I don’t think that I am the only one when I say that I sometimes like a good bad guy even more than a hero. And if I am the only one that says that, well then I guess I must be weirder than I thought. Anyways all crazyness aside, I just love a good villain. And in comics we certainly have a host of those. Even better, we don’t just call them villains, some we even call SUPER-villains. But are all of these so called bad guys, really bad? While some certainly are pure evil and have no real redeeming qualities, there are also those that have a moral code that we might even identify with. Let’s also not forget those that are, pardon my french, just bat shit crazy. As I tend to sometimes be a little bit crazy myself, I usually enjoy those the most. So, at some point someone thought it would be a good idea to make a comic that teams up some of the major bad hombres in the DC comics universe and let them save the world. In the history of terrible ideas, that one really seems to be at the number one spot right? Well…no. Because it worked and of course it’s no surprise that at some point a movie was made too.
Suicide Squad takes place after the events of Batman v Superman. The world is left without it’s greatest hero, and humans try to do what humans do best: they try to find a suitable replacement. Because really what if the next Superman/woman, turns out to be not such a benevolent being? Intelligence officer Amanda Waller has an idea that at first seems totally nuts, but might just be the key to protecting the Earth from new threats. Codenamed Task Force X, it’s a team comprised of some of the worst criminals that are contained in the Belle Reve Special Security Barracks. Chief amongst these are hitman Floyd Lawton also known as Deadshot and the totally insane Harley Quinn. But of course it wil not really come as a surprise that they are not jumping at a chance to become heroes. Nonetheless when an ancient threat appears in the form of the evil witch known as the Enchantress, the team is sent on it’s first mission. A mission where the stakes are very high. How high you say? Well how about the continued survival of the entire human race?
This movie is already almost two years old, and I have only just seen it. Yup. I know, that is just crazy, really what am I doing with my life. Okay enough jokers, erm jokes. Let’s dive into my thoughts on this film. It’s hard not to compare a movie like this to The Avengers. The only difference being that in this film we don’t have superheroes teaming up, but a bunch of bad guys. That we don’t know much about. And that is one of the biggest problems this movie has. When the first Avengers film came out, we already were introduced to the likes of Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Here though, we get a bunch of characters that people who like comics might certainly be familiar with. But the regular audience probably doesn’t know much about them. And they are thrown at you with an incredible speed in the beginning of the film. That in itself would not necessarily be a bad thing. But some just had too little back story to really form an attachment to them. Sure, they look cool, but still it wouldn’t have hurt to maybe find out a little bit more about them.
Luckily though, there are two characters that really carry the movie. It has to be said, Will Smith playing Deadshot does a phenomenal job with this role. He really steps up to the plate in bringing to life a character that is supposedly evil, but honestly really isn’t. It’s one of those truly anti-hero type of characters, who does everything for his daughter, and that you just want to see come out on top. And then there is Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie. She is absolutely amazing. Harley is portrayed as a seductive, sexy, complete whackjob of a woman. However she is probably the most human character out of this entire ensemble. Her love for the Joker (In this film played by a criminally underused Jared Leto), drives her forward. Don’t underestimate her though, because she is lethal as hell as she shows in many of the films most badass scenes. The rest of the squad is comprised out of a lot of cool characters that I would loved to have getten to know better, but alas, that was not to be.
Suicide Squad doesn’t really feel like a movie to me. It has some great ideas, and there are definitely a couple of scenes that were fun to see, but it just almost felt like I was watching a bunch of clips woven together. The storyline, such as it is, is just really thin. We have a threat that just doesn’t feel like much of one, simply because it lacks enough background to really feel dangerous. The film is mostly comprised of a two hour long, cgi filled, shoot-em up. The saving grace of this movie really are the terrific performances by Smith and Robbie. Those two alone make the movie still worthwhile to watch. This film really could have been gold. It has a great premise, with a bunch of fun characters, but it ultimately falls short. So, once again DC unfortunately fails to really go to war with their biggest rival Marvel. But then again, who is keeping score anyway. Ultimately, it’s still a movie worth seeing at least once. Just don’t expect to see anything earthshattering here.
I give Suicide Squad a 6 out of 10 score.
What is cgi filled?
Seems like a good movie… Maybe I should get Netflix soon

CGI means, Computer Generated Imagery or in short visual effects. I only know this due to watching plenty of Korean Variety shows, they use CGI so much. And I googled it when I first heard it,. hehe.

By the way, great review Raist… 6/10 would be my rating too. and you are so right, Will Smith and Robbie saved this movie.. I loved their scenes together.. 🙂
And yep, Marvel still has the throne. Though I was once a big DC fan.. When everyone else’s toys are Barbies, Mines Superman dolls. My blankets and pillowcases were Justice Leagues… hehe I think I still am a fan but not of the films..

Thanks! Yeah it just wasn’t all that great. Definitely seen better films than this one. The movie really had a lot of potential, but ultimately fails. Oh well. I’ve seen worse than this one, that’s for sure. I am more of a Marvel fan myself, but have a newfound respect for DC comics anyway😊

I think all DC films have a LOT of potential but they all fail somehow and make me sad, really…And yeah I’ve seen worse than Suicide Squad too, in fact I remember laughing when I watched it when it came out. so I enjoyed it somehow.. have you watched the latest Justice League?

Nope, actually that is the next movie that I plan on seeing sometime in the upcoming days as it’s the last DC film that I haven’t seen. But already don’t have very high hopes for that one, so will wait and see and lower my expectations enough. Still think I will enjoy it enough 😊

This movie was incredibly hyped, which for me already set a certain expectation of it. It wasn’t met to be honest. The movie was fine. Definitely a must see but not one to have on blu-ray, in my opinion.
I remember when the trailer came out. Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen, timing every scene to fit with the music….I loved the trailer for this moive. Heck, to this day I think it is a personal favourite of mine. Alas, the movie is not. I agree with the rating. A 6 for the movie and a 9.5 for the trailer 😂 another one of those, the trailer is better than the movie moments!

I was totally hyped for the film after having seen the trailer for it, as it really was such an amazing trailer. I really thought this was going to be the film that would finally have DC take a little revenge. But…as you say it was not to be. It was an okay film, with some fun scenes and moments, but…that was about it. The new Aquaman film looks set to become really cool, but…again…it’s a trailer so the full movie might be a different story altogether. Oh well, we’ll see I guess 😊

I was one of those folk expecting more from this film than I got. The comic series was great but the film wasn’t at the same level.
That being said, I still enjoyed it. 6 out of ten is a fair score for Suicide Squad.

We have this on DVD. It’s one that I would have been disappointed with had I expected a storytelling amsterpiece. I actually jsut wanted soemthign fun that could play in the background from it though, so in that regard it really gave me all that I wanted. It wasn’t as terrible as many made it out to be, nor was it fantastic, but it entertained me, so that was job done.

True enough. It certainly wasn’t a bad film per se, hence my score is still in the positive. But I did expect a little bit of a better movie for this. But true enough, there was enough entertainment in it, and it was worth the watch for Deadshot and Harley alone 😊😊

Did you see the regular or director’s cut version? I only own the theatrical cut, so there’s a bit less Joker in mine.

I only saw the regular version as well. Not the director’s cut. Leto was pretty good in the role, but well..just way too little screentime unfortunately 😘

Aye, I liked him in it. I thin kthere’s like six extra minutes of him or something like that in the DC. Still, he’s getting his own film, so that’s cool.

Is he really? Last thing I heard is that Joaquin Phoenix will be in a new Joker movie (even already saw a small bit of footage with him) 😊

Yup. The Phoenix one is an unrelated standalone. Leto’s tires in with the main film universe. Or that’s what I read anyway.

DC have made quite a few mistakes in how a film should look. I think Wonder Women and eventually AquaMan will put that right somewhat. Still the universe they are in does not look real, so it’s hard to feel any sense of danger in them. I do like the sound of “DC Dark” with the new Joker film coming soon. Hopefully this will be a real as The Dark Knight Trilogy. Great Read, Bad Film 😂

Yeah…it’s not a truly horrific film. I have definitely seen worse, but exactly as you say…there just isn’t any sense of danger in them whatsoever. Wonder Woman was a step in the right direction for sure. Next up for me will be Justice League, which will probably not be very good either.
Hopefully the new Joker film will be good. I already saw a small clip of footage where Phoenix showed the new look of The Joker, and it certainly didn’t look bad. FIngers crossed! 😉

I thought this movie was a lot of fun, especially the Harley character. I hadn’t done the comic books so apart from the Joker I didn’t know the characters (and still don’t really- as you said, not much back story). Superhero movies are my thing in spite of never doing the comics, and I agree Marvel has the edge, but I really like the darker humour in the D.C movies.

Harley was certainly the best thing about this film, can not agree with you more on that. The best scenes in this film were the ones with her. I would have just loved to spent a little bit more time with the other characters, who were just a little bit too bland.
Well: I love superhero movies myself as well (no…really…gosh..what a surprise lol 😂😂). I’m hoping that the new Aquaman film hopefully will be good, and put DC back on the board. The trailer looked promising 😊😊

You hit the nail on the head when you referred to this as a collection of clips. That is the only thing that has stuck with me about this film – the feeling that the movie’s soundtrack was picked first and that determined everything else. It didn’t need to make sense, it just needed to be loud and cool. But it ended up just being loud.

Absolutely true. I think even that’s what they may have done. Something along the lines of “ Hey this song sounds good, let’s see what scene we can add for this one” . It wasn’t the worst movie I have ever seen, but this really could have been so much better really. Definitely a missed opportunity😔

I was sooooo disappointed by this movie. I remember being so excited about it and went to see it as soon as it came out, but by the end of the movie I was just like….meh. Like you said, there were some great ideas. It’s just such a shame that they were in a rush to do this movie. Like, it would have been awesome for them to do the same as Marvel. Bring out individual movies for some of the characters like Harley, Deadshot, Diablo…and THEN do a Suicide Squad movie. I think you really described this movie really well, as being ‘thin’. I hope that if they did another one of these movies, they learn from this movies mistakes.

The trailer for this when it first came out, with the Queen song, it was just amzing and really got me excited for it. I missed it due to some circumstances in the cinema. Now having seen it for myself, (I was already prepared it wasn’t really good) I am not sorry I didn’t see it in the theatre back in the day. That really would have worked a lot better if they did individual movies first. But, well instead we got this. Hopefully the new Aquaman film is going to be a fun watch, the trailer looks promising. But…then again so did the trailer for this lol 😂. Thank you for your comment😊

I absolutely agree with you Michel. I didn’t think Suicide Squad was as bad as the reviews made it out to be, but except for Will Smith and Margot Robbie, it was a bit underwhelming. I was especially disappointed in Jared Leto’s Joker, but I think he did the best with the material he was given. For me, the movie was worth watching just for Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn. It was exactly how I always pictured her in my head.☺️

There were a lot of problems with this film. First, the story was different from what the director intended and ended up back to front – they formed the group THEN a problem conveniently arises? Shouldn’t it be the other way round?
Second, the film was taken from the director’s hands and edited by the people who did the trailer, and editing trailers and editing whole films are two different processes but nobody explained this to the idiot who made that dumb decision. This is why the film is such a mess.

Yeah, I heard that this film has had quite a number of problems, especially with the editing part of the movie. It really is quite a shame, because this movie could have been so much better.
Cool characters, some good actors performing said characters, and enough lore to explore a much better story. It’s a real shame this turned out the way it did. But, well, very little to do about it.
As I said, I’ve certainly seen worse films, and there is still enough in it to enjoy it just enough. But I really felt this movie was a missed opportunity. Oh well, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose I guess😅

You are not weird. That’s definitely certain. Because sometimes, I too love a good bad guy. Take Loki for example. Anyway, I too agree with you about this film. Especially about the introduction of the characters. I am not a comic person, therefore it’s a bit confusing to see those characters with too fast introductions. The storyline isn’t that exciting as well. I found it rather boring. But, I do love Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She’s just amazing.

Do you read minds? Seriously, your post came out on the exact day I watched this for the first time too XD And has it been two years already? *hides away in shame*
Seriously though, you seem to share my exact thoughts. The movie felt so flat. It was supposed to be a badass yet fun masterpiece and it just didn’t do anything to me. It didn’t excite me, it didn’t make me laugh, it didn’t entertain me in the least. The script was cheesy as heck and the bad guys? Not that evil at all.
I do disagree about WIll Smith though, because I didn’t quite like his portrayal of Deadshot. I don’t know the character in the comic books so I won’t pretend to know what I’m talking about BUT I would have liked him to have been a bit more evil. He was such a softie! I honestly couldn’t see Deadshot, I only saw Will Smith. Does that make sense?
Margot Robbie was also pretty unimpressive to me. But then again, I feel these actors were really just given a shit script and done the best they could under the circumstances. The movie was BAD. Like, really bad.
I was so ecstasic to see it after that AMAZING trailer featuring Queen’s badass song but you know what? The trailer was so much better than the movie, by miles! How can a studio fuck up so much? xD
Anyway, sorry about the rant but I needed to vent. Everything in this movie was more about looks than actual execution and even though there were some really epic shots and cinematography, everything else was very meh.
Wonderful review, of course! 🙂 ❤

Haha, well, I wish I could read minds, I really could, but as far as I know, I still can’t lol😂😂 It is a crazy coincidence though that is absolutely true.
Well, you don’t have to hide in shame: unless I have too as well, but hey with so many movies coming out, there are bound to be films that you can miss out on.
That said, while I didn’t hate it as much as you did, I certainly felt this was a film that could have been so much better. Fair enough about Will Smith though. He was a different Deadshot than the one we see for instance in Arrow (great show by the way).So yeah I can understand what you are saying.
As for Margot….well…for me she really was the only real highlight in this film as I loved her performance. But so true though, they hardly had anything to work with really…as this was just a bunch of clips strung together it seems.
Haha, no need to apologise in any way: you may rant all you want here 😂😂 And I share many of your feelings for this film, so really no problem.

Nice review, Michel. It sure wasn’t the movie that was going to put Marvel to shame was it? Hahah I personally did have fun with the movie, but I won’t lie that it had plenty of issues that should’ve been dealt with better. Too much post-editing by Warner Bros made for a very choppy movie and that really is unfortunate. There’s an extended version for this movie that adds those couple of minutes too, and most of them features Leto’s Joker too, but I doubt they’ll change your thoughts on the overall movie though hahah Again, great review. 😉

For me this was another disappointing DC live action movie. I liked Harley and not a lot else. The movie might feel like a bunch of clips because the screenplay was written in a few weeks. I think the script would have benefited from a few more drafts.
If you want to watch a good Suicide Squad film I would recommend the animated feature Batman: Assault on Arkham.
