With the summer season now in full swing, and temperatures reaching at times very uncomfortable heights (seriously living on the 12th floor of an apartment building does have it’s downsides), Hollywood bring us the usual popcorn summer movies. I love movies, a fact that many of you know very well. I can watch classics, b-movies, action movies, dramas and many others with equal enthusiasm. Lately though it seems that people in general (and mind you this is not meant as criticism) just have forgotten how to have fun at the movies. These days I read a lot of reviews saying that certain films are not original any more, full of cliches, not have a decent storyline and of these kind of remarks. And while of course there is definitely truth in some of those statements, I wonder if that is necessarily a bad thing all the time. Ask yourself the question why we watch movies in the first place? If you answered: “To be entertained”, you answered correctly. So why then if a movie does entertain, but doesn’t really bring anything new to the table, are critics so fast to slam it into the ground? A perfect example of this is the new Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) movie Skyscraper.
The Rock plays former FBI hostage team leader Will Sawyer who lost his leg after a horrible incident. He has managed to pick up the pieces of his life though, and now has a lovely wife and two adorable children and a new job as a security inspector for skyscrapers. One day one of his former FBI team mates introduces him to a wealthy Asian financer, who has just overseen the construction of the tallest building in the world. Called “ The Pearl” and build in Hong Kong it’s a remarkable feat of engineering, and Will gets offered the job to overlook it’s security. After Will leaves the building, later that day a group of terrorists, under the command of a man named Botha, enter it and start an enormous blaze on one of the middle floors. Sawyer’s family who at that time is also present in the Pearl become trapped with the fire creeping ever closer. Will has to find away to enter the burning skycraper and rescue his wife and kids before it’s too late. Things become even more difficult when the police think that he might also be a part of the villains. But Sawyer is determined, and not about to be slowed down…by anyone….
So if this story sounds somewhat familiar to you, you would be right. Of course one can’t help but think of Die Hard or the brilliant Towering Inferno when watching this. But let’s first start with the good stuff here. This movie once again proves why The Rock is currently the highest paid actor in the business. His natural charisma, acting abilities and physical prowess just seem to win you over in pretty much every role he plays. This one is no exception to that rule. Wil Sawyer is just the kind of hero type that you can’t help but root for. He has a disability in the form of his prosthetic leg, but manages to overcome this and emerge as someone who rises above himself. It was also a pleasant surprise to see Neve “Scream” Campbell again on the bigscreen who played his wife Sarah. She was once one of the most promising young actresses of Hollywood, but sadly her career never took off. Which is a true shame as she really is a terrific actress and in this film that once again became apparent. The on screen chemistry between The Rock and her also worked quite well which is important in a film such as this.
But of course you go to a movie like this to see action, and in that regard the movie serves you well. As expected you will get a couple of great scenes where Will must overcome dizzying heights in order to get his family to safety. And of course this being a Die Hard type of film there are also plenty of fight scenes, gun battles in short all of the good stuff. The film hardly ever has a point where you get to relax, and thunders along like a rollercoaster, never leaving you bored for a single second. After all the postives there are of course also a few negatives. One of these was the ending of the film. It felt a bit anticlimactic to be honest, especially after the build up that came before it. While it luckily did not ruin the film for me, it was slightly disappointing. The film’s main villain Botha, played by actor Roland Møller, was not particularly menacing and pretty much a stereo type kind of evil guy. And then of course it is inevitable to not mention that the movie lacks in orginality and is pretty much a by the book summer blockbuster.
But again I ask the question: “ Is this really such a bad thing? “. In the case of this film I can only answer with no. During the entire playtime of this movie I was entertained, except for the conclusion of the film which could have been better. It’s becoming common practice to automatically give a movie a bad grade just because it doesn’t do anything new. And that to me at least isn’t fair. I don’t always need a film that brings me an original script, or Oscar worthy performances. Sometimes I just like to go to the movies and watch a film where I can turn off my mind for 2 hours or so and just enjoy it for what it is: a nice, well made and solidly entertaining action romp. Skycraper is just that: nothing more, nothing less. Chances are that if you like these type of films, you are going to pretty much enjoy this one. This film is just simply solid as a rock, pun of course totally intended.
I give Skyscraper a 8 out of 10 score.
8/10 is about what I edited this movie to be. I think it’ll likely be a DVD one for me due to the price of the cinema around here, but it’s one I think I’ll enjoy.

It was simply a very fun movie, and just one of those films that does what it’s supposed to do 😊 I definitely think you will enjoy it 😀

I do think we need films like that. I’m all for originality and fresh takes on stuff, but sometimes, you just want to sit back and smile at something that does what you expect it to.

Exactly, could not agree with you more. It’s pretty much what I said when I left the theatre today as well: people just at times seem to be way too critical. I just love these type of films, especially one that just gets it right such as this one. Sure…it offers nothing particularly new, but I really did enjoy this…and wasn’t bored for one second which for me is one of the most important things in a movie 😊

I’m with you on this, I love a good old romp with baddies and goodies and lots of action. Move over Bruce, Arnie & Sly, The Rock is the new master. 🙂

Haha…totally agree (although I do have to say that I still love my old 80’s action movies, some of those never get old 😂😂) Well, I definitelu think that you will love this one then 😀

I really want to see this movie for EXACTLY the reason you said?? Is it going to be winning any Oscar’s?? Hells no!…. Do I care?? HELLS NO!! It pretty much sounded like Die Hard B movie styleez!! I could never say no to that!! (I could never say no to Dwayne Johnson, either. That man is just too good at not taking himself too seriously. I feel like he can pretty much do anything! Lol!)
I didn’t know. Neve Campbell was in it! THAT’S a blast from the past! Good to know she’s not dead!

True enough: that’s exactly what I meant: Why does every movie these days have to be something that is completely changing the way we watch movies? I can just really enjoy something like this just as much.
It was really awesome to see Neve again, and quite honestly she looks almost exactly the same as she did in Scream. She has aged very well 😊
As for the Rock: he is just awesome, and can pretty much take on every role he plays. As for the so called real moviecritics, do we care what they think?! HELLS NO 😂😂😂

This was just one of those movies where you almost continually have a kind of stupid grin on your face as it really is quite entertaining. No, it wasn’t perfect, but it was certainly entertaining and I really enjoyed myself with it this afternoon in the theatre 😊
I hope you will be able to watch it soon, and of course I look forward to hearing you thoughts on it 😊

Yeah it was a fun one. Of course it has it’s flaws as I said in the review but the movie more than makes things up with the action and the Rock and Neve giving great performances. It really was nice to see Neve again 😊

I’m not a huge fan of The Rock and have always found his stuff cheesy and not funny, but I’m not going to lie that he does have nice moments here and there. He’s sort of the reason why the Fast and Furious turned into what it is today too… I’m however praying that his superhero role as Black Adam in the near future will satisfy my hopes for a good performance though! 😮 As for Skyscraper, I honestly didn’t think it would be much of a hit, but you sure do make a nice case of enjoying it just for fun. I’d definitely give it a shot when I’m craving for one of those popcorn flick movies that needs me to turn off my brain for a couple of hours! 😛 Great review, Michel. 😀

Sure enough I also don’t like every movie the Rock is in, but he did give us some really cool ones, and The Fast and the Furious franchise really is a great example of that. It will be interesting to see what the spin off is going to be like with him and Jason Statham. I’m not familiar with the Black Adam character, but I hope for you it’s going to be a good movie.
Yeah..overall as I said it’s a fun film and for people to dismiss it as just another Die Hard clone is just a bit too harsh. But overall I really enjoyed it: perfect to turn off you brain once in a while lol. Thanks so much for the kind words and the awesome comment 😊

Haha. “But it doesn’t add anything new!” and “Hollywood is running out of ideas!” have become repetitive criticisms. Great review – I’ll look for this when I want an entertaining actioner.

They really have become repetitive and sure there is some truth in it, but to simply dismiss every movie because of that is just not fair. Thanks so much, and I hope you will enjoy the film when you get around to it 😊

This is a movie I’m really looking forward to because of it’s disaster type elements. And I do enjoy The Rock. It looks like a fun, classic style action movie. No need to do anything different. I encounter that criticism a lot with kdramas and people feeling they are too cliché and don’t like the formula. But those things are part of why I and many fell in love with dramas. Sure, I appreciate new and different from time to time, but mostly I just want to be entertained. I just try and appreciate the good in most shows. Sometimes the clichés can be too much, but most of the time, I just enjoy them for what they are. Glad to see you appreciate that type of thing too 🙂

I really is something that is becoming slightly annoying. Sure: I also like it when something tries to create a truly original experience. But there are also times when I just like to enjoy myself and watch something simple, but that still entertains. This is one of those movies. I really enjoyed it for what it was: a solid and fun summer blockbuster movie 😊😊

To be honest, I agree with you on this. I don’t really mind the odd cliches or deficiency of originality in movies. They can still be very entertaining when done well. 😀
If a movie concept works, why mess with it. I guess you could say good movie concepts Die Hard. 😀
(Glob, I want put myself in the pun cupboard for that last pun) 🙂

Hahaha….that pun was great 😂😂😂😂
But you are so right. One really wonders at times why a movie always needs to be original. Sure it’s nice when it manages to achieve that, but come on…does it always need this to entertain? I think not. And this is a perfect example of that. Just a really fun and highly enjoyable rollercoaster ride. It was great 😊😊 Thanks for your great (and funny) comment 😀😀

You got one thing right there Michel. People have somehow forgotten that movies and all these platforms are for our entertainment . Of course there are various exceptions to this, but on that note this sounds like a good film. You have all these high concept high end films and musuc and books that require to actually think a lot and study. Which are great! But sometimes you need to just lie back down on a couch with some unhealthy snacks and drinks and just casually laze off while watching something that just entertains! As usual, a great post!

Thank you so much for such a great comment. It really is like that these day isn’t it? A lof of people just are way too serious and when a movie only offers entertainment and little else it’s way too easily dismissed as not being good which is totally unfair. This is exactly one of those films that you described: one to lie back to and eat some unhealthy snacks with 😊😊

Definitely. I mean why be serious even when you watch a movie? Don’t we deal with enough seriousness in real life anyways?

The Rock is the highest paid actor in Hollywood? Impressive. Hulk Hogan must be kicking himself, because he never managed to crack that market. Heck, even Dave Bautista is doing well for himself with movies.

Yeah, he is, which is something that suprised the heck out of me as well. But absolutely it is impressive. Almost would make me quit my dayjob and enter a wrestling career myself lol 😂😂
But true, Hulk Hogan must have done something wrong back in the day (then again, he probably did not really choose the right films 😊).

I’ve heard that this film is no good. But reading your review, I think I will try to watch the film later.
I am so agree with everything you said about films these days. Sometimes, people do forget why they watched film in the first place. Perhaps criticsms comes easily than praise.
Though many films seem cliche, I think if we can enjoy the story than it’s alright. Not all cliche stories are a bad thing. If they knew how to tell it, cliche can be good. Besides, many people love cliche stories anyway. I like new and fresh ideas but I also enjoy cliche stories at times. Sometimes, cliche and simple stories are what you need.
Great review as always! And very much inspiring! 😊

A lot of people just made this film look bad just because it’s a bit of a familiar story and that in my opinion really wasn’t fair. I really had fun watching this. It might not have been the best film ever, but it was still a great watch. Most importantly it entertained throughout it’s entire runtime 😊
Thank you very much for your kind words and your wonderful comment 😀
