With the movie the Return of the Jedi that was released in 1983, the first Star Wars trilogy was finished. And many people at the time thought that would be the end of things. The popularity of the franchise started to wane, and slowly but surely people began to lose interest. But then nine years later Star Wars got noticed again, this time not because of a new movie, but by a novel written by Timothy Zahn called Heir to the Empire. It would be the first of a new trilogy of books that chronicled events that took place after Return of the Jedi. It became a huge succes. Not only was it an amazing story, but it also introduced a couple of new characters that became fan favorites, even though they had never been seen before in a movie. The most notorious of these was Grand Admiral Thrawn. The blue skinned alien Chiss, was a military genius that almost brought the New Republic to it’s knees. After this first trilogy a huge range of novels were made that took the story even further. This became known as the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
This was all before the Dark Times…before the Empi…erm, Disney. When they took over Lucasfilm, and revealed plans to make a new trilogy of movies taking place after Episode VI, something had to be done about the Expanded Universe. And something was done to it: it was declared non-canon. In other words all the characters, worlds and events created within those books were no longer part of the official Star Wars timeline. A lot of fans, including me, were not very happy with that. But two years ago, something happened that brought a smile to the faces of many people that loved those books: Thrawn was brought back. This time he was reintroduced as a new adversary in the Star Wars cartoonseries Rebels. And just like that Thrawn was canon again. Last year the original creator of Thrawn, writer Timothy Zahn, wrote a new book about the legendary character. It was, needless to say, highly anticipated. But as with most things that you look forward to, it very rarely lives up to all the things you expect.
This novel explores the origin of Thrawn and tells the tale of his quick rise to power through the ranks of the Empire. Thrawn is first found as a young man, seemingly abandoned by his people. An Imperial team is impressed by his cunning and tactical genius, and decide to give him a chance to prove himself. Thrawn takes on the young ensign Eli Vanto as a translator and together with him, begins his training. But a lot of high ranked people don’t take kindly to having an alien in their ranks and would like to see him fail. Meanwhile on the planet Lothal a ruthless administrator called Arihnda Pryce is also making plans to expand her power. Eventually the two will cross paths. Where Thrawn is skilled in military tactics, Pryce is more than his match on the battlefield of politics. But when threats against the still unstable Empire begin to appear all over the galaxy, Thrawn faces a new adversary that might become his downfall. Especially when this opponent seems to be two steps ahead of him at every turn…..
Thrawn became a very different novel than I expected it to be. I had hoped for a very tense and exciting book, with an interesting origin story of the Grand Admiral. In part it delivers this, but the other part was well, quite frankly a bit boring. We get a story that focusses a lot on internal politics. As I am not a huge fan of politics in the first place, I felt that these chapters slowed the story down to a crawl. We also get a lot of secondary characters thrown into the mix, that just get introduced but then, at least most of them, don’t really do anything. But what of Thrawn himself? The character that many loved so much in the brilliant original trilogy of books that introduced him feels…different. It’s still Thrawn, that can’t be denied, but at the same time it’s not. Of course Zahn had to reinvent the character and as such has had to make some changes. But still, this is not the same Thrawn that was such an amazing villain. And that is the part that disappointed me the most.
Still, it is not a bad novel. There is small cameo appearance of a major character that will have most Star Wars fans whopping with joy. I also really liked the backstory of Arihnda Pryce who was at times even more cunning then Thrawn. Whether or not you will like this novel depends on a few things. If you like your Star Wars books to be full of action, big space battles and lots of tension, then I don’t think this is a novel you would enjoy. There are a few scenes like that, but mostly we get a book that focusses more on backstabbing officials and internal politics. As mentioned Thrawn is also not quite the character you are used to, but there are still flashes of his original brilliance throughout the book. Maybe the sequel to this novel, Thrawn: Alliances, that will be published this year, more of those flashes will make an appearance. All in all, Thrawn is an okay novel if you don’t expect too much from it.
I give Thrawn a 7 out of 10 score.
I enjoyed this novel, though I can’t disagree with your feelings of Meh towards it. For me, Thrawn was always mysterious and impenetrable. And he still sort of is, but its hard to see him that way when he is driving a console on an Imperial Light Carrier. Timothy Zahn is a good author (of star wars books, his Conquerers series, whilst interesting, relied too heavily coincidence) and I will read the sequel that is due out this year. But it is no Heir to the Empire and I doubt the sequel will compare to Dark Force Rising.
I bet I was angrier than you at the decanon cannon that Disney used…

The thing I thought that bothered me a bit was the way that he was almost benovelent here. He was pretty ruthless and dangerous in the original novels…here though at points he was even kind.
But that said..we are talking about his beginnings, so maybe in the sequel things will change. And of course…I will be reading it as well😊
Lol…well…maybe, I was very, very angry though (not The Force Awakens kind of angry, but still….) Especially at the fact they removed my alltime favorite expanded universe character Mara Jade 😢😢

Yeah. He did seem kinder in this one but he never came across as cruel in the others either. And with the hand of thrawn books and the outbound flight stuff you can almost see his ruthlessness as a means to an end (protecting the galaxy from extra galactic threats)

Yeah true. I think maybe that the sequel will hopefully show more of his previous cunning. Maybe something will happen that will shake up his personality or something like that. Hopefully it will be a better read…not that this was superbad, but just expected a bit more from it 😊😊

Hehe… Thrawn reminds me of the aliens in avatar. 😀
Sounds like an interesting read 🙂 I love novels like this, that give you the origins/background of a character. They’re usually really enjoyable and make for a good read 🙂

Haha….well….the aliens in Avatar are much friendlier, I can tell you that lol 😂😂
But it was okay…I really had higher expectations of itto be honest, but it certainly wasn’t bad either. And true origin stories are really fun, especially when done well 😊😊

Star Wars? Never heard of… 😉
I’m not the Star Wars lover but it’squite interesting how big influence some movies can have. Of course there is not only SW but I think it’s a great example how to turn a movie into money making machine. What is not about SW? I’m not sure but what is about it?
movies – checked
games – checked
books – checked
toys – checked
clothes – checked
I bet this is not the end of the list. George Lucas seem to be a genius to create not tv series but cinema series and kept interested of people for so many years.

I’m a big Star Wars fan, all my life I have been one, and it really is very cool how George Lucas has managed to creat such a profitable franchise.
Thank you for your comment 😊😊

There are generations raised on Star Wars and it has permeated into the culture, no matter that someone is fan of SW or not. This is why it gain “cult” status. 🙂

Fantastic Book Review, Michel! To be honest, I think Disney came along and fucked all kinds of shit. They were like “fuck the books, most people watch films and tv anyways.” I hate this! You know I seriously had a friend ask me “Why do you read if you’re not in prison?” It seems they didn’t care about the characters or the books and said a big ‘fuck you’ because they were not worried about it.

Aww, thank you sweet Dani 😘😘❤️❤️ Yeah, that about sums it up I guess. Honestly? The books were much better than the movies that Disney made so far. I think they pretty much are caring about one thing: make enough money, and who cares about what the fans think. It’s sad.
Wow, really? Someone asked you that? Anyone who doesn’t read misses out on one of the best experiences life has to offer. But that’s just me 😊😊 Thank you so much again Dani : you’re the best 😘❤️

I don’t remember writing this, sweetheart but Fantastic Review! I do believe people just worry about making money. Sorry about that randomness! Sending you lots of LOVE! 😘💖 I LOVED reading your review and will have to take note of this one but I feel you when people just release the books without putting much effort in the character’s lives! I think a lot has changed since Disney all together and I heard today that one of my favorites was killed in the latest movie!😨😨😨 If so, I am super mad! Lol. Now I am rambling and sorry about the random fucks earlier. One of my others like you.😵

Hey….you never have to say sorry to me sweety 😘❤️ Thank you for yet another wonderful and beautiful comment. You always make me smile 😊😊
But true…I’m not really sure about how I feel since Disney took over. Not everything they have done is bad, that’s taking things too far. But still…there are also a lot of things I don’t agree with. And one thing you never do sweet Dani, is rambling. So please no worries about anything okay? Sending you lots of LOVE back 😘😘❤️❤️

Another lukewarm Star Wars review. Disney will have to work extra hard to win you back. Based on the movies I have seen I don’t think I would enjoy this book. I prefer Stars Wars when it is action packed rather than focusing on politics. On the plus side it’s good to see that the expanded universe characters have not been completely abandoned.

Haha…well, strangely enough they still have me lol 😂😂 But yeah this book was a bit disappointing. Really, you would do better of with reading the original trilogy of books he wrote. Those were absolutely amazing reads. But…that said, this wasn’t a bad novel either. Just expected more from it 😀

Very interesting backstory. I had no idea that Thrawn was made canon again! That’s very good to know. It would be nice if some other events were too, but that seems unlikely at this stage.
I haven’t dabbled in the EU much, mostly because I don’t have a lot of time to read books these days, but perhaps I should check some of these novels out.
Excellent review! Will you be doing more of these SW novels? 😀

I’m very glad that Thrawn is canon again. I only hope that they will some day to the same to Mara Jade as well, as she was such an amazing character 😊
And I agree, there were a couple of amazing things in the EU that really should return in some form or another. Oh well, who knows, maybe that will happen at some point in the future 😊
If you want to read a good Star Wars novel in the new canon series I recommend Lords of the Sith. It’s a fun book where Vader and the Emperor crash land together on a planet.
Thank you! I will probably do a few more Star Wars novel reviews this year, including hopefully the sequel to this one 😊😊

I’m not a huge fan of when books get too focused on politics either, it tends to really slow the plot down and sidetrack it from the action.
Good review!!

Yeah…I’m not a fan of politics in real life, let alone in books 😂😂 But yeah, while this book wasn’t a total miss luckily, it did really drag in some parts, which was a real shame. But oh well, can’t win them all I guess 😊😊

And yes there are books, a lot of them (more than hundreds in fact 😊). This certainly isn’t the best one to start with though, that is for sure. If you are interested I can give you a few recommendations 😀

Haha okay: here they come . From the new canon series I would recommend: Lords of the Sith by Paul S. Kemp. Really great story, with loads of action abd best of all it features Vader and the Emperor.
Death Trooper by Joe Schreiber (though not officially canon anymore) is a really unusual Star Wars novel :it’s horror meets the Star Wars universe.
Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn (also not officially canon anymore) is a fun novel as it’s kind of Ocean’s Eleven in the Star Wars universe
I, Jedi by Michael A. Stackpole. Also not officially canon, but still one of the best Star Wars moves out there. Hope these help…and I have plenty more where these came from 😊😊

I’ve never read these books but they sound so good (especially interested in the fan faves) hehehehe “before the Empi…erm, Disney”- LOL! I don’t know why they had to declare all this non-canon, especially since it predates it. It’s a pity this didn’t feel quite like the character you’d grown to love. Still sounds good though. Fantastic review!

Yeah it’s a real shame. I can understand Disney wanting to make changes, but they could have done some other things in order to at least keep a few things still canon(especially a few of the fan favorite things).
Oh well…there are definitely some great Star Wars novels that are highly worth checking out. If you need some recommendations let me know 😊

*holds up hands* I know nothing of Star Wars! oopsie.. I never got into it, I watched one of the latest movies (which some fans of SW tell me wasn’t the best)… I haven’t followed the franchise at all BUT I have to say this post was interesting reading and educational, too.. I know more about Star wars now than I did 5 minutes ago! Thanks! 🙂

Haha…well no worries. I know that I haven’t seen quite a number of classic movies myself either. So no worries about that. Star Wars is for me a franchise that I have loved for quite a long time in my life. It’s pretty much a part of me I guess you could say.
Thanks for the kind words about this post, I’m glad you enjoyed the read and that it was educational 😊😊

Timothy Zahn was probably my first love when I discovered the Star Wars expanded universe back in my geeky younger days, but my 2 loves will always be “Children of the Jedi” by Barbara Hambly and “The Courtship of Princess Leia” by Dan Wolverton.

I haven’t read the first book you mentioned, but the second one I really enjoyed as well. The new “canon” novels are nice reads, but I have to say that the old expanded universe books were much more enjoyable if I am being honest.😊

Sorry to hear about those politics that kicked in and bored you later in the book. But man this Thrawn guy has always piqued my curiosity since I first heard him. I still need to read those books by Timothy Zahn. I’ve heard lots of praise for it too. Great and honest review man! What’s the next Star Wars book you plan on trying? 😀 I feel like there are a lot of new ones to try out nowadays.

Thrawn is terrific. But I highly suggest starting with the original trilogy of books. Even though those are not considered canon anymore, it’s where Thrawn was first introduced and I think that to date these were the best Star Wars novels that were ever written.
The next one on my list is Catalyst by James Luceno, which is a prequel to the Rogue One film.
As always thank you for the kind words and your comment 😊😊
