“So, did you see the soccer game last night?” I can’t remember the number of times I have heard that line said in the place where I work. I have never understood the appeal of running around on a big green field chasing a ball. (But then again, I hate sports altogether, so I am probably not the best person to talk about this). It becomes even more “fun” for me when grown men and women go into these lengthy discussions about what their favorite teams did right or wrong in a particular match and they become all emotional about it as well. “That referee should let his eyes get checked out” or “ Jeez, that goal so and so made was so incredible”. Uggh, fun times indeed. Well, people probably think the same about me when I get emotional about a great movie or anime that I saw, so yeah it’s probably best that I just stop talking about how much I hate soccer and get to the real point of all this. Namely a review of this fun new action flick starring Dave “ Guardians of the Galaxy” Bautista. And yep, you might have guessed it from both the title and this little intro, it has something to do with soccer. But not in the way you might think though.
Michael Knox is a former soldier who still tries to come to terms with the loss of his brother in Afghanistan. He cares very much for his young niece, a rebellious teenager called Danni who has had her own struggles with accepting the death of her father. Michael decides to take her to a big soccer match in order for the both of them to spend some time together. Which would have been a very good idea, were it not for the fact that a bunch of Russian terrorists have targeted the match. An enormous amount of explosives are set to go off in the stadium, unless their demands are met. Michael soon finds himself right in the middle of this, and matters are not really helped when his niece disappears on him. With the aid of a nervous venue staffer called Faisal, the ex-soldier begins the search for his niece. But time is running out for Michael, as the clock ticks down to the end of the match and possibly the end of all the lives in the stadium….
Do you remember the 80’s action flicks? Where we had good old Stallone and Schwarzenegger lead the charge in over the top, totally not credible but oh so much fun action flicks? This one pretty much almost feels like it was made in that era. It has a B-movie vibe, but one that at least for me did not fail to really conjure up some stupid grins on my face during a couple of great action sequences. Yes it’s a cheesy movie and sometimes has some horrible lines in it too. One that especially made me cringe was when Michael was fighting with the lead terrorist in trying to obtain the trigger to the explosives. A police officer was shouting to him to not let him trigger the detonator. No, really? That’s so helpful indeed! Sorry, for my sarcasm but trust me when I say that I really did enjoy this movie a lot. It doesn’t try to pretend to be anything else but an action film and pretty much has all the cliches in it that we have seen before. Yes, it’s yet another Die Hard clone, but even so, it’s a very enjoyable one.
Dave Bautista carries this movie starring as the reluctant hero Michael. What he lacks in acting skills, he makes up for in charm. You can’t help but form a bond with this guy and you want nothing more than seeing him administer his own form of justice on the lowlife thugs. Speaking of them, they are just your basic stereotype villains. Ray Stevenson plays the role of the main terrorist, and does a good enough job in portraying a pretty loathsome individual. It’s interesting to see that it seems we are almost getting back to the time of the cold war. So many movies have Americans pitted against Russians that it almost seems to me that World War III is imminent again. Let’s hope not, but it is a sign of the times we seem to be living in. One would almost forget that Pierce Brosnan is in this films as well. The former Bond actor, has a relatively minor role, but a very important one. And it seems that he had fun playing it too, not withholding the terrible Russian accent he has. (One often has to wonder why they bother with doing those accents in the first place).
The script not surprisingly isn’t a highly original one. It borrows heavily from another similar action movie that you might recall, called Sudden Death starring the “ Muscles from Brussels”. But I wasn’t really bothered by that in the least. As a lover of action films, I just had a great time with this movie. My taste in films is very diverse, but sometimes I just need something simple and fun to reset my brain. This film pretty much served that purpose. Some nice fistfights, chase scenes and shoot-outs combined with a likeable lead, made this into an entertaining ride from start to finish. It would almost get me to like soccer. Well, no I didn’t believe that last one either. Anyways, this certainly won’t be a movie for everyone, but if you like simple but fun action movies, I highly recommend checking this one out. It won’t blow your mind, but it will in all likelyhood give you a great night off after a long hard day’s work. So, let’s see now, what’s my final score?
I give Final Score a 8 out of 10 score.
Haha I noticed this on SKY tv the other day. There seems to be a lot of these made for TV movies popping up lately. I used to enjoy football before it become a lavish lifestyle for the rich and famous. I will give this a watch but it would have been far less glamorous if it was Grimsby V Blackpool on a rainy Tuesday evening. BTW, I love them types of games. Great read.

Well, this one is currently in the cinemas, I saw it yesterday, and it was just a very fun film! Lol, and fair enough I know a lot of people love them games 😊 And this film certainly has a bit of that vibe from those types of matches that you are referring too 😊
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the post! 😀

It went straight to sky cinema in the UK. I do like the actors in it so it will be worth a watch 🙂

Okay, well in that way at least you will be able to see it already, which is cool. I think you will have a fun time with it. Just grab a soda and some popcorn, and sit back😊. Hope you will enjoy it!

Good review… Don’t know much about this actor, but if you have given 8 then it has got to be a fun flick. I was glad to see that you are a bit of a fashionista, you seem to know what outfits suits the women. Go Michel!!!🎉🎊🎈🎈

Thank you 😊😊 Yeah it was definitely a fun flick one of those fun “sit back, relax, grab some popcorn and just enjoy kind of movies ” lol😂😂
Haha..I wouldn’t go so far as me being a fashionista lol😂😂 I have probably the worst kind of fashin sense…as in…not any kind of fashion sense 😂😂 Thanks for the compliment though Shalini! 😘😊

I’ve always thought that there’s a lot to be said for simple, fun action films. I like big plots and clever at arcs, don’t get me wrong, but the 80’s action style is so memorable. You can pay attention or not and still enjoy it just the same.

Could not agree with you more on that! As much as I love good dramas or movies that tell a clever story, I will never lose my love for simple and fun action movies either. And this one is certainly one of those 😊😊

We all need that good action flick to watch every once in a while. Break break movies or shows.

Absolutely, I try to see one at least every week when I can. It’s always a nice way to relax in my opinion 😊😊

I agree with all of your review and yes, it was a clone of the Die hard and often cheesy but I just felt something “feel good” about this movie! I actually loved it!

Well, I know exactly what you mean with the “ feel good” feeling. I saw this movie yesterday in the theatres and I just left it with this big grin on my face. It was a lot of fun, and while it certainly wasn’t the most original film ever made, it was well done, and just entertaining from beginning to end. And sometimes that is just all you need 😊

Just FYI: Soccer is not just chasing a ball around a big field.. sometimes you can pass the ball to your teammates with your head! lol I played once, I hate when other players kick my leg instead of kicking the ball. Do you really remember scripts in movie you watch? That’s pretty awesome by the way! 🙂

Haha😂😂 Well, thanks for that extra bit of information lol 😂 Yeah, I have played it too when I was in school and still young, but I never liked it, not even when I played it myself.
Well..not the entire script of course lol. But yeah I do pay attention to the way a story is written. In some films I’m already forming the review I plan to write in my head 😊 Thank you! 😊

Another great review! 👏👏👏
But
Im not sure it’s fair to simplify soccer to just running around a green field kicking a ball . Granted I’m not a sports fan either . My grandpa would simply watching anything as staring at a screen immobile for hours wasting time.
Anything can be simplified to sound mundane.

Thank you so much, always nice to hear from you 😊😊
Haha, well I was being a little bit sarcastic of course with that remark. I definitely know there is more to it than running around on a field kicking a ball. But well, will never become a fan of it that is for sure lol 😂😂
Thanks again! 😊😊

I was a huge football fan during my teens, but these days I barely keep up with the sport as I have other interests. Be aware that you don’t have to be a sport fan to enjoy sport anime, so I would recommend watching some of those shows.
Bautista was funny in Guardians. This movie sounds like a good fit for him. Lets him take center stage and kick ass, which is what he does best.

Well, I have pretty much hardly ever liked sports (although back in the day I did enjoy a good tennismatch when there were still the fun players such as mcEnroe and Becker), but other than that it has never really interested me. Funny you say that about anime: I acutally am watching one right now called Hanebado! And I am quite enjoying that one.
Bautista really was in his element here. He basically carried this film by himself, which is how it should be. It really was a fun and quite enjoyable movie 😊

I was busy with the readathon I’m just seeing your new movie review… I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t heard of this one. hehe. 🙂 🙂
But like you I’m not so into sports that much, I don’t know if i’d enjoy watching this. The only sports I watch is Basketball…
Also never been an athletic person. I rather read than run around even when I was a kid. 🙂
By the way, I already watched Mission Impossible: Fallout.. It was a good one like you said. 🙂

Haha, well that is nothing to be embarrased about at all. For one thing the film just came out last week, for another it’s not a movie that had a really big marketing campaign either. 😊
Well…as this film pretty much isn’t about sports (it only takes place in a football stadium where a soccer match happens to be taken place) it’s safe to say that if you like action film, this one will entertain you 😊
Haha, I haven’t been either. I never liked sports probably has a lot to do with the fact that I was never good at it😉
Nice to hear that you enjoyed Mission Impossible. Certainly one of the best films I have seen all year! 😊

Then if it’s an action movie, I’ll enjoy it. 🙂 🙂 🙂
I don’t get any enjoyment in sports, I easily get tired. I hate being sweaty, it affects my mood. hehe…

Living in Manchester I grew up as an avid football (soccer) fan, although I quickly grew out of the game as I left my teens. I hadn’t heard of this film although it sounds like good switch-off-your-brain entertainment. Dave Bautista seems making a good fist of his film career, following in the footsteps of his erstwhile wrestling rival The Rock.

Haha, my father is a very fanatic football fan, he has always loved the sport, but it never carried over to me lol 😊😊
It’s exactly that: good switch-off-your-brain entertainment. It’s a fun film, and if you don’t expect too much from it, you will have a blast watching it. Definitely think Bautista has it in him to follow in the footsteps of The Rock 😊

This sounds like the kind of movie that Sean will love and I will not. He even loves Bautista but I don’t think he’s heard of this.

Haha, that might be true 😊 Well, it just came out last week, and there hasn’t been a huge marketing campaign for it, so I’m not surprised. It’s a fun little switch your brain off movie though, so I hope Sean will enjoy it 😊

Never mind chasing the ball, I’ve never understood the appeal of running, full stop hehe 🤣🤣
I’m with you on the accents thing 🙂 When someone appears in a film with a really bad noticeably fake and put on Irish accent, everyone here cringes really hard and understandably get a little annoyed if the accent is ridiculous. 🙂 One would really wonder why they don’t just cast someone from the country if they want their character to have the proper accent 🙂
As for the movie, it sounds like a very fun action flick 🙂 I’ll have to remember it, next time I get the craving for an action movie 😀

Haha…you are so right. I get tired just by thinking about running lol 😂😂
Well, sometimes they get the accent thing right, but it’s pretty rare. Usually it just makes for a laughing experience lol 😂😂 Good question though. Probably because they like casting well known actors.
This film certainly was a lot of fun. It might not be very original, but it’s still a great watch that you can just sit back and relax to 😊

This reminds of another post you tweeted about recently. The kind that doesn’t take up too much brainspace and is just for entertainment. This too sounds like that. I can understand the kind of frustration you feel when people start discussing sports! But they seem to show a similiar reaction to my interests so I just don’t think too much about it. Just like you do. The detonator dialogue does sound really funny ! Overall nice post!

Haha, so true, this one doesn’t take up a lot of brainspace (like at all 😂😂) but it’s still a movie that you can’t help but smile at, as it’s really been a great and fun watch😊😊
Yeah, true, that is the same what happens to me too…people usually start zoning off when I talk about my hobbies 😂😂
Thank you very much again for the kind words! 😊😊

Saw the trailer for this when it was first released and thought it was pretty insane, but still looked fun hahah I’m glad to hear you had a good time with it, and clearly the action scenes didn’t seem to disappoint too. I do feel like I shouldn’t go into this movie with any expectations and look to just have fun too. Great review, Michel. 😀

I’m a fan of good old 80s action movies. This sounds exactly like something that would be made in that era. Dave Bautista is proven to be reliable, even in his less than stellar movie. Turning to be a much more enjoyable actor than I thought he would be.

I’m a huge fan of those films myself. Every year I at least watch a few of them just to bring bang some of that nostalgia so to speak 😊True, I’ve seen him in Bus 657 (also known as Heist) and he had a pretty good role in that one as well. I hope he will continue to make movies like that, and he might follow in the footsteps of his fellow wrestler The Rock 😊 Thanks for your comment! 😊😊

Thanks Michel. Don’t worry though. I have seen a doctor and this usually happens to me this time of year. Between allergies and the change of seasons, I’m primed for an increase in migraines. They in turn disrupt my sleep which then causes my fibromyalgia and neuropathy to get worse. In previous years I’ve pushed passed it and not let it effect my blogging, but for the past few weeks I just haven’t had the energy or concentration to keep up.🙇🏻♀️
