I have talked a lot about sequels on my blog in the past. Some people love them, some people hate them. One can’t deny that in the current movie climate sequels are coming out of the woodwork. Not a year goes by that we don’t get some kind of sequel to a movie that has been successful in the theatres. Usually for the sole reason to obviously make more money. But there are certain films that were so good, so incredible, that you don’t even want a second part. Huh? What’s that? Why would you not want a sequel to a movie that you loved? Well how on Earth could it ever surpass a film that left you in total amazement after you have seen it for the first time? So why tarnish that film with a follow up that can never be as good? I’m sure that is what the moviegoing audience must have thought when Aliens was released, seven years after Ridley Scott’s original Alien. That classic movie is a masterpiece. So how did, at the time relatively unknown director James Cameron, even dare to touch such a sacred work of art. Total blashphemy right? Wrong… People, stop your grinnin and drop your linen: LET’S ROOOOOCCCCKKKKKK!!!
At the start of Alien a small shuttlecraft is found by a salvageteam. Aboard is the sole survivor of the spacecraft Nostromo, Ellen Ripley. After her rescue she is shocked to learn that she has been in cryosleep for 57 years. When she tells the story of what happened to her and her crew, to a bunch of executives of The Company, no one really believes her. Especially since the planet where the Nostromo first encountered the terrifying alien species is now terraformed and has been occupied by a human colony for several years. In all that time no one ever reported anything out of the ordinary. Ripley is being dismissed and left to deal with her demons alone. Waking up in a cold sweat every night, Ellen feels like she is slowly losing it. But then she is contacted by Company man Burke, who tells her that all contact has been lost with the colony on LV 426, and that they need her help in finding out what is going on. At first Ripley is very reluctant to do so, but eventually she relents and together with Burke and a group of Colonial Marines she heads back towards the planet of her nightmares. But the nightmare is even worse than she imagined and not even a group of the toughest hombres of the galaxy might be enough to save the galaxy. This time it’s war….
Let me make one thing really clear to you before I am beginning this review. I almost know this film by heart. I can pretty much recount every single line of dialogue from this film. I could have written this review without even rewatching the movie itself. But the only reason I did watch it again anyway is because I am in complete and utter love with this film. You might even call it a small obsession. This is my alltime number 2 favorite movie, and the best science fiction film that I have ever seen in my entire life. (So Karandi I guess your question has been answered now). To compare Alien and Aliens is almost impossible as they are two completely different films. Where the first Alien is true horror, this second movie is an action film. While of course there are still horror elements in it (it would almost be impossible not to include those, I mean just look at the creatures themselves), it is not as claustrophobic as that first masterpiece. But that doesn’t matter as this film has an intensity and thrill level that more than compensates for that. This film is an express elevator to hell, and it doesn’t let up until the final credits.
A big part of what makes this film so memorable is the incredible cast of characters. Let’s start with the heroic Corporal Hicks, played by the in my opinion highly underrated actor Michael Biehn. He is just one of those men that has this natural charisma that you instantly like. In a very tense situation, Hicks is the one that stays frosty and inspires the troops with his calm and motivating presence. His on screen chemistry with Ripley works incredibly well, and there is an underlying romance that is never acted upon, but definitely there. The opposite of Hicks is Hudson played by the late Bill Paxton. Also serving as a bit of much needed comic relief, he has some of the best lines in the film, especially when he keeps losing his cool. In the end though he is every bit the hero that Hicks is. On the sleezeball side is the character of Burke, portrayed by actor Paul Reiser. It’s funny to see him play a role that is quite unusual for him as he normally portrays gentle characters that have a real sense of innate goodness in them. Burke though, is a slimy and utterly loathsome man that only has substantial dollar values in his mind, and has his own secret agenda for coming on this mission.
But, ultimately it is once again Sigourney Weaver who returns as Ripley, that is the driving force of this film. She got an Oscar nomination for her role and deservedly so. Even more than in the first movie, Ripley is a lean, mean fighting machine. But her love for the young child Newt, the sole survivor of the doomed colony is what makes you like her even more. The bond that forms between the two of them, is a mother and daughter kind of relationship and ultimately gives this film a true heart. And that is an incredible thing to pull off amidst all the action and incredible special effects. Because really let’s talk about that for a second. There is a fight sequence between Ripley driving a power loader and the Alien Queen that to date I am still in awe of. The way they filmed that sequence is just absolutely astounding, and in spite of it being a film that is now 32 years old, it doesn’t look fake at all. In fact you just have to wonder if the government somehow kept these aliens a secret from us. That’s how incredible this looks. And that scene contains one of the greatest lines ever in a movie. Don’t know what I am talking about? Just look at the clip down below.
I haven’t even talked about some of the other characters like Vasquez, or the android Bishop, but if you let me I could write a review that could possibly go on forever. And as that might become bit too boring I’m going to call it a day here. As this review contains not a single negative word from me about it, I can hear you wonder if I am being objective here. Quite possibly I am not. But for the life of me I really can’t think of anything that was bad in this film. This for me has been and always shall be the greatest single piece of science fiction moviemaking that I have ever had the pleasure of watching. A gripping, powerful and utterly moving film, that is accompanied by the terrific score of composer James Horner, you just have to see this movie at least once in your life. It is in my opinion the best sequel to a film that has ever been made, and I don’t think that there will ever be a greater sequel in movie history. Then again, I have been wrong before. So in the words of Hudson: Game over man! Game over!
I give Aliens a 10 out of 10 score.
I haven’t seen this movie in years but I loved it when I first saw it! I love the Alien franchise so much! Such an amazing film! Great post! 😄

Thank you so much. That is very kind of you to say. Alien 3 is very good too. I quite frankly love all the alien films, even part 4 as they all have their own kind of uniqueness to them. This one though, will always remain my favorite. I lost count of how many times I have seen it, but it would not suprise me if it’s about 40 or 50 times. Thanks again for your kind words 😊

This is such a good film! Glad to see it score a ten from you.
You need to get your hands on the audio dramas. River of Pain is the one based on this. And Out of the Shadows was the first one.
God, I love all things Alien.

Haha: me too. I can never get enough of anything Alien. That’s why I am still secretly hoping that Alien 5 is going to be happening. Probably wishful thinking I know…but still…I keep hoping anyway.
Those audio dramas are still both on my list. I have read the books themselves (they were both awesome) but I know you said that the audio dramas were both terrific. Hopefully I can make that happen this year 😊

I have always been keeping tabs online for possible new Alien films. They are so good. The voice actors are fantastic. Ripley actually sounds like Sigourney Weaver.

Great review of a great movie. I really like Michael Biehn too, in Terminator as Kyle he was lovely, and then he rocked it as the nutty bad guy in The Abyss. I agree he’s under rated.

Thank you so much 😊 Always nice to see a comment from you (hope you are doing okay 😀). Yeah, he really is very good and one of James Cameron’s go to actors I suppose as he appeared in 4 of his films (he got cut out of Terminator 2, but they restored that scene in a different cut). The Abyss was awesome by the way: he really played a great part in that one. Hmm…come to think of it, haven’t seen that one in ages. Might be nice to rewatch that one again. Thanks as always for your great comment and kind words 😊

Agreed. And ha ha, well what is his quote? Something like “It’s the finest movie with flying piranhas you’ll ever see?” But he took it over after it had already started so I’ll give him credit for making it not half bad.

Really, really good action film, but still the weakest of the original trilogy for me. The second they brought marines in, it removed all the tension for me. It felt kinda like … It didn’t matter how many aliens the are, marine are trained to adapt and fight against the odds, which means there’s a good chance at least a few people are going to survive. 1 and 3 both left me either that no one would survive.
The thing is, I really like Aliens, I just have trouble viewing it as an Alien film.

Hmm, that I guess is a good point, but on the other hand the moment they were pretty much left without weapons, it was erm…how should we put it? Game over man, game over 😂😂 But yeah I can understand your train of thought.
I’m thinking I might continue with part 3 somewhere later this year. Having done reviews for almost all of them (Prometheus and Covenant as well), I figure why not do 3 and 4 either 😊

No, I was just thinking after I pressed send, that those are left too…ooops…Oh well..it might actually be fun to do a review for those as well. They were not very good films, but…they did have their moments, and some of the fights were just plain awesome 😊😊
As for Resurrection…I really liked the monster at the end. That was designed very wel, and at the same time very sad too…

One interesting thing Cameron did with this one, was to follow a very similar pattern to the first one, and it worked very well. One thing I liked better in the first, though, wss that the alien was never really seen… the fear of the unknown was working at high speed.
LikeLiked by 4 people
Yes that is true. It usually works better for a horrormovie when things are kept in the dark. But as this was more of an action oriented piece than a horrorfilm it still worked very well for me.
And Cameron definitely did an awesome job with this one 😊

Awesome review, Michel! I’ve seen bits and pieces of all these Alien movies as I grew up and only did actually watch one fully, and.. it wasn’t the best one of the bunch (Alien vs. Predator). It was however fun since I was a kid though! 😀 I totally need to find a moment to go through these classic movies again now though. It’s always nice to revisit those scifi movies, especially when there’s a sudden resurgence of them (and really good ones too) nowadays (Blade Runner 2049? Annihilation?) 😀 Loved the passion you had for this movie throughout the review, sir. Keep it up! 😀

Ohhh, wel definitely Aliens vs Predator is fun, but it has pretty much nothing to do with these classic movies. But that said it was still enjoyable in it’s own right, and contained some fun easter eggs as well.
I love revisiting classic movies. In fact I was just saying to someone else I might also review Alien 3 and 4 seeing as to how I have done reviews for almost all of them now anyway.
And seriously Bladerunner 2049 was incredible. Absolutely loved that movie. Thanks again for these very kind words and that awesome comment 😊

There is a huge divide in my family over whether this sequel is better than the original. Some members argue for Alien because of the better horror elements, whereas myself and a couple of others argue for Aliens because of the fantastic characters and that truly fantastic fight sequence at the end.
Thanks for answering which side you come down on.
I loved this review. There’s so much passion and genuinely affection for this movie pouring out of every line. When I reached the end and you mentioned you hadn’t added in any negatives, I started trying to think of one and drew a blank. The movie is great fun. It works visually. The cast are fantastic. The special effects (despite the era) are still pretty impressive.
Actually, my only real criticism of the movie comes from a plot point where they tell the marines not to shoot in a particular situation and use flame units only, but don’t bother to tell them why. I kind of think if you’d told them why they might have been more inclined to follow that order.

Yes: I’m glad we are on the same side for this one! Yeah, as much as I loved the first one don’t get me wrong, this one was always the one I liked the most. It’s the characters really that make this film so good. All of them are so memorable, and fun. Even the characters that have relatively small parts you remember: that is casting done right I would say. And oh man, that fight sequence at the end: it was and still is amazing. The moment those blast doors open, and Ripley utterly that classic line, I still get goosebumps.
Yeah that is a bit baffling that part….but on the other hand, you know what Vasquez said to Gorman right? He always was an ***hole 😂😂 True enough though, it would have made more sense to tell them, that is true. I really had a blast rewatching the movie, and I am very glad that you enjoyed the movie. Well…this was probably it for sci fi/horror theme month. Don’t think I will be able to do another review in the upcoming days: but….March will be anime month (and I already had the random number generator pick the two animes I will be writing reviews for) One in particular will probably make you very happy.
Thanks very much for this very cool and kind comment 😊

In some ways that felt like another example of the division between command and grunts, the lack of trust and the attitude of “you command, they obey,” rather than regarding them as peers.
Fortunately Ripley quickly took control and provided some proper leadership.

Great review! Aliens is one of my favourite movies of all time that I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve watched it. I agree that one of the things that really makes this movie is the cast of characters (and there are so many great lines). And of-course there is the return of Ripley that Signorney Weaver portrayed so well. Having a whole heap of Aliens certainly helps too as they are one of the most fascinating monsters ever created. Of the franchise, I can’t go past the first two; both different, both brilliant. Hard to believe this movie as old as it is, but it has stood the test of time. Worthy of classic status.

Thanks so much, apreciate the kind words 😀 That is exactly one of the reasons why this movie is so awesome. The characters are truly great. I like the fact that even the smallest characters, that have relatively small parts, are still ones that you remember. Each time just has some kind of line to remember them by.
Sigourney is terrific in this role. There has been a rumour that there would be a part 5, with her reprising the role and Michael Biehn returning as well. Unfortunately, that project has pretty much died.
Could not agree more: this film has withstood the test of time remarkably well, and this in all likelyhood will not be the last time that I have seen this film😊 Thanks again for your great comment 😀

DEFINITELY a fantastic movie and a sequel done right!! It’s very rare to have a sequel that has people questioning whether it might be better than the first (although, I agree that it’s hard to compare the 2!) Definitely a fantastic cast (I miss Bill Paxton! 😭) and Bishop was such a great character, in my opinion… That may be weird but I loved to hate him and hated to love him. Lol! Thanks for the passionate review!

I hate this film. I know, it makes me something of a pariah in geekdom, but I was so sorely disappointed by this back in 1986. Cameron reduced a Lovecraftian nightmare to a silly bug-fight and I’ll never forgive him for it. He even made the greater mistake of making Ripley the star of the franchise, forcing it to shoehorn her into Alien 3 and even the fourth entry after she’d actually been killed off. Game Over, indeed man.

It is an entirely different movie, that is completely true. Where part 1 was much more horror, this is more of an action film 😊

Haha, that is quite the miracle that is for sure. I do think you might enjoy this one as this is the most un-alien like movie of them all, if you understand what I mean. I definitely think the decisions made in regards to Alien and Aliens, and between Terminator 1 and Terminator 2, strike me as the best way to handle a sequel. There’s a way in which simply trying to emulate the prior installment feels like a mistake to me, unless the story was intentionally left incomplete (i.e. Lord of the Rings).
But in many cases sequels do try to just “do it again”, when the reality is every story has to find its own way.
Granted, I’m sure many fans prefer more consistency, but I think sequels are often overly influenced by their predecessors, and I loved the fact that Alien and Aliens succeed on very different merits. The first is almost a supernatural haunting, while the second is very much a battle zone.

Totally agree. It’s great that it’s a sequel, but also has it’s own identity because it’s trying to do something completely different (and succeeds at that as well).
It’s interesting that you mentioned terminator. I have always seen those two films as one complete movie. But for that series it’s the other way around for me. I liked terminator 1 a little bit more than terminator 2. (But not by much). Terminator 2 is just more of a special effects driven film, where the first one is just more exciting and tense. But that said, they are both just amazing movies 😊😊

I watched it late at night during a TV run when I was a teenager and was absolutely gripped by it—it pretty much single-handedly led me into becoming a sci-fi fan.
