building having no memories of who she really is. While exploring the building she runs into the scythe wielding psychopath known as Zack. He is covered from head to toe in bandages and he immediately tries to kill her. Eventually though a really strange bond begins to form between the two of them. And it becomes even stranger because of a promise that is made between the killer and the girl. But the building holds many secrets, and many strange and terrifying occupants. Will the two of them be able to escape this nightmare…..
The first episode of Angels of Death was good. I would not say great, but it really set up an anime that had some great potential. A creepy atmosphere, a few fun and over the top characters, and some nice tension. Though there were a few cringeworthy bits like some cheesy voice-acting overall it promised us an entertaining B-type horror anime. Now understand that I sometimes love watching “So bad it’s good horror movies/animes”. I enjoyed King’s Game for instance, and well most of you know how awful that one sometimes was. Angels of Death though, sadly did not fall into that category. After the first episode, the second one turned the show into something totally different. It went into a real weird comedy act, that just felt completely out of place, especially when compared to the way the show started. But it did not stay that way (luckily: else I really might have dropped it), but it also didn’t become much better. There were some episodes that showed a hint of what might have been. At the halfway point I genuinely thought that the show was about to redeem itself. There were even some real attempts at character development (gasp) and the story became more interesting too.
Now that we are talking about the characters let’s just take a little sidestep and explore the two leads. First up it’s Rachel. Young girl, blonde, doesn’t smile a lot and talks in a really monotone voice. (If you are beginning to feel like my writing is turning a bit into the sarcastic territory, you would be right). She was just a very uninteresting lead, and over the course of the show I just could not find any symphathy for her, like at all. Even when we got to learn a little bit more about her background and what exactly made her tick, I found that I could not care less about her. Strangely enough it was Zack that eventually kept me returning each week to watch this. At first I really thought he was quite the annoying guy, with a grating voice that would give Asta from Black Clover a run for his money. (Yeah, you are right…no one can beat Asta in the annoying voice department). But he grew on me, and eventually I really liked him, a lot. There was just something cool about him. He provided the best moments in the show in my opinion, and without him this anime would really have been a total loss.
Which is not to say that it wasn’t. Angels of Death is based on a videogame, and at times it felt like we were watching that. Progress from Room A to Room B, find a key, move on…repeat. While this is sounding a bit harsh, and the show certainly did have some good episodes later on, overall it’s an anime that was just too uneven to recommend it to you. I kept hoping for a final episode that might have, in some way, at least redeemed the show but even that was simply not to be. The ending was as lackluster as most of this anime was, and after spending 16 weeks with this, I’m honestly feeling a bit relieved that it’s over now. There are two things that I will miss: Zack, and Irina’s posts for this one. Other than that though, this is an anime that will slowly fade from my memory and I won’t regret that in any way. So have I now learned my lesson and will I start dropping shows like flies? Erm…probably not. I’m even considering returning to Black Clover. Okay…maybe not…
I give Angels of Death a 5 out of 10 score.
Ugh, I’m the exact same way!! So if you do find a cure for it, do share with the rest of us because I’m hopeless xD
And what is it with friendly looking guys with glasses turning out to be complete psychopaths? It’s like we can’t trust anyone these days… Not even the geeky, harmless-looking types!
This anime seems to have gone through a real rollercoaster of genres and gotten all over the place… I’m wondering what the creators were thinking, or if they just didn’t know what to do with it.
I’m so sorry this fell short for you. Anime that feel like boring and mechanical videogames is just a big no-no. Again, what were the creators doing?? Recycling the game’s material to almost a T so they wouldn’t have too much work?
I honestly hope your next review is a bit chipper because I don’t want you doing anything else but enjoying yourself and watching great anime/movies/tv shows 🙂 Nevertheless, I very much loved reading this post of yours!
Keep up the wonderful work ^^

Lol….see? I knew I would not be the only one that does this😂😂 Yeah…I seem to keep falling for the same trap every time. It’s just too hard to quit something…because I usually always want to find out how something ends 😊
This one really had some great potential and could have grown into something really cool with a better script. Sadly it fell into a very mediocre territory, and despite a few good episodes, this one was pretty much quite the disappointment. It’s okay though….no matter what we watch, there is always going to be something that falls short. And sometimes it’s fun to write about shows that aren’t as good as well😂
But…we’ll see what the next one is going to be bringing. Thanks as always for another great comment: always love reading them! 😊

I’ve watched perhaps half the episodes, and everything after the graveyard arc has felt lacking to me, and even that felt a little lacking. It’s become a chore and there have been times where I said “I’m not going to watch it tonight cause I really need something better/more fun.” And now, having read your remarks, I feel even more confident about dropping it, cause I just don’t see it redeeming itself.
Thank you for your insights.

Yeah it’s just not a very good show I’m sorry to say😢
It had a lot of potential, especially when it just began, but overall it just went all over the place, and besides Zack being a fun character, the show was really too lackluster to give this one positive review.
Don’t think you will be missing out on much when you give this one a drop. Thank you for your comment 😊

I too find it hard to drop shows. I’ve sat through some clunkers all the way to the end.
This is one of the few I did manage to drop. I made it two episodes in and walked away. There just didn’t seem to be any real purpose. She wanted to die, he wanted to kill her…
Sometimes I come back and pick up where I left off, but everything I’ve read is making that less and less likely. Thanks for taking one for the team! 😁

Haha…well…I have been thinking about which shows I actually did drop, and that was Black Clover. After having seen 14 episodes or so, I decided that enough was enough. (And Asta’s voice played a big part in that decision😊).
But yes, there is no real point in coming back to this one I think. It is honestly a shame, as with a better script, this really could have ended up as being a really good show. But they wasted it’s potential. All that’s left for it, was a pretty fun character in the form of Zack…but yeah not much more than that.
Haha: and you are welcome! 😊😊

I’m really glad I let myself drop this one. I was hoping to go back to it, but all things considered I think I’ll be better off just avoiding.
That is one thing blogging and covering so many shows has made easier for me. I can now drop an anime and usually I have so much else on my plate I don’t give in to that nagging feeling that maybe I should get back to it.
I really did like the first episode of Angels of Death and felt it had a lot of potential, and then episode 2 happened. I can’t remember if I dropped at episode 3 or 4 but I know I was done with it at that point. The tone had changed so much, I wasn’t into the characters at all, and the very game like feel to dialogue and progress was just too obvious.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the series.

Yeah, I can definitely understand that. Honestly there were certain points in the show, especially during it’s middle half, where I felt that we might actually be going some where. The story turned into something more coherent, we were actually getting some character development even, but yeah..in the end it just dropped the ball. Real shame because I felt this could really have been a fun series if it had been handled better. What we are left with is just a very forgettable show and definitely the worst anime that I have seen this year.
As for dropping shows…well I don’t think I will be getting any better at it 😅 And that’s coming from me who has a backlog that is so huge I really SHOULD be dropping mediocre shows lol. But yeah all in all you didn’t miss much with this one I’m afraid 😢

I drop animes just like that.. * clicks fingers* … but I can rewatch those that I like a million times, no biggie. ( like Engaged to the Unidentified ) . Okay so I’m exaggerating, but I think I’ve watched at least 5 animes more than a dozen times. And my mother ‘s like ” what, you’re watching that again ? ” Yeah, mom, is there a problem ? Ha ha ha

This show was so crazy and freaky. I did like it because of all the psycho characters, but towards the end it got to weird for me with Rachel needing a God. It was like ughh ok weird. But I did find it entertaining. Wish they would have explained more about the other characters’ backgrounds

Haha, well I am glad that at least someone liked this show. For me despite the character of Zack and some occasional good episodes it just didn’t.
But well, as I said glad you did enjoy it! 😊

Now I’m really curious as to how this Zack and Asta sound to be considered annoying. To YouTube I go!
While this one was just okay for you, hopefully the next show you pick up is better.

Haha…I think there is even a video on Youtube that has Asta’s greatest shouting moments I think 😂😂 Zack luckily wasn’t as bad. He only started out like that 😂
Well, have to say that the shows that I am currently watching for seasonal anime have all been very good. And there is another one that I am watching that is seriously cool as well right now, so plenty more goodness to come luckily 😊

5 out of 10… Phew, I am glad I dropped it. That’s such a low score! It is pretty easy for me to drop shows because I think about all the other things I need to watch. There’s just no time to be wasted! I see that you might return to Black Clover… Hahaha…

haha, yeah I think you did well in dropping this one. There were occasionally a couple of fun things in the show, but overall this was just a total waste of time. I wish I could drop show so easily, it would save me so much time. Well..back to Black Clover…erm…not 😂😂

I still kind of want to watch for myself to see what happens… There’s a difference between reading a blog post and seeing it for myself, because I’ve always been curious about the ending for Angels of Death. Hm… if I ever do finish it, I will let you know LOL. But probably not!!

Haha..well it’s with pretty much everything we watch, it will always come down to personal opinion.Earlier this morning I saw someone give Angels of Death a 8.5 out of 10 score, so there are people that do like it. Well, definitely would be interested in hearing your thoughts on it if you do finish it ! 😊😊

Of the final episodes three were ok. The last one was awful. I mean, it was largely silence and panning shots, a monologue, and kind of lazy. Total waste of time and nor sure what I was meant to take away from this even.

Yeah true, I wondered about it myself as well. It was an ending that just didn’t even remotely give the show anything redeeming. There were some things in this show that weren’t a waste. But it’s definitely an anime that overall I could have lived without. A shame and in my opinion also definitely wasted potential as they could have made this series much better. Sad but true 😢

I know the kind of problem you have, not being able to stop watching something in hopes it gets better later. Sigh. I suffer from the same thing. Let me know if you find a cure though. Sometimes I am glad I had that persistence, because some shows turn out to be gems as I spend time on it. I guess it has it’s pros and cons. Despite the fact you had a tough time watching it, your review is really good and unbiased! Great job Michel!

Well honestly I did have a few times where a show improved after the first few episodes were a lit bit lacking so it’s not impossible. But this was certainly a good example of a show that I should have dropped sooner 😊Thanks for all the kind words and lovely comments. I appreciate them every time! 😊

Thanks for your kind words, glad you liked the review. Sometimes it’s also nice to review something that just wasn’t as good, and this one certainly fit that bill. Luckily some anime series that I’m currently watching ARE very good. So positive reviews will be coming up again later this year 😊😊

I’m kind of the same, having stayed with shows I really wasn’t enjoying to the end but I get that “what if i miss something?” syndrome if I do consider dropping it…
I’m learning to be a little more ruthless in dropping shows now as my time is becoming more limited so I have a four episode limit , which is when I dropped this show, and i have to say i have no compunction in doing so.
Kudos to you for sticking it out to the end – your medal is in the post! 😛

Haha, thanks I just found the medal and immediately put into my display case 😂😂 Seriously though…yeah you are so right. With all the time I don’t have, you would expect me to start dropping more things as well…at least faster…but…I’m still not doing it enough lol 😂
Maybe I should just be taking some lessons for this😊 True enough though, this one I should really have dropped much earlier…luckily it was only 23 minutes each week, so I didn’t miss much time overall (at least not when I don’t think about adding all the minutes together 😂😂).

These days I am ruthless when it comes to dropping shows. Part of the reason is that I have little free time due to work, so I don’t want to waste it on stuff I don’t enjoy.
Back in the day I was more patient, as the anime I watched was DVDs I bought. It felt like a waste of money not to see a series to its fruition. Sometimes I would be rewarded, as shows that started slow would improve later on.
Not sure what to make of this series. Some bloggers I follow have liked it, but your review makes me want to give it a miss.

Yeah…I hear ya. It’s something that I wish sometimes I could do too. Lately I have always been having problems on finding enough time, but despite that fact I still find it very hard to drop shows…silly me lol 😂
I have had a few occasions where shows definitely improved: one of them was Coppelion. It started off rather lackluster, but soon improved quite a lot.
This series really is a hate or love it type of deal. There really is very little middle ground. It’s definitely for me been the worst show of this entire year. But well…that’s my personal opinion of course. I would say watch the first two episodes. The first one is good, but the second one is where for me things started to go downhill. If you like episode 2, chances are you will like the rest of this anime 😊
LikeLiked by 2 people
My review of Coppelion mirrors your opinion. The first few episodes were meh. It got better when they stopped telling emotional stories and just went full out action.
Another series that improved a lot was Shang-rila. The first collection is slow paced. Once it establishes the characters however it won me over.

If you ever find that cure please pass it on to me! I HATE dropping shows with a passion. I have the same feelings of what if it’s just about to get better to simply wanting to see what happens to just plain being a completionist. I hate leaving anything unfinished. I have definitely gotten a better at dropping in recent years, but I still don’t do it enough and waste plenty of hours on not so great shows. I think people like us are in the minority, but there are still plenty like us around. So at least there’s that, lol 🙂

haha….that pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter as well. I definitely am a completionist. It even goes so far as for instance complete book series or moviefranchises. Sometimes I just want to have them all, even if some of them aren’t very good 😅😅
But yeah dropping shows is just something I should be doing more, but hardly ever have do I have the stomache for it. But lol, yeah it’s good to know that there are more people like us around 😂😂

Hahaha… I do the exact same thing 🤣 I’m currently putting myself through the second season of Tokyo Ghoul just in case it gets good, even though I really didn’t enjoy the 1st season 😂😂 It’s like a form of anime self-punishment 🙂
I was considering watching Angels of Death, but thankfully didn’t 🙂 The show sounds like it had potential, it’s a pity it didn’t live up to it. Hope the next series you watch is more enjoyable 😀

Really?? Not liking Tokyo Ghoul…well, you don’t hear that very often. I do admit that it certainly isn’t a series for everyone. It’s quite gory and certainly has some really horrible violence in it. But…I have to say that I did quite enjoy it, even the second season that many people didn’t like. But yeah…this does sound like a form of anime self-punishment lol 😂😂
Yeah, this one really wasn’t good…I went through it and luckily still had fun exchanging comments on this one, but other than that this really was quite the waste of time. Real pity as it certainly really had some potential. Luckile already watching quite a number of very good shows at the moment 😊😊

Yeah there seems to be a lot of people that love Tokyo Ghoul 🙂 I’ve read a few of the manga and they’re quite good. I’m just not too fond of the character Kaneki in the anime, which makes it hard to enjoy the show 😀
That’s good to hear 🙂 At least you got some fun out of the experience and have found a few great shows to make up for watching this one 😀

Yeah I did hear that most people like the manga above the anime. I can’t judge as I haven’t read the manga, but guess I should add to my to read list 😊😊
And yes the seasonal anime shows so far have been very good. I’m following about 5 of them, and all, with no exceptions have their own pros and cons 😊😊

Well…don’t say that I didn’t warn you lol…erm…well technically I didn’t…but erm..well…I warned you lol 😂😂
Yes…I dropped BC…sorry…I’m a horrible human being, I know…but erm..that show is now over 50 episodes long…so, honestly I am glad that I did. (Even though Asta is screaming in my ear to get back to watching it😂😂).

Octo is saying people shouldn’t watch it, that’s good enough for me to watch it. *teasing* 🦑🐙🐧
I think I got to episode 20 of BC before I put it on hold. I swear I am only holding it. I have a hard time dropping things so there is a lot of shows on hold on my MAL atm. How long can you keep something on hold before you can consider them dropped? And just tell Asta to shut up or else I’ll call his dad to come and spank him. 😎 (and then he can come and spank me like a grown up. 😳😎😘)

Haha…I don’t think there is set amount of time for a show to be considered having been dropped…🤔🤔 At least…not that I know of lol 😂😂
Well…maybe I will get back to BC at some point too…it’s still frustrating to see a show in my queue that hasn’t been finished. But definitely won’t be anytime soon😊
Hahaha…😂😂😂 Okay…I just told Asta to shut up…but he doesn’t listen, so I’m guessing you should sent his dad over to him….unless he has better things to do….😳😳 😂😂😂

At least now you can gladly check it off your watch list! 😀 I love being done with things that were starting to become pretty bad. I have a hard time quitting on them and really just want to complete it, at least the season I’m on. Over time I did start giving up on those that really showed no promise though. There’s really just too many shows/anime/books to stick around the bad stuff. But then… If I plan on reviewing say show/anime/book I’ll probably never quite though hahah Awesome review nonetheless, Michel. I think I’d safely pass on this, especially with all the cringey-stuff. I don’t want to risk living through those hahah 😀

Oh yeah I’m totally rubbish at giving up on shows too- I also assume that it’s gonna get better/I just need to know what happens anyway. But I’m getting better at it more recently (more cos I can’t stick with things as well as I used to- but that’s a different problem entirely 😉 ) It’s such a shame that the second episode didn’t work well and the rest of the series failed to live upto the first episode. Good that Zach was so compelling though (isn’t that the way that with shows like this there’s always one character to keep you hooked?!) It’s just a pity this was so uneven. I hope your next anime is better!
Great review as always!! 🙂

Haha…well I recognise that problem as well. It’s sometimes hard to stick with things, especially when things are really busy. I just picked up season 6 of Game of Thrones for instance, and just got back to it today…after not having watched it for about 2 or so months. Weird how that happens sometimes.
But other than that, yeah I still haven’t really learned how to drop shows lol 😂😂
This anime really wasn’t worth the effort though. Yeah it had one fun character, but the story was really lackluster, and it was just a show that kind of went all over the place. Currently watching a lot of seasonal anime, and there are a couple of really cool shows that I have seen so far. So yeah…good anime will be heading this way again 😊😊 Thank for your kind words and great comment 😊

Well, I can’t help you with your affliction, because I suffer from the same thing. Especially if I’m going to review something. But, I just can’t seem to put something down no matter how bad it is!! IT MIGHT GET BETTER!! What if I warn people against it and it would have turned out being my favourite thing?!? But… This one…. Defintitely doesn’t sound like something I’d want to watch. When you first described the plot I thought “huh, this must have been the one that wasn’t very good… But, the plot actually sounds kind of interesting!” funny enough, the first thing you lost me at was the annoying voice acting. If there’s one thing that WILL make me give up on a show? It’s a grating voice. But, the kind of monotonous vg aspects also didn’t sound very entertaining. Sorry this one fell short. But, thanks for the awesome review letting me know! 💖💖🍻

Lol…a lot of people seem to suffer from that affliction. We really have to find a cure soon, as it’s beginning to sound like an epidimic. But…what if there is no cure😱😱
The reasons you point out though…those are exactly the reason why I can never stop watching/reading something. Exactly: what if things get better…and I missed out on it lol😂😂 It’s so annoying though…because we already have way too little time on our hands…it would be so much easier if we were able to drop things …bad things that is 😂😂
So true: this anime really sucked for lack of a better word. The only thing that was good about it was the fun character of Zack…but other than that…it was just a very bad series: you had best avoid this on alright! Thanks for you awesome comment ❤️❤️😊

I think I can drop shows I watch weekly better than ones that I’m binge watching. It is easier to keep scrolling by a week later. So I didn’t finish this show. Being all about character the leads really were not that interesting. I thought for a moment that Zack would be but nope.
I wish it would have been creepier.

Well…funny enough, Zack did get interesting, it just took a while. But without Zack, I probably would have dropped this one ages ago 😂😂 (well…at least I think I would have 😂😂).
But I think that’s a valid point. Shows that you are bingewatching you can finish much faster so that’s probably true 😊😊
Still…for me I think I will never quite master the art of dropping shows 😂😂
