Beep, beep, people! Beep, beep! No, I haven’t turned completely insane here by beginning this post in this way. For it has pretty much everything to do with the film that I am about to review. And let me assure you that it’s a scary one at that. This movie is the third request I have had for February’s theme, this one made by Shadowcat99. Now, I think all of you will have a few blogs that you somehow ended up following rather late, and you wonder why you did not discover them any sooner? Shadowcat99’s blog is one of mine. All I can say is don’t make that same mistake as well and go follow her blog right now. Why? Because her posts are awesome! She writes mainly about manga and anime, and her posts are written with great skill and are thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. If you don’t believe me just press the link above and discover her wonderful blog. The 1990 version of It was technically a miniseries, but I allowed it anyway as most people see this as a film. And quite a number of people still fear it…..you see how I did that pun right? Enough talk: let’s get started with the review!
The review
I think nobody can deny the fact that when we were young, we all had our own fears. There might have been simple things like an irrational fear of spiders (or in my case wasps, and no I don’t want to talk about that lol), but it might also be fears that run much deeper. Leave it up to writer Stephen King though, to turn those fears into something truly sinister. It, takes place in the town of Derry where something really awful seems to be happening. Young children are being murdered in horrible ways, but nobody seems to really care about it. Not even the police. All except for one person, and that is the man called Mike Hanlon, who works in Derry as a librarian. Mike has experienced a very traumatic event in his past that is linked to the string of murders that is currently taking place. Thirty years ago a similar spree of killings occurred. But contrary to what you might believe this was no ordinary serial killer that was responsible for these murders. As Mike unfortunately knows all too well. He, and a group of his best friends encountered the being responsible all those years ago. They thought they had dealt with it. They were wrong. With unpleasant memories from the past rising up, Mike begins rounding up his friends to deal with it once and for all. But will they be able to confront their fears, or will the being known as Pennywise have the final laugh……
Last year a remake of It was released in the theatres. It was well received, but many claimed that the new version wasn’t really scary enough. I can not yet say if I agree with that statement as I still have to see the new version. Yes, I know…how terrible of me. However, it was a delight to relive this one though, as it has been many years since I last saw this film. The strength that this movie has, is how well it plays with themes that we can all relate to, combined with some genuinely scary moments. How many of you remember your friends from school? Did you stay in touch with them? Do you even know what they look like these days? That for me was one of the things I loved the most about this film: the fact that real friends, no matter how long they have been seperated from each other, will always stick together. The first half of the film mainly focusses on the past, and through flashbacks we can see how the main characters lives were when they were still children. I loved the fact that each one of them had their own things to deal with. And most of these were not pretty. An abusive father, being bullied at school, stuttering, are just a few examples of how tough their lives were.
But those weaknesses are the things that would ultimately draw these children together. That, and ofcourse their common adversary: the sadistic clown Pennywise. I know there are a lot of people that hate and fear clowns. I am not one of them, but really….if Pennywise were ever to become a rolemodel for the common circus clown we would be in some serious trouble. From the very first moment he makes an appearance you are getting the chills and really you have every right to feel that way. Masterfully played by actor Tim Curry, Pennywise is a force to be reckoned with. He tortures these kids with mindgames and shows them stuff that every sane person would lose their minds over. But it’s the strength of these character’s friendship that ultimately let’s them triumph….well at least for a short while that is. The childactors were very good in their roles. It sometimes surprises me how well some children can act, but at times I also think it’s quite disturbing how they don’t end up getting traumatised by the horrific scenes forced upon them.
It’s the films second act where the movie, or miniseries if you prefer, is losing some of it’s strength. The reunion of the group is heartfelt, and brings that feeling of genuine friendship back. The adult actors unfortunately do not give such strong performances as their child counterparts. Some of them overact a few times, but luckily this doesn’t really go so far that it ruins the experience. The late John Ritter is the one that honestly was the actor that impressed the most, and really had a character that I could relate to a lot. And it was nice to see him win back his childhood love. It’s the movies ending though that really hasn’t aged well. When Pennywise appears in his true form, we get a creature that you almost have to laugh at in the way it looks. Having seen this film quite a while back, I knew there was some type of monster that would make an appearance near the end. But I did not remember that it was made with some really crappy special effects. It’s a shame though, as this really does have an impact on the overall way you feel when the film’s end credits begin to roll.
The 1990 version of It is a film that, having revisited it has left me with some mixed feelings. There are still quite a number of things in it that really work well, especially Pennywise and same genuinely scary scenes. However the weaker second act of the movie, did diminish the much stronger first half of the film. So whether or not you are going to enjoy this movie in the end all depends on the way you feel overall to watching older horror movies. I have always said that sometimes horror is more effective when you are showing less, especially when it comes down to special effects. That said, despite the letdown in the end, this is still quite the effective horrormovie, that is a lot of fun to watch for the most part. And you can add another point to the grade that I gave this film, if you are scared of clowns. That’s it for this review….beep, beep!
I give It a 7 out of 10 score.
I haven’t seen or read it yet. I really want to though because everyone raves about it

Ah…1990 IT. Boy, I loved this mini serie. The kids were definitely the best part of the film. I loved that you mentioned John Ritter, I thought he was brilliant (in this one but also other movies and series). I was so sad when he died…
Hope you get to see the new IT movie soon. Then we’ll get to read another awesome review about that one, just like you managed to do now.😊

Yeah, it was a fun series, and very cool to see it again after a long time (really can’t remember exactly when I last saw this one, but it’s certainly been a while). John Ritter was terrific. A very charismatic actor who died way too young, that’s for sure 😢
Awww shucks. Thanks for the kind words…really appreciate them 😊😊

I think that I appreciate certain parts of this more after seeing the recent one. The for skips for example. Still didn’t scare me though, unfortunately.

I hope to see the new version of this one somewhere this year, but yeah this one had it’s own charms. It’s the effects that are just a bit dated on this one that rob the film of many of it’s scarier moments 😊

I am a huge fan of “IT”. The book was amazing and both movies, the old and new, were great. Both in their own rights captured great things from the book. I look forward to the sequel to the current film.
Those of you who have not read the book. It is truly a great story… A little out there in some ways.

The book has been on that infamous to read list of mine for a couple of years now (infamous because it’s just way too long lol). I quite enjoyed rewatching this version. Even though some of it, is pretty dated now, a lot of things still hold up.
I’m looking forward to seeing the new version somewhere this year 😊

You are ebsolutely spot on when you say horror works better showing less because our own wild imagination creates frightening scenario! I never could watch a horror movie. Or behind the sofa looking through the slits LOL I don’t think I’ll watch this one but it has nothing to do with your review and more with me being a chicken 😉

Haha…well no worries. A good friend of mine is very scared of clowns. So..you are not the only one that would hide behind the sofa while seeing this 😊😊
But yeah true….the best horrormovies for me are the ones that show very little and have that great psychological edge….😱😱

Cool review Michel, Stephen King did so many great books, I didn’t really think this one was one of his best so didn’t do the mini series.

I can not judge on the book as I still have to read it, but I am pretty much convinced it probably isn’t his best. I loved the Stand, Christine, Salem’s Lot and The Shining, great books 😊😊

I forgot it was a mini series! Confession, I have yet to watch this, we almost started it last night at my prompting, but started the Matrix instead, (which I hadn’t seen either a I couldn’t complain too much.) Crossing my fingers I’ll actually watch it today. Needless to say you have me dying to find out about the beep beep beeping.

It originally was a miniseries, but there are so many people that think this is a movie, that it’s really okay 😊
Ooh…the Matrix is very good as well, especially if you had never seen that one.
Well…I hope you will enjoy It too. It’s still great for the most part, it’s just the effects that at times feel a bit silly 😊

I’ve never had much of a problem with silly effects. I’ve watched so many old sci-fi movies I take it in stride. Worst case scenario I’ll laugh, and laughter is always good.

I love Tim Curry. He is such a master of any role he plays. He’s a great good guy, but he’s an unrivaled bad guy. He has that wonderful showmanship of being charming, whimsical, and utterly horrifying, and switching between them effortlessly. I feel like what really made this villain work was how harmless he could seem, and then suddenly he became a monster, in his voice and demeanor.
I also think there’s something powerful with how isolated the characters are. Many times IT attacks, and no one else is around, but as soon as someone else does arrive, IT is gone. And then there are some scenes where IT is present, but no one else can see. To me that’s one of the true horrors, being alone in the world not through the absence of people, but the absence of knowledge and understanding. You have to act “okay”, even though inside you’re screaming or crying, because if others see they will only make things worse for you.
The ending did feel weak to me, but I feel like that’s a classic example of how the audience will always imagine something far better than what reality can make, especially when your monster specializes in shape changing to adopt whatever scares you the most. There’s a reason so many monsters lurk in the shadows. Once they’ve been dragged into the light, much of their power is lost.

This was a great comment 😊😊
Yeah I totally agree. Very few monsters live up to what you imagine them to be and are more effective when they stay in the shadows. (noteworthy exception is Predator…I just think that is still the best movie monster ever created 😊).
But true..there was also a different kind of horror in this film and that’s what most of these kids went trough in their real lives. Abusive parents for instance. But definitely the issolation as well. I know that I have felt like that at times at school.
Tim Curry is definitely one of those actors that can pretty much play any kind of role. No matter where he plays in, he always manages to pull it off. And this role was no exception. I loved the way how he could change his voice on a whim. Truly terrifying indeed 😊😊

Hahaha…. there’s actually a county and a city, called Derry here in Ireland XD
I uses to live 30 minutes from it. So thank glob, I’ve never been brave enough to watch this movie 😀 It would made my creepy little flat, seem like the flat of horror hehe 😀

Haha…well yeah I can imagine that being very, very scary if yiu actually live near a city like that for real lol. I would never pay a visit there anymore that is for sure. But this is one of those films (except for the ending that is) that is better watched with all the lights turned on 😊😊

When they first announced the remake, I was like, wasn’t the original not that old? It’s easy to forget how long ago the 90s were. Didn’t seem like it’s been so long ago.

Oh gosh this does sound sinister. hehee your use of pictures is *strong* though! Yeah it does often surprise me with some child actors- and it’s really good these ones were so good. Such a shame their adult counterparts aren’t as good. And pity about the effects as well and that the second half of the film wasn’t as good hehe I’m not scared of clowns- but I don’t like them and I have a feeling movies like this would help me develop a proper phobia 😉 Great review!

Saw this movie when I was teen. I remember it being scary, but ultimately not leaving much of an impression on me. And since I’m not big into horror, I never had any urge to revisit the movie. I know the newer version received a lot of positive reviews aside from like you said, people wishing it was scarier. Probably won’t check that one out though, lol. Great overall review of the movie 🙂

It was fun to rewatch this one I do have to admit that. But I will also admit that I don’t think I’m going to be seeing this one again. Some things withstood the test of time quite well, but a couple of things quite frankly didn’t. 😊
As for the newer version…I will definitely watch but I will probably do that in a couple of months from now (somewhere in October or November). This one is now a little bit too fresh in my mind 😊😊
Thanks as always for the kind comment 😊😊

AWESOME review Michel! I have to admit, I do harbor nostalgic feelings toward this, and Tim Curry in particular, but the 2017 movie is much tighter and more in keeping with the book. And I thought is was extremely scary, more than the miniseries anyway.😱

Thanks so much Kim. I definitely plan on seeing the remake later this year, but as this one is now pretty fresh in my mind I will probably not see it before October. But I am looking forward to it. This one is just fun because of the nostalgia. While some parts still work…there also things that don’t (especilally the special effects). But that said…Tim Curry was awesome. Thanks for the kind words as always 😊😊

Brilliant review, Michel! I’m keeping this movie “unseen” till I’ve read the book, but I did see the new adaptation and absolutely loved it. The movie isn’t about scaring you with the clown and having you leave the theaters all fidgety, it plays more on the theme of fear and with those amazing kid actors delivered such an awesome movie. Hope you’ll enjoy it when you get around to it! 😀

Beep Beep Richie! Played by Oz from Buffy, as I recall. I remember the first time I saw It, the first time it aired in the UK (circa 1992). I was in my second year at high school, and it was on over the weekend I went to York with my school. I saw an advert for it before going, and having recently watched various Nightmare on Elm street movies, I connected with it right away. I was even more intrigued when I discovered it was not Nightmare on Elm treet despite my initial thoughts. That just made me want to see it more so I had my mum record it for me to watch on my return. The second half is weaker, as you say, but I still love it. I have also seen the remake. It was good. It had more gore. That didn’t make it better. I think I prefer the original, but I won’t be able to definitively say that until the remake of the second part happens. Great post

You have a good memory, as you are right it is Oz from Buffy that plays that part.
I will be seeing the remake later this year, as right now this one is very fresh in my mind.
This one though was still a lot of fun, despite some of the flaws mentioned. These days a lot of horror movies seem to think that by adding gore it somehow becomes more scary. Well..newsflash…it doesn’t’.
