There are some type of films that just keep being made no matter what age you live in. They might disappear for a while, but eventually they always make a comeback. Way back in 1932 a movie called The Mummy was released by Universal Pictures. It starred Boris Karloff as the man in rags, a legendary actor who had also previously played the iconic monster Frankenstein. Now most modern moviegoing audiences would call that film fairly dated when compared to current standards. Still there is no denying the movie has an incredible atmosphere and is a true classic. In 1999 a remake was made, which turned the subtle original into a special effects driven summer popcorn flick. A very enjoyable one though, which spawned two sequels that were also moderately succesful. Just like an Egyptian curse though, that wasn’t the end of it. In 2017 yet another new version was made, this time one that would also serve as a kick off for a whole slate of new monster films, that would all be tied together into a new Dark Universe franchise. Things turned out differently though, as the movie starring Tom Cruise bombed at the boxoffice and received a lot of negative reviews.
When it comes to reviews and movies I am one of those people that always likes to form my own opinion. I have sometimes seen films get crushed by the so called movie critics, that were highly enjoyable. So is this reboot of the Mummy as bad as most people say it is? Let’s first dive into the story of the film, before I get back to that. In ancient times the Egyptian Princess Ahmanet was set to become a pharaoh. But then her younger brother was born, and she saw the position she craved so much taken from her. Hellbent on revenge, she made a deal with Set the god of death and proceeded to kill her family. Her evil deeds were discovered however, and she was mummified alive for her crimes. Thousands of years later, her tomb is accidentally discovered by the soldier of fortune Nick Morton in Iraq. The sarcophagus of Ahmanet is brought out and taken for transport to London. This sets into motion a sequence of events that could spell doom for the entire world. The Egyptian princess seems to have cheated death, and after having been imprisoned for such a long time her thirst for revenge has only grown. Standing in her way are Nick, archeologist Jenny Halsey and a mysterious doctor that goes by the name of Jekkyl. But will these three be enough to stop the evil of the ancient mummy…..
I am usually a fan of Tom Cruise movies. As I have said in a previous post, the guy might sometimes not have all his marbles straight, but he can definitely act and make fun movies. In the Mummy though I felt that just he wasn’t a right fit for this type of role. His character Nick just wasn’t someone you could form an attachment too, and as he is also the one on who’s shoulders the faith of the world rests, you can imagine how this can become a problem. While there is no denying Tom’s efforts in again doing his own stuntwork, and bringing enthusiasm to the set, it just didn’t pay off here. In part this also was because of some very poor attempts at humor, that served more to become very irritating than eliciting a laugh. The love interest for Nick, the feisty Jenny Halsey played by the relatively unknown actress Annabelle Wallis, was just very bland and boring. I don’t think this was really the fault of the actress, but simply because the script just didn’t give her much to work with. As such the romantic part of the film, if you can even call it that, just wasn’t really filled with a lot of chemistry.
One would think that in a film called the Mummy, the focus would be on the erm….mummy. But weirdly enough there is another monstrous character thrown into the mix namely Doctor Jekkyl. Played by veteran actor Russel Crowe, I have to admit that this was certainly the most interesting role of the film. Crowe seemed to enjoy playing the part, especially since it’s a character he normally doesn’t portay. Still, when he turned into his monstrous counterpart mr. Hyde there was some serious overacting from mr. Crowe, that detracted from him becoming a truly menacing force. One also has to wonder what the point was of bringing Doctor Jekkyl to the movie in the first place, as I would say the threat of Ahmanet would be enough to work with. Speaking of her, actress Sofia Boutella did a great job of bringing her to life, if you will pardon the pun. She had a powerful and commanding presence and radiated an aura of evil that made it a really fun role. I would say she was surely the best thing about the movie, and every scene that she appeared in usually resulted in something cool. It’s sad though that she had far too little screentime, and the movie seemed more concerned with showing off Tom Cruise than her.
Well, as you can probably guess from the tone of this post so far, I didn’t really enjoy this reboot. Was there nothing in the movie that was good however? I guess that would be taking things a little bit too far. The special effects and some of the action sequences were enjoyable, especially a plane crash in the early beginning of the film. That lastnamed scene was filmed in a zero gravity environment, meaning that the actors were weightless during the filming of that. I have to admit that it definitely made the scene more spectacular and realistic. But all in all this version of the mummy should have remained burried. Yep, that was another bad pun I used. It’s a real shame honestly, as it was a movie, especially considering two heavy weight Hollywood actors were involved, that could have been so much better. The lack of succes of this movie also meant the immediate end of the Dark Universe franchise, before it even got a chance to shine. Oh well, at least we still have the 1999 version which was so much more enjoyable and I recommend giving a rewatch. Who knows, maybe I will do the same and post a review for that one sometime in the future.
I give The Mummy a 5 out of 10 score.
I’d completely forgotten about the original plans for the Dark Universe. It’s a shame that one bad movie could put an end to all the others.

Yeah, it’s definitely a real shame alright. I think the entire concept for the Dark Universe was very interesting, and I think over time it could have become a very interesting franchise. Alas, it was not to be 😢 Who know maybe some day we will get a reboot? Everything is possible these days! 😊

Having recently rewatched the Brendan Fraser Trilogy as it aired on dutch tv, I realised this was just a tad worse than I initially given it credit for.. at least the Frasier trilogy embraced the campiness. This one should have done the same.
This one fell into the same pitfalls as League of Extraordinary Gentlemen fell in for me. While Jekyll was a great character, I do think they should not have revealed his name until his first change and just introduced him first name only to keep a surprise element, now we knew what was coming and then it felt forced.
The whole super power plot also fell through a bit for me with the mummy’s motives never making a whole lot sense to me, she adapted to the modern life way to easy as well. At least Imothep had some followers and cultists, had they given those to her it would have fixed so much problems and you could highlight she was a mummy. Insert any generic monster name (Siren, minotaur, angel even) you could have changed her”race” to that and it would not have really impacted the movie all that much.
As for Nick being hard to care for I’d totally agree, again Brendan Fraser played an asshole as Rick O’Connell but part of his demeanour was to fit the campy tone, much like how Indiana Jones can be a butt of a guy but it was presented in a much more comic booky way so you aren’t as offended by it. Rick..is your clichéy ..hero guy… Nick felt much more like a plot device and I constantly felt like Tom Cruise was stroking his ego in how Nick developed.
It’s impressive how he does his own stunts but quite a few felt like “hey look I do my own stunts’ Where Rick sometimes looked like a stupid fool.. thus humanising him.. Nick was never humanised just caught up in forces greater than him.. while also overcoming these in mostly slick ways. With some whimsy but never really at the cost of Nick, making him a lot more shallow.

Wow, thanks for this very extensive and great comment in the first place! 😊
I completely agree with everything you wrote. As mentioned I usually like Tom Cruise, but he was just really out of place in this movie. And I think that in some way he felt the same. He was just acting very awkwardly and the stunts also weren’t as impressive as in his other films, lol…and as you say: he was stroking his ego. The sad thing is that this film eventually ended what could have been a new and maybe pretty cool franchise in the form of the Dark Universe. And that for me is what made it even worse.
Agreed….” The Mummy” didn’t feel like a mummy at all, and even though she was at least one of the few things I thought was okay in the movie, she really felt like any kind of monster.
Yeah…true: naming him Jekyll took away a lot of the surprise, and another thing that this film simply didn’t handle well. That, and I also felt that Jekyll had more of an impact than the whole Mummy character, which seems strange for a movie with the title “The Mummy lol😂😂”
The Frasier trilogy was just a lot more fun, and way more enjoyable, especially BECAUSE it was so campy. This could have been much better, but instead this ended up being a pretty bland film, which is a real shame 😢 Thanks again for your great comment!

I’m not a big fan of remakes in general as they are frequently just special effects showcases that lose much of the heart and appeal of the original. I do try and stay open minded whenever I do see one though, but very few have really won me over. I haven’t seen this remake as I thought the Brendan Fraser version was good enough. And if even you didn’t love it, I’ll probably keep it as a pass 🙂

Yeah, it’s the same with me. I’m in general also not a fan of remakes/reboots or whatever else kind of names they came up with these days, and this is another great example of why that is. Very few remakes have won me over to be honest. The Brendan Fraser version is definitely much more enjoyable, and really you are not missing anything with this film. It’s really forgettable to be sure😊

Don’t get me started on ‘pointless’ remakes, Michel!
I could be here all night, and it’s almost 6 pm in Beetley, so I have wine to open, and a dinner to cook. 🙂
As you guessed, I won’t be watching this, even when it’s free to watch on TV.
Best wishes, Pete.

Lol 😂 Well…it would be a great discussion piece Pete😊 Seriously, I completely agree. With the occasional exception, most of the time I think remakes/reboots and all kinds of other names they give these things are pointless. Especially when it comes to certain classic films. This one really was another great example of a near total failure. Some nice scenes were just not enough to make this a fun watch, and you are right to give this one a pass, as you are not missing out on anything here😉😊

Fantastic review Michel. I have to be honest and say I’m not a fan of Cruise’s as I find myself unable to separate his personal life from his professional one. I’m the same with Woody Allen. On top of this, I’m a huge fan of the first two Mummy movies with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, so I’d still have probably boycotted this no matter who played the starring role.

Haha…as I said I can understand that. I really think in real life, he has done some pretty crazy stuff. But he has done some very good things for films, and well I do have enormous respect for him as an actor and especially stunt guy (the things he did for the latest mission impossible with the helicopter and even breaking his ankle were just out of this world). But well sometimes you just really don’t like someone and it’s hard to seperate that in films. So really, no apologies necessary 😊

Yes! Like it was generally good ideas (Crowe would kill it in a much better written Jekkyl and Hyde movie in my opinion) Sofia Boutella is amazing but it was just a mish-mash with the two leads being all wrong in the first place.
No offense to Annabelle Wallis but Evelyn/ Rachel Weisz is a favorite from this type of movie. She did it better nearly 20 years ago. They wanted to make a monster-verse like Marvel’s Cinematic Universe but they did what D.C. has done too fast, not well thought out and all at once.
Which is to bad because I would love a really great monster-verse!
LikeLiked by 2 people
I agree. I think if this would have been more thought, and maybe Crow appearing later in the film, as sort of a set up for a movie of his own, this could have been really enjoyable. But the script, and Cruise just not being suited for a role such as this, this was just a major disappointment.
Like you, I also would have loved a monster-verse, and well it ended up being a erm..monster film, just not the positive kind😔 Who knows, maybe at some point, someone is going to be doing it better. We can only hope🤞😊

If this had been in the same tone as Van Helsing, I would have loved it. I like a good mix of cheese and serious. This tried to be way too serious AND also wanted to rush some kind of MCU of their own (Monster Cinematic Universe).

I could not agree with you more. This one was way to serious, and the attempts at humor that they did try, just simply fell flat and weren’t all that funny 😔 It’s a real shame that their Dark Universe didn’t get farther than this one movie, as it could have been enjoyable if done well.

I loved the rebooted Mummy because of Evy. She’s a librarian who kicks butt because of her knowledge and not her sexuality. Even in the second Mummy movie she learns how to fight, but she still was a great character. There wasn’t a strong female character in this movie.
LikeLiked by 2 people
I completely agree. Evy was a terrific character, and a main reason why that film worked so well. Here though the female lead just wasn’t interesting at all, and an incredibly dull character. No fault of the actress that played here, but simply because of a very bad script😔

I seriously don’t know what to think of that Mummy, I didn’t saw the orignal of 1939, but I did enjoyed the one with Brendan Fraisier (only the two first tho, after that I just feel like they were trying to milk it), the 2017 version as you said the actress playing the mummy really did a great job at portraying her, there was something mesmerizing about his performance, the rest felt flat to me, it just another big budget movie from Hollywood.

True, the third one of the trilogy while I still enjoyed it, just wasn’t as much fun as the original two. Also because they replaced the original actress.
This version though was simply not enjoyable, it was rather dark, the humor felt flat and uninspired, and it definitely felt like just another one of those really big budget movies. Real shame, because if done well, this really could have been the start of a fun franchise 😊

I agree that the 1999 movie was much better than this. Should have focused on the Mummy, instead of introducing Jekkyl , but I guess they felt a cameo was required to set up other films in the Dark Universe. Didn’t work out, as the series died with this. Shame, because a line of monster movies set in the same universe had potential.

Yeah so true! It all went way too fast (it can be compared a little too what DC tried to do with Batman V Supes and Justice League, althought those films were infinitely more enjoyable.
This really was a shame, had they been focussing on the Mummy alone, it might have been much better 😊

Fantastic review, Michel. The 1999 movie will indeed be the only relevant Mummy movie I’ll have seen myself. Just from the first teaser trailer, I had a feeling this adaptation was going to flop. I’m personally not much of a fan of Tom Cruise and just appreciate him for his stunts and the sheer fun of the later Mission Impossible movies. Sucks that the monster universe project is now dead though. Could’ve been a cool project but the movies have struggled so far…

Thank you so much! That’s always nice to hear😊 Yeah this was one movie that unfortunately should not have been made. Cruise was simply not made for this type of role, and the film itself felt rushed. My biggest regret however is the fact that we now will never get this Dark Universe, a project that could have potentially been very cool. Oh well, luckily we still have plenty to watch😊😊

Ohhh this is sad .. when I was reading the story, I was actually thinking hey this has potential. But once I read your full review I get it now. Sigh. But yeah it happens. I hate it when the male leads have a romantic interest just for the sake of it. Like what happened here, the female actors abilities just get ruined on a bad script. I feel it happens too much in movies although things are changing nowadays. I think more adaptations will come into movies as the fascination with the Mummy never really does die!
