Those of you that have been following me for a while now, know that I am a huge fan of the 80’s. I don’t know what it is with that era, but it will always have a very special place in my heart. Probably a big reason that I love it so much is that I grew up during those times, and I have some very fond memories of it. While I could give a (very) lengthy list of all the things that are so cool about the 80’s, I’m going to select one of them for this post, as it’s pretty relevant for the review of this movie. In the 80’s some of the best action films of all time have been made. Yes, I know some people might disagree with me on that fact, but just look at this personal list of some of my favorite Action Movies of the 80’s and tell me I’m wrong. Undoubtedly two of 80’s biggest action stars where Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. However with that popularity also came a huge rivalry, and suffice it to say that both actors hated each other’s guts in those days. Every time they tried to outdo each other with bigger guns, bigger explosions, bigger knives…well..you get the idea. Luckily that rivalry is in the past as the two have now become very good friends and have even made some movies together. Too bad that didn’t happen during the golden days of action in the 80’s because just think about what they would have been able to create between the two of them.
In 2010 Sylvester Stallone gathered together a group of action heroes from times past and present to direct them in a movie that would become an action extravaganza that was made for the fans of those golden times. The Expendables tells the tale of a group of elite mercenaries that take on dangerous missions that nobody else even dares to think about. Or if you want a better description let’s say they are the A-team on steroids. Barney Ross is the team’s fearless leader and one day he gets contacted by a man that introduces himself as Mr. Church, because well, their first meeting is in a church. A small island called Vilena is currently in the clutches of a vile dictator named General Garza. Church wants him taken out. Before taking on the mission, Barney along with his best friend Lee Christmas, decides to do some recon. Arriving on the island they soon meet up with their contact, a beautiful girl that goes by the name of Sandra. There is more to her then meets the eye though, and there is also more to the mission itself as well, as Barney and Lee are about to find out. Former CIA-agent James Munroe is apparently the one that is really calling the shots on Vilena and he has some very nefarious plans in store. Even though their chances are slim to none, and a whole army awaits them, Barney plans to bring the team in for what might become a suicide mission. But hey, they don’t call themselves Expendables for nothing right?
When I first heard of this project back in the day I became more and more excited as the names that were being added to the cast of the movie became ever more impressive. Well, if you are a fan of action movies that is. Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and of course the man himself Sylvester Stallone are but a few of the actors that are starring in this film. This is an action film just like they made them in the 80’s. This movie simply ticks all the right boxes you want to see in these kind of movies. Huge explosions? You got em. Car chase scenes? You betcha! Gun fights and all sorts of martial arts sequences where testosterone filled men kick the crap out of each other? Of course! Cheesy oneliners? Hey, what do you think? For a fan of these type of action flicks, it’s simply put a lovefest that doesn’t let up for a second. It’s dumb, and completely over the top, but oh boy is this film a lot of fun. No matter what you think of it, I think nobody can deny the fact that one has to have enormous respect for Stallone. At the time of this film he was 64 years of age and he not only directed the movie but also runs and fights like he’s half that age. It’s a tour de force that is utterly amazing, and for the people that say he’s well to coin a phrase, expendable in this film, I say think again!
But it’s not only the action that makes this film so much fun. The cast itself is another huge part of the succes of this action vehicle. A small but very enjoyable scene between Schwarzenegger, Willis and Stallone have them making fun of each other, and it works really well. Sadly that would be the only screentime both The Terminator and John McClane would have in this film. Either way that doesn’t really matter as the rest of the cast more than make up for it. It’s definitely Stallone’s and Statham’s characters that carry this film, and their on screen chemistry is one of it’s highlights. Their comedic banter during gunfights is definitely funny, although admittedly some jokes do fall short. Mickey Rourke has a more thoughtful role in the film, and doesn’t take part in the numerous action scenes, but is more of father figure to the group. There’s a scene in the film where his character has a speech about how he ended up losing the last part of his soul that I thought was acted extremely well. Rourke is still a terrific actor, and it’s sad how his lifestyle has made him a former shadow of himself. That said, it’s great to see him in this fun role. Speaking of fun roles, Lundgren’s character Gunner Jensen is a total nutcase, and you can how much he’s enjoying himself. He’s totally out of control during most of the movie and serves up some of the movies best fight sequences.
On the villain’s side Eric Roberts plays the malicious James Munroe, a truly destestable man, that you both hate and love. Hate because he’s so evil. Love because he’s a true villain with charisma. It’s a credit to Eric Roberts who in my opinion has always been a very underrated actor. But let’s also not forget David Zayas who breathes life into the vile dictator General Garza. I loved his interaction with Eric’s character, as the two men have a power struggle during the course of the film, and have some truly great scenes together acting wise. The Expendables eventually got two sequels that had even more action heroes added to it’s already impressive cast, but that’s a story for another time. This won’t be a film that is loved by everyone, and I totally respect that. Some people might even call it a totally dumb film, and I get that as well. It doesn’t bother me one bit though, as I freaking love this movie. It’s a film that is a throwback to the action era of the 80’s and at the same time fills you with a sense of melancholy as you know that those times are not going to return. Stallone is and always shall be my favorite action hero, and he simply shows in this film that he knows the action genre inside and out. As his former rival says in another movie: He might be old, but not obsolete.
I give the Expendables a 9 out of 10 score.
I salute you for this my friend, I loved this movie, right up my street and now I’m going to have to watch it again! So much fun.

Aww, now that makes me happy! It really is such a fun filled film. Yes it’s dumb, but it’s my kind of dumb! I love it, from start to finish. I’ll probably at some point revisit the sequels too 😊😊 Have fun rewatching it!😀

I expected to hate this film of course. It contained everything I thought was just outright silly. But I eventually watched it on TV just to see how silly it was, and you will be pleased to know that I really enjoyed it! I am sure that’s because they really didn’t take any of it seriously, unlike the M.I. films.
Best wishes, Pete.

Haha, honestly I expected that as well, but I’m very happy to hear that you didn’t😊 I think you hit it right on the mark there Pete: they really aren’t taking things seriously, in fact, they are making fun of their own characters, which is why this film works on so many levels. It was really fun to rewatch this one, and I’m probably at one point going to get into the sequels too😊 As for M.I…..well…there might be a (Re-) visit post for that one coming up at some point😅😅😊😊

This really is a fun movie! I think some of Stalones delivieries are somewhat inaudible at times but other than that it is just fun and campy! Afterwards I need to watch some My Little Pony though to wash the testosterone taste out of my mouth xD

Haha😂😂 That last sentence really had me laughing. If Stallone read this one, I think he would approve!😂
You are so righ though, this really is fun and campy, which is why it works so well. I love the fact that they all don’t take it too seriously😊😊 It’s over the top, completely silly fun!😂

I was a huge fan of action movies in the 80s’ but I lost touch with them. I have however recently watched one of the Rambo remakes and enjoyed it. I guess I should give this film a try when I have chance. You have certainly reminded me of the enjoyment I once had with this genre. Wonderful read and I think Commando and Cobra are my favourites. I would First Blood but that is a film all on its own.

Thanks so much as always for the kind words! I’m hoping to dive back into the 80’s again soon with another retro Raist post, but so far I haven’t yet found something that I want to feature for that series, but I’ll think of something😊
As for this film, if you have warm heart for those films, you will love this. It’s pretty much a love letter to all those action movies, it doesn’t take it all too seriously and for fans it oozes nostalgia. I think you will really enjoy it!😀😀

Speaking of the 80’s I’m going to cover the V series one episode at a time. I watch that series every decade or so it’s time to jump back in. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for Retro post then.

Ooh! Nice! I’m definitely looking forward to that one! It’s one of my alltime favorite sci-fi series! I even enjoyed the remake, but was sad it got cancelled. The original series though: really. really good!

I think there may be a new movie in the pipeline but will have to see about that. It’s certainly a franchise with potential.

That would be interesting. There also a new Battlestar film in the works, so it seems like good times for us sci-fi fans 😊

I’m a big First Blood fan too. The Expendables was a bit of a greatest hits, and I think I preferred the sequel, but a good laugh to see so many great action stars together…

I’m with you! I think I also preferred the sequel myself, but as I had not yet reviewed this first part, I though I would start at the beginning😊
It really was great to see all of the old greats together, and in the second one seeing both good old Chuck Norris and Van Damme added to the mix too, made it even more fun!😀

I saw this movie a long time ago. It was okay, but Hollywood action movies aren’t my thing. It was a fun watch, but not something I’d watch over and over again. Of course, there’s that hilarious hindsight moment when you realize “Rocky” and “Ivan Drago” are in the same movie again and it’s not Creed. 🙂

Fair enough😊 As I mentioned, it’s not a film for everyone, but I’m a huge fan of these type of films. Sure their dumb and mindless, but at times it’s nice to watch these type of films, and switch off for a few hours or so😀
Haha…yeah true! Creed 2 I have yet to see though: I really enjoyed the first one quite a lot!😊

Sure thing and I totally get it. These movies can be fun to watch, but I have to not take everything so seriously. Of course, the reviewer in me wants to nitpick and analyze everything from the story, characterization, production, etc. I’m the kind of person who takes notes with what I watch ever since I started one of my blogs. Hahaha!
I haven’t seen either Creed movies, but I know what they’re about. I did heard good things about the first one at least.

Ya know, for some reason, I’ve never watched these movies. I honestly don’t know why. There’s no reason. I didn’t avoid them or anything. I just never sat down an watched them. Same goes for the entire MI series of films. Never seen a single one of them.
I think I need to fix this.

You have never seen these films???Wow, okay, we need to talk about this, soon! We have a lot to talk about anime, these movies…I feel a new collab post needs to be done, and soon😂😂
I have a feeling you will love these films, unless I’m really, really mistaking😊
Sidenote: did you see my twitter message directed at you?🤔😊😊

I do have fond memories of watching the action movies of many of these stars, cheesy though they may be. But somehow I never managed to catch this one, which makes no sense given the cast. Granted, some of the stars I’ve enjoyed more than others, but overall it’s a fun genre when done right. I just added this one to my queue. Thanks for the enthusiastic review!

Haha, I just said to Cain that I was surprised that he had not seen this one yet😊 I thought when this came out quite a few people have seen this😊 I stand corrected! It’s the same with me considering the case. Some I’ve been a fan of, others not so much😊Luckily though when it comes to these films, all of them are really playing excellent, and especially when it comes to nostalgia, this is definitely a film well worth checking out! I hope you will enjoy it when you get the chance. Thank you for the visit and the comment😊

Yeah, they are really fun films! It’s simple mindless fun, but at times it’s just really nice to simply switch off, and forget about things for an hour or two. And with a cast like this, that really works 😊

At some point I plan on watching this franchise, I enjoyed the RED duology, so I don’t see anything here that would turn me away.
Will you be reviewing any of the sequels?

Nope I don’t think so either: these are all fun films (although the third one is my least favorite). But these are definitely films that are highly enjoyable. Simply mindless fun, but sometimes we just need films like that in our life😊
As for your question: yes I am planning on that😊 Hope to review another one somewhere at the beginning of December 😊

Well this doesn’t happen often, but despite my immense love of 80’s action movies, I wasn’t a big fan of the first Expendables. Bringing together so many action stars was a seriously cool idea, but I felt like Sylvester Stallone wasn’t too sure how to go about it in the directors chair. The violence felt more gory than creative, the plot seemed a bit generic, and I just got an overall sense of self-seriousness. I did enjoy the brief Rambo, Terminator, John McClane meeting and overall machoness though. In contrast, I absolutely love Expendables 2 with a passion. In my opinion, that’s when they struck the right balance of dumb fun and fanservice. Then they lost me again with Expendables 3. But like you said, that’s a story for another time.

Fair enough😊 The plot definitely wasn’t one of the film’s stronger points (then again, the plot in these kind of films is never very strong I guess😅) but like you my favorite Expendables film is part 2. I am planning on writing a review for that one in December As for part 3…..well, let’s just say that’s not my favorite one either 😊
Either way this is just a fun franchise, and the case really makes it memorable. I wouldn’t mind seeing another one, as long as the plot is fun😊 Thanks for the visit, and the comment!😊

You’re welcome. Actually another thing I really liked about the first film was the seriously awesome song used in the trailer. You can hear it here in case you don’t recall: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw-6cGntqEY

I was very disappointed with this film, mostly as I wanted to see Jet Li who didn’t do much plus, as a wrestling fan, I was keen to see how Stone Cold Steve Austin would fare in the line-up of action film heavyweights, but like Li, he was just another guy on the screen.
To be honest, this is a tough genre to be fresh and creative with and not be totally OTT stupid with the action, and if star power is your only weapon then that is a half-concession gimmick to pleasing your audience if you don’t have a decent script in my view.
My dad has films 2 and 3 on DVD but I have no inclination to watch them, but more power to you if this is your bag. I’ll stick with The Raid films instead! 😉 😛

Haha, fair enough😊 For me this was just a very good old fashioned piece of nostalgia😊 I honestly liked part 2 way more than this one though, as I though there was much more structure there when it comes to story, and Van Damme just played a really cool bad guy😊
Oooh…the Raid…hmm, now that’s a film that’s maybe worth revisiting, haven’t seen that one in quite a while😊
Agree with you on Jet Li by the way. I really wished he did have a bigger part in this one. Can’t remember if that was the case in part 2. I will let you know once I’ve rewatched that one 😊

I haven’t seen this one, although having grown up in the 80s I’m sure I’d enjoy it. I’m now wondering why Steven Segal never got involved in any of the Expendables films? Maybe his ego is one of the few things still bigger than his waistline.

I definitely have the feeling that if you are a fan of the 80’s this is one you will really enjoy.
It’s a good question. I know Segal isn’t very loved in Hollywood, and I think that’s one of the reasons he probably never got invited for this series. Luckily Van Damme does join the party in part 2, and he did a great job at that as well 😊😊I hope to revisit part 2 somewhere in December 😊😊

Great review, couldn’t agree more! The Expendables might not have been a standout in the action genre in terms of plot. But seeing those guys come together? It’s awesome! I wonder, whatever happened to the all-female sequel?

As with so many things, it’s stuck in limbo, and I don’t think it will ever see the light of day in my honest opinion.
Same as with a part 4 that was planned for this one. Luckily we still have these to enjoy, so that’s good😊

Man, like you, I found this franchise so much fun and was so giddy when they first announced it too. The idea sounded crazy on paper but look at this beautiful monster we got in the end! So much action, so much chaos, so much awesomeness packed into it all! The last project I heard was in the making was an all-female Expendables movie, for which I’m a bit more skeptical, but hell, why not. Thanks for sharing another excellent review of this one! Looking forward to the trip down memory lane with the sequel’s review! 😀

Haha, so true! It’s a lot of fun to revisit this series, and I will in all likelyhood be doing the two sequels as well. The second one is honestly my favorite as Van Damme played a great villain in that one😊
The all female expendables is one that’s been stuck in limbo for quite a while now, and I’m doubting it will ever see the light of day. Stallon was rumored to be working on a 4th part of this, but that’s also probably not going to happen. Luckily we still have these to return to, so that’s good 😊 Thanks for the visit, and I promise to have more trips down memory lane soon 😊

Even though action is not a favorite genre of mine, I still enjoy it sometimes and totally agree that the 80’s were the best for the genre. Big Schwarzenegger fan here. I love Stallone too, but more for the Rocky series than the action movies. Haven’t seen this film since it doesn’t really look like my thing. Glad that you had so much fun with it though 🙂

Well…I think you might like it, as it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and a big reason why it’s so much fun. It’s honestly making fun of the entire action genre (and the actors make fun of themselves as well which is even better). Both Schwarzenegger and Stallone were my heroes back in the day….I’ve always been slightly more of a Stallone fan, but Schwarzenegger is awesome too😊
