Can you believe it? This is already the final requested review for my Science Fiction & Horror theme month. But that doesn’t mean that this is the end of the month itself though. There are still some reviews coming up, one that is kind of a request as well, but I don’t want to give that one away yet. (Although there is probably one person reading this that knows what I am talking about). Now, this review was requested by someone that I really think the world of and is truly special. I am talking about the astonishing Dani who has a blog that focusses on books. Even if you don’t like books, I still urge you to follow her anyway though. You know how some people can have a rough time in their lives, but still triumph in the end? Dani pretty much wrote the book on that. She is a powerhouse of a woman, that just spreads so much happyness and joy around with her reviews and comments, that you cannot help but smile. And considering all that she has been through, that is something that still amazes me to no end. My respect for her is enormous. Her positive attitude is something inspiring and if this hasn’t convinced you to follow her now, go and check out her amazing blog and you will know what I mean. Dani, my amazing and kindhearted beautiful friend, as you are so fond of saying: you rock! This review is for you!
The review
Yes, we humans are at it again. In the 23rd century we begin colonizing new planets and wouldn’t you know it, we of course encounter a hostile alien species. Well, at least we know that we humans are always very peaceloving beings right? So what do we do when we encounter something that is hostile? We of course squash it. And in this case that term is pretty relevant as this hostile alien race are a bunch of bugs. Only not the kind that you can trample underfoot. No, I’m talking about big giant bugs that are as big as houses, and a few that are even bigger than that. These Arachnids, as they become known, are hellbent on destroying our beautiful planet, and so we go to war! But for a war one usually needs soldiers. The Federation is the organisation that governs the Earth and in order to gain citizenship that grants special privileges one can for instance, enlist in the military. John “Johny” Rico decides to become a soldier against his parents wishes. His girlfriend Carmen Ibanez and one of his best friends, Carl Jenkins soon join him in the Federal Service, together with Isabelle Flores (who secretly has a crush on Rico….awwwww). One of their first missions will sent them to the heart of the Arachnid race, their homeplanet Klendathu. And this is ofcourse going to be a peace of cake right? Erm…wrong. Soon John is about to find out that the human invasion force might have bitten of more than they can chew……
Starship Troopers was directed by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, who is responsible for such science fiction classics as Total Recall and Robocop. And most people that know his style will probably also know that he really isn’t one to handle things in a very subtle way so to speak. Extensive use of gore and sex/nudity are certainly some of his trademarks. One only has to watch Basic Instinct and you will get the picture. And this movie definitely isn’t an exception. In a pretty controversial scene we get a number of the male and female soldiers all taking a shower together, and yes they are naked. One has to wonder if this was a scene that was purely added to shock audiences or if it served any kind of purpose. But we have a film here that also is meant, in part at least, as a satire. The “benovelent” Federation, is little more than an institution that sends young people into a meatgrinder. But the way that is done, the propaganda it uses in for instance television commercials, is at times quite hilarious.
Another thing that one has to note is the actors that are being used in the roles of soldiers. Casper van Dien, Denise Richards and Patrick Muldoon are all way to pretty to be playing at Gi-Joe/Gi-Jane. But this was also clearly the intention of Paul Verhoeven. The acting in this film is quite atrocious. It’s so wooden at times that there are some scenes that become unintentionally funny. But in amongst the youngsters are luckily a few veterans such as Michael Ironside and Clancy Brown. Both of them have some fun parts in playing veteran soldiers that work as drill instructors, that try to get the new men and women into shape. Casper van Dien plays the hero of the movie, John “Johny” Rico (seriously who came up with that name), and he is just likeable enough to carry you through the film. Actress Dina Meyer’s character Isabelle, is one of the characters that you will like the most. She plays the tough woman soldier that kind of kicks ass, but also has a weakness, her love for Johny.
But where this movie excells at is the fights against the Arachnids. While I am not quite convinced by the special effects they used for the shots in space , they more than make up for this in the way they depict the bugs. Usually with films like these you see the monsters in total darkness. Here though, we get fight sequences in full daylight, that not only look enormously convincing, but are also highly entertaining. The multiple different species of Arachnids are definitely the highlight of this film. The fights are bloody and very gory, and we get to see people that literally get torn apart by these nasty critters. As such it is definitely not a movie that is for the faint of heart, or when you are easily shocked by violence. But, it has to be said, this is a war movie. And even though we are of course talking about a fictional war against an inhuman species, it’s still a war. And war is never pretty, no matter which way you look at it. And this comes across perfectly as Starship Troopers doesn’t pull any punches on that front.
So is Starship Troopers a film that is worth seeing? Well…..hell yes! I’m not going to lie here, this won’t be a film that pleases everyone. There is enough stuff in this film that probably will have some people raise their eyebrows, especially considering the acting involved and the extensive use of excessive gore and violence. But if one is willing to look beyond that, and enjoy the film for what it is, you will have a blast. This is just a solid peace of sciencefiction action film making, with cool creatures and some incredibly well made special effects fight sequences. Considering this film is now over 20 years old (seriously where does the time go), it is one of those nice and cool cultclassics, that will always be fun to watch. And I also like the fact that this movie doesn’t take itself too seriously either. Now if you will excuse me, I’m off to go find me some bugs to squash. Naw….not really. Unless they are wasps that is…..
I give Starship Troopers a 8 out of 10 score.
This movie. 🤗 No words. Its such a classic for, brilliant movie. Brilliant review. Especially the make-up advice picture feat. Denise Richards, made me laugh out loud 😂

Good review! It’s been a while since I have seen this movie. I heard that the director actually hated the original book and gave it more of a satirical bent even though most American audiences didn’t pick up on the subtlety like the propaganda or the fridge horror of the Federation using teenage soldiers in a brief scene in the final act of the film. It’s not some all time classic, but it was a fun movie.

Thank you 😀 And exactly. A lot of people at the time didn’t get it for it was. There were a lot of subtle things in it, that the director put in there intentionally. The satire was one of those aspects, but so was the use of these actors.
But as you say it was a fun film, and also cool to see again after not having seen it in quite a while. 😊

You’re welcome. I feel like subtlety is a dying art and same with people actually getting it at least where I’m from. I could definitely tell how intentional it was in hindsight. Starship Troopers isn’t my favorite film, but I wouldn’t complain if friends asked me to watch it with them for a movie night.

I’m thinking that I should watch this and then I am thinking that I have seen it but then I get unsure if I really have. My head hurts right now because I can’t figure out if I have seen it or not. It is so familiar. Then again, maybe it was a cartoon I saw? With giant snails. 🤔 🐌

Well….there was also a cartoon for Starship Troopers. So maybe that is what you might have seen. But….maybe you have seen this and the movie. Or maybe only the movie?
This isn’t helping is it? 🤔🤔
I hate this when this happens to me. I look at a review or some scene for a film on YouTube and it is familiar but at the same time it’s not…Ughh…I hate that 😂😂
But….there are snail like creatures in this…so yeah must watch…lol 😂😂🐌

I knew it!!! I was pondering about if it was a cartoon or not but I didn’t dare say it because maybe you would laugh at me. 😳 🙈 It must be that. I am thinking that when I have watched all those anime I bought the other day I might watch ST. Maybe. Unless i buy more anime. Or, maybe, you know, keep watching Black Clover. *quickly hiding behind the sofa*

Seriously though I really would not have. I am a noob when it comes to the new anime…and you don’t laugh at me for that….erm….do you? 🙈🙈
Starship Troopers is…fun…it’s not earthshattering or anything, but still worth a watch 😊
Erm….I plan to continue with Black Clover on Saturday evening ” quickly hides behind the same sofa” 😂😂

Moahaha… I always laugh at you because… ehrm… I laugh at myself. I have as much info about new anime as you have. As I said, I just click and watch, be it new or old I have no idea. It’s like with the manga I read now, I didn’t realise it was written in 1974. It is really really good and no one has ever heard of it. Or the one I bought the other day, La Esperanca, one of my favorites. No one knows about that one because it’s from the 90s. Another of my favorites is also a really old one. I just don’t have a clue about anything. It’s a wonder people read what I write because sometimes it feels like here I come and have found something I love and they be like; oh yeah, we already knew that like five years ago. 🙄 Not that it will stop me from write about it but it feels kind of stupid to be the last one to find something good.
You are welcome in behind my sofa, I got popcorn and a small tv for occasions like these. 😎

I just love the writing too much for that…and still it’s nice to talk about things with other people in the comments section because hey, people still respond anyway. This movie is just kind of awesome fun. There is social commentary and some more serious issues hiding underneath the over-the-top action and poor acting but the whole thing is just entertainment from start to finish. I did try to read the book of this though, and there’s definitely been some major changes when they translated it into film. In the end, the book was interesting but that insane fun feeling was lacking and so it doesn’t quite stick the way the film has.
That said, the sequels to this movie never managed to capture the fun of this film either. They tried but just missed the mark.

I have never seen the sequels. I figured they were insanely bad, so I never quite bothered with them. But maybe I will check them out one day.
The book I have not read yet either, but I definitely heard it’s completely different from the film. As with most books it’s on my list, but I just have to find time for it (translation…I probably will never read it 😊😊).
But you are so right, this was just an over the top fun film with some cheesy stuff in it, but of the good kind. Really great to have been able to rewatch it again after all this time 😊😊

Dude this is like one of my most fave Sci fi movies ever. It had action, satire, a little dash romance, and a whole lot of cool imigary. I could watch it over and over. I agree the performances weren’t standout, but I do think most of the main ones at least had some chemistry with eachother.

It might surprise you to know that I love this film. It was one of the first two films I bought on DVD after getting my first (very expensive!) DVD player. I like the way it is a satire on propaganda, Nazis, colonisation, Westerns, and so much more. The cast play it straight, most are good to look at too, and the ‘film within a film’ government broadcasts are priceless.
But the real stars are the Arachnids. Genuinely terrifying! I watched two sequels. They are not as good of course, but I still enjoyed them.
Such a nice thing to do for Dani, too.
Best wishes, Pete.

I really thought a lot of the commercials in the film were absolutely hilarious. It’s also very cool that this film has so many layers. A fact that apparently went unnoticed at the time this movie came out. Critics were very harsh on it.

I recently found out that in the science fiction novel this was based on, that Johnny Rico was actually written as a Filipino character. Which in response to your comment on his name..makes sense….he’s full name is Juan Rico, but for the movie they changed him to be of Argentinian roots instead of Filipino. And as a Filipino, I had to point that out to you. ❤ Another amazing read from you yet again.

This sounds interesting. This particular genre of humans-triumphing-over-aliens or anything that threatens it’s existence is something I find fascinating. One reason is that o like watching all the humans get together, be a team, work for a common good goal. You don’t see that otherwise. At all other times we always put our differences to the front. Divide amongst ourselves and fight. It’s good for a change to see humans become one for a single cause. That’s why I love these kind of movies. Will definiteky watch this one. Great post Michel!

Hey! Glad to see you again, missed you! 😊 And you are back just in time as well. (Huh? Why, what do you mean I can hear you thinking now…oh…nothing (laughs mysteriously 😊😊😊)
This really was a fun film. The effects were pretty good, and though there was lot of cheesyness in it as well, there was also a lot of fun thing that made the film highly enjoyable. You definitely don’t see humans unite for a common cause in many films (usually it is the other way around).
But thanks so much again…I’m glad you enjoyed the post! 😀

Had a lot of time for this movie when I first saw it as a teenager. I think Denise Richards had a lot to do with that! Still, it was a lot of fun.

Haha, yeah a lot of people (especially boys lol) will probably have watched this one for Denise Richards. But I myself always liked Dina Meyer more 😊😊
But yeah, this was just a fun film, and one that is still terrific even after all these years 😀

I had to find and comment on this review Raistlin. It is because of your review that I stayed up until 1:30 last night watching Starship Trooper on television. I enjoyed it immensely as did my brother who stayed to watch on my word that I’d heard it was a good movie. Thank you for saying Hell Yes, it’s worth seeing, because those words stayed in my mind for almost a whole year and influenced my decision. Excellent way to spend a Monday night! Thanks!

Sorry for getting back to this comment so late 😔 I’m on a kind of hiatus right now because of some health problems, but I am checking in here every once in a while whenever I can 😊
This comment really did make my day though. It always brings a smile to my face when someone reads a post from me, and has joy in watching something that I enjoyed so much myself. So..really, the thanks are all mine, and I am very glad you enjoyed the film so much! 😊😊 It’s definitely a classic and one that I return to every once in a while 😊😊
