Okay, this might actually be very hard for you to believe but before March of this year I did not own a mobile phone. At least not one that could be called a smartphone. No, I had one of those phones that people used in the past to make phonecalls with. You know the thing that cellphones were originally meant for. These days smartphones seem to have evolved into mobile computers and are used for so many things that I can’t even keep track of it all. Or maybe I’m just getting old. Anyways, the things that people really seem to enjoy on them is the offering of mobile games. And the selection is getting better and better. There seems to be a game for everyone and the graphics almost look as good as though you were a playing a game on a console. But there is also a darker side to it. And that darker side comes in the form of deathgames. Wait…nope sorry, that’s just in this anime. But, I do think after seeing this you will think quite differently about sending someone a text.
Nobuaki Kanazawa is a highschool student that has just transferred to his new school. When he gets introduced to his new classmates he tries to avoid them as much as he can. Even though a few of them try their best to make friends with him, he just won’t let them in. Naturally people are beginning to speculate as to what the reasons for this strange behaviour might be. But that reason soon becomes apparent as everyone in class get’s a strange text sent to their cellphones. The message says that they are now participating in the King’s Game and that they are not allowed to withdraw. It is concluded with an order that two of Nobuaki’s classmates are to kiss each other, and if they don’t they will get punished. At first they all think it’s a prank devised by Kanazawa. But as time passes by and classmates are beginning to lose their lives, the true horror is beginning to become clear. Nobuaki is the soul survivor of a previous King’s Game and now history is about to repeat itself in his new class. With tensions running high because of increasingly more extreme orders, and people that are beginning to turn on each other in order to survive, the question soon becomes who will be the next victim of this deathgame…..
King’s Game is a mess of a show. But at the same time I quite liked it. You know those horrormovies like for instance Sharknado that are so bad that they actually become fun? You can definitely add this one to that list. That’s not to say that there aren’t things that are going to annoy you though. In the beginning of the series we spent a lot of episodes in the past with the outcome of Nobuaki’s previous King’s Game. That’s all fine, but in the meantime the story in the present takes a backseat and doesn’t really go anywhere. The same goes for the enormous cast of characters that this series contains. As we spent so much time in the past and get introduced to characters there as well, you tend to forget the names of the people we are supposed to care about in the current King’s Game. I really had some trouble indentifying a few of them. Later on though, the show does pick up speed and focusses on the events that matter, and becomes better for it.
If you are not a fan of plotholes or illogical events, I would say skip this one. For King’s Game is full of them. To give you a small example: at one point a girl is burning up, and she keeps on talking slowly as if nothing is happening, not even screaming once. Now, I can look past certain things, but at times this show really makes you wonder who came up with this script. Because of the enormously large cast, most of the characters are highly underdeveloped. The star of the series, Nobuaki Kanazawa, is your basic hero type of character that is trying to do good in every way he can. He is certainly not a character you will hate, but he’s also not someone you haven’t seen in other forms in countless other animes. His biggest opponent in the game who shall remain nameless in order to avoid spoilers, is a person you are definitely going to hate. But in a good way. To call this character the devil made flesh is probably the best description. Deliciously evil and manipulative you seriously want this person to fail, but at the same time get out on top as well. All of these are the marks of a great villain.
So why should you be watching this? Well, it’s actually kind of hard to explain. I watched this one along with Karandi’s (Who probably needs no introduction for most of you, but if you are not following her yet go press on the link and do so now please), weekly posts for the show, but she also had at times trouble to explain what there is to like. But I can honestly say it’s definitely great horror. The death’s are at times truly horrifyingly gruesome and inventive. The story, even though it has numerous plotholes, is still quite entertaining. And as with any game you do want to see who eventually is going to win. This is by no means a good show, I’m not going to lie to you about that. But if you are a fan of lowbudget horrormovies, and take some of the shows plotholes and events for granted, I can pretty much guarantee you are going to be entertained by this one. I have been weighing things of in my mind all day as to what grade I was going to give this. In the end I decided to give it a reasonably decent one, as I had fun watching this, no doubt about it.
I give King’s Game a 7 out of 10 score.
So…. not too great?
P.S- Not quite a shock because I still don’t have a phone, something every other teen I meet finds horrifying XD

It’s really hard to explain. The show is awful but at the same time you can’t stop watching it.

That really sums it up so well. Could not agree with you more on that 😀

I legitimately thought it had a good ending though, despite the sequel tease. It had internal consistency for the end and it was what it needed to be. Weirdly satisfying I guess. Great write up 🙂 I have mine going live tomorrow, tried something different. Hope you enjoy my full thoughts there 😀

Yes, I said as much to Karandi over on her blog. The ending was fun and at least gave us closure (which is something that a lot of anime fail to do these days). As for the sequel tease….I actually hope it will get a sequel 😂😂
Okay: that sounds seriously cool. Looking forward to that post, will keep my eyes out for it 😀

I would 100% watch a sequel to this. I actually think it would be pretty good because a lot of the problem’s King’s Game had just needed minor writing and direction tweaks. The pieces are all there, they were just assembled into the wrong picture so to speak.

I definitely know what you mean. I actually liked enjoyed this one enough to maybe even check out the manga at some point. Even though I hardly read those.
If the second season assembled the pieces better, we might have a very entertaining anime in the making. Keeping my fingers crossed for it 😀

Have to agree. Objectively the show is terrible and yet it was fun and I’d totally go for a sequel, a spin-off or even a random reimagining. Besides this was fun to talk with people about during the season in the way only bad horror can be.

Haha, could not agree more. That’s why I said that next year I want to try and follow more seasonal anime. It’s the best thing about it, sharing thoughts on it with everyone 😀
But this was really a fun watch, despite the awfulness of it lol. I will keep my eyes out for any news of a sequel 😀😀

Haha, well: that’s how it was for me as well. In fact I have even had people getting mad at me, because they would not believe me when I told them I did not have a smartphone 😂 (no joke😮).
But as for this series Jon sums it up really well 😀

Ooh I may have to give this show another shot, like you said it’s the Sharknado of anime – I probably went into thinking it would be like Erased. Glad to see that there’s a solid victim at the end cause the first manga (avoiding spoilers)…doesn’t quite end so solidly.

Haha, yeah I thought it would be the best way to describe it lol 😂
Hmm…..well, it ends well….but maybe not in the way you might think 😀(Also avoiding spoilers here). I’m going to see next year if I can read the manga at some point. Looking forward to it 😀

I love bad horror hehe It’s so much fun and very entertaining, in a comical kind of way 😀 I’ve never watched bad anime horror though. 🙂
The idea of a killer game sounds fun (to watch in an anime, I mean. Playing it would be terrifying) and I’m also extremely curious about how a mobile game kills, so think I’ll give this one a try. If only to satisfy my curiosity hehe 😀

Haha, well as long as you don’t expect to much from it (really set your expectations to the lowest point possible lol), I think you will enjoy this one. It has a lot of incredibly stupid things in it, but for some weird reason you just keep watching anyway. When it comes to bad anime horror it doesn’t get better than this lol 😂😂
Hope you will enjoy it, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it 😊

Hehe, I’ll set my expectations so low, that they’ll be basically non-existent lol 😀
Thanks, it sure does sound like an entertaining bad horror. Looking forward to watching it 😀

King’s Game is nothing compares to lack of smartphone…
and I’m still using regular mobile phone. It’s probably mean I’m old… 😉

Haha, well no worries. I have a smartphone but half of the time I can’t even get it to work properly anyway. I think you are better of with a regular mobile phone 😊

There are three things I like about mobile phones
1. You can make a phone call
2. You can send a text message
3. You can use reminder
and this is absolutely enough for me:)

Lol, that’s certainly the 3 most important things 😊

I love a good so-bad-it’s-good story.
I mainly use my smartphone the way it was meant to be used: buy cheap stuff.
… What do you mean it’s supposed to be used for communication? Talking? Text? Pfffht! It’s for deals!

Haha, yeah crazy isn’t it people that use it for such things? That’s so old school 😂😂
But yeah this anime certainly falls into the category it’s bad..really bad…but you still enjoy it anyway for some reason 😊

Great write up and hilarious screenshots. Mobile phones sound dangerous. Good thing that I don’t have one.
I might check this show out. You make it sound better than the other reviews I have read, which are mostly negative. Death games can be fun. In the past I have liked Gantz and Future Diary.

Haha: well I have one but most of the time I can’t even get it to work properly (like writing a comment to your post lol 😂).
Well this series certainly isn’t great I won’t lie to you there, but it definitely had it’s moment and was just pure dumb fun at times.
Thanks for the kind words: glad you liked the review. If you do check it out I will look forward to hearing your thoughts for it 😀

Hahaha I can see why this would be entertaining, being so bad it’s good. Considering I’ve watched Sharknado and couldn’t stop laughing or turning off the TV, and considering one of my favorite movies is the best worst movie of all time – The Room – I would not be able to disagree with you here 😂😂😂
I’m not into horror, as you know, but it does sound like a complete mess of a show, so bad it’s good, and I wouldn’t mind trying it out just to see what it’s like. Especially after such a nice review from you! I mean, 7 out of 10 is a lot… I’m definitely curious now 😂
Amazing post and, as always, epic pics/captions 😛

Well…if you liked Sharknado…you might really enjoy the badness of this. There isn’t much humor in it, but you will definitely laugh at how bad this sometimes gets lol 😂😂
Thank you for always writing such awesome comments. They always mean a lot, so really thank you 😊😊
Hope if you get to check this out one day, you will enjoy it 😀😀

hehehe your opening was so funny!! (I can actually really relate to being late on the smartphone train 😉 ) This does sound fun even if it is a bit messy in the way its made, with plotholes and such. hehe some people do take being hot to the extreme 😉 Awesome review!!

Haha thank you very much I’m glad you liked it and it made you laugh 😊 This was definitely a mess, but a good mess if that makes any sense. It’s just one of those weird things that can’t be explained 😀 Thanks again for the kind words appreciate it 😊

Aww, thank you so much. You always know how to make me blush 😊😊 Haha, this was a very conflicting review as this really is a series that does that 😀😀 One part of me really hated it, one part really loved it. Seriously weird but ultimately fun show. Thanks so much for being every bit as amazing 😚😚

This sounds absolutely insane hahahah The plotholes might indeed irritate me, but if the show is able to make me overlook it, then this sure does sound like a lot of fun! Oh, and that pepperoni pizza face is priceless! 😛 I’m a bit amazed that you didn’t have a smartphone much earlier too! Although I think by now a lot of people have a similar path in life regarding them smartphones. 😉 Wonderful review, Michel!

Thank you 😊😊
Ha ha trust me, this one is seriously insane. It’s like one of those B-grade type horrorfilms which you know you should not like, but silently do anyway lol. Plotholes aside (some of them are as crazy as the series itself), it’s stil pretty entertaining (in a disturbed kind of way 😂).
Yeah, and the funny thing is, even though I have a smartphone now, I still hardly use it. It’s convenient for checking out my blog and other blogs at work though (even though I know I should really be working 😂😂).
