Remember the 80’s? I’ve mentioned it quite a few times in the past that I am a fan of that particular era. It is famous for bringing us some great cartoons, wonderful and very memorable movies, but it also saw the rise of a completely new form of entertainment: the video game. People back in those days went to the arcades to play classic games such as Pac Man, Space Invaders and Centipede to name but a few examples. In the year 1982 Disney made a film that focussed on computergames in a way that had not yet been done before. Featuring groundbreaking special effects the name of that movie was Tron. It became a moderate succes back in those days, but it is now recognised by many as being lightyears ahead of it’s time and has gained the status of cult classic. Almost 30 years later a sequel was made to the original film. It was anticipated by a lot of people but unfortunately it did not become as succesful as many had hoped. Welcome everybody to part 3 of Countdown to the Last Jedi.
In Tron Legacy we are introduced to the son of Kevin Flynn, a young boy called Sam. In the year 1989 his father disappeared without a trace just after he was promoted to CEO of the computer systems corporation Encom International. Ever since his disappearance, now over twenty years ago, nobody has heard anything from him. Sam has grown up, but has little to no interest in his father’s company, despite being the primary shareholder. He does like to play a prank on the board of directors every year. Kevin’s closest and oldest friend Alan Bradley one day checks in with Sam, but not without a reason. It seems that Alan has recieved a pager message that originated from Kevin’s old, but now sealed video arcade. At first Sam is very skeptical, but eventually he decides to investigate it anyway. Arriving at the arcade, he discovers a hidden basement, where he inadvertently gets transported to The Grid. This virtual reality world was created by his father, and it seems that something very sinister has been brewing there. A rogue and corrupt program called Clu and that closely resembles his father, has taken control of everything. But Clu has bigger plans than the virtual world….plans that threaten the real world and every living thing in it. Sam becomes the reluctant hero that has to save the world. But stranded in an unfamiliair place, will he be up to this task?
Tron Legacy can be only by described as a visual masterpiece. It is a feast for your eyes in many ways. The virtual world of The Grid is created in an absolutely breathtaking way. The buildings, the vehicles, the world, all of them are simply put works of art. It is one of the most beautiful fantasy worlds that I have ever seen created for a movie. I unfortunately missed the opportunity to see this one on the big screen, something that I regret to this day. But not only the visual aspect of this film is worth mentioning. It is also the film’s soundtrack, created by Daft Punk that brings this movie to life. Heavy synthesizer sounds combined with some orchestral score create a truly unique sound, and one that fits this movie perfectly. I highly recommend listening to this one with a headset on, as it will give you the best experience. But for all it’s visual might and powerful sounds, this movie is not without it’s faults unfortunately.
One of the least interesting aspects of the film are it’s characters. Sam, played by Garett Hedlund is a rather boring guy. He tends to overact in certain scenes and just doesn’t really convince you as the hero. Olivia Wilde, in the role of Quorra is one of the key characters of the movie. An apprentice created by Sam’s father, Olivia’s role is decent, but ultimately also underused. Most of the film she spents her time fighting along Sam, but has just too few lines to really make an impact as a character. Luckily the film is saved by the solid performance of Jeff Bridges, who reprises his role as Kevin, but also plays a younger version of himself as the evil Clu. Now the younger version of Bridges is created mostly through the heavy usage of CGI effects, and is not really done in the best way I’m sorry to say. Still it get’s the job done, and both roles by Bridges are without a doubt the best parts of the movie. It was also fun to see Bruce Boxleitner, who played Tron in the original movie, return for a small cameo performance.
And then there is the storyline. At times it is quite hard to follow, and there are a few parts of it that just don’t always add up. But honestly the same can be said of the original film. Tron Legacy is one of those movies that will not be appreciated by everyone. Even though it boasts some astonishing special effects and an incredible music score, it’s the story that will not sit well with most people. I for one though, really enjoyed the film. Yes it definitely has it’s flaws, I’m not going to deny that, but there was enough in the movie that made it a solid science fiction adventure. I’m going to leave you with a clip that showcases one of the best scenes from the film: the light cycle sequence. Worthy of mention is also the song by Daft Punk that accompanies this scene and that makes the it even more powerful. Next up for the countdown to the Last Jedi feature is Serenity. I hope you all enjoyed reading this post. End of line.
I give Tron Legacy a 8 out of 10 score.
Is this the bestest movie ever, no… bestest music video however.. I think it is. lol I would recommend it on the soundtrack alone.

Haha, it certainly isn’t the bestest movie ever. But wow…that soundtrack is so incredible. Could not agree with you more 😀

I do think the aesthetic ambition of both visuals and sound were the saving grace of the film. I just loved the world so much that I remember that more from my experience in the theater than the actual story revolving around the characters (or even the names of the characters). I feel like if they were to remake Tron to some degree we could have a great sci-fi blockbuster with one of the better visual representations of this world trapped in computer. And of course have Daft Punk come back to make the soundtrack of course.

Definitely agree with you. This is a typical example of a movie that is highly worth watching for both the visual aspects as well as the soundtrack. There has been talk of a new Tron for a very long time now, but I seriously doubt it’s going to happen. Seeing that this film just really did not do so well at the boxoffice, I don’t think a studio wil invest money in it only to lose it again. Real shame as I for one would have loved to spent more time in this world.

At the risk of sounding like a magpie, ooh shiny 😮 . It really does look like a visual masterpiece. If my eyes feasted on this film, I’d fear they’d get fat hehe 😀
Great review, as always 🙂 I would also like one of those bikes for Christmas. It would be so cool, driving at night 😀

Haha: shiny indeed lol 😂😂 But you are right, visually this film is absolutely amazing and one of the main reason to watch it. That, abd the incredible score. But oh yeah, how I would love to own a bike like that: it is awesome. Not sure if the police would agree though 😂😂
Thanks for the kind words as always 😀

This was a little disappointing, though as you said it isn’t like the original movie isn’t without its flaws. I just kind of hoped when the revised the idea of Tron they were going for more than visual spectacle and mostly they didn’t really succeed. Still, it isn’t bad and the two movies together are a good double feature.
Looking forward to Serenity. Love that movie.

Awesome review! And as you said, the original film also had its flaws, the characters also weren’t particularly interesting….
This is my fav part of the score…
P. S. But you didn’t mention TRON 2.0, the game, which for a while was considered an official sequel to the original film…it even featured some people that worked on the 1982 movie plus Syd Mead’s designs! 😥🤣

Thank you as always for your awesome reply and kind words. It means a lot 😀
Definitely agree, the original also had it’s own set of flaws, that is for sure. But both films are enjoyable enough, and for this one the visual aspects and the score are enough to make it a very worthwhile watch.
I love that part of the score a lot as well. It’a terrific. My favorite part is the one that I just included and was part of the lightcycle scene. Awesome stuff.
Yeah, I know 😅 The review was already quite long, and I always try to not go overboard and make it too long 😅 But you are right, I should have mentioned it…sorry about that 😢

Yeah, it really could have been a better film. I rewatched it today, and felt that the story and characters were just not like I remembered it originally. I think the first time I watched it I was very overwhelmed by the visual aspects. But still, it definitely wasn’t a bad movie and certainly a worthy watch 😀
As for Serenity: looking forward to that one as well. I love it too, and it has been quite a while since I last saw it 😀

I enjoyed this movie enough. It’s not even close to fantastic but it was a fun way to kill some time when I watched it.

That was pretty much the same for me as well. It certainly wasn’t a true classic, but it was definitely enjoyable enough and the visual spectacle on offer is pretty much enough to make it a worthwhile watch 😀

I know Sean made me watch this, as he has done for virtually any movie in this category. I love Jeff Bridges but I don’t think I found my way into this. Had never seen the original.

Yeah, I can really understand that. This is certainly not a film for everyone (and the original wasn’t either). It’s visual splendour doesn’t hide the fact that it’s storyline is not one of the easiest to follow along with. That said, Jeff Bridges (nearly) always delivers 😊

I have to admit that I skipped on the hype wave for this one back in 2010. Even after 2010 I never got myself to try it out because of peepz saying how bad the story was. However, you did revitalize some desire in me to see it just for the visuals and the score. I mean… I torture myself to watch Michael Bay’s Transformers movies because I really like the visuals. However, I know how much of an atrocity they are story-wise… and explosion-wise..! 😀 Excellent review as always, sir. Keep ’em coming. 🙂

Well, trust me on this, this is way better than anything Michael Bay has made. There is definitely a better story in here, and this certainly isn’t an explosion fest 😀 I do have to admit that I like the Transformers movies though, just for what they are 😊
Tron Legacy isn’t perfect but it is worth seeing at least once.
Thanks again for your kind comment, I appreciate it 😊 I will try to keep the reviews coming 😀

I don’t think those Light Cycles are street legal. Just imagine all the traffic you would destroy every time you make a turn.

Haha, yeah it would definitely not be a good thing to go and ride these ones out on the highway lol 😂😂Then again, it would do wonders for cleaning up traffic jams 😂😂

I believe it was more successful than BR2049 but it suffered the same fate regards launching more movies- although there are occasional rumours of further efforts, so you never know, given time I wouldn’t rule out a BR2059 eventually.
It is so curious though, both originals were groundbreaking and both sequels leaped forward decades in their fictional world’s and both expanded the original stories with respect to those originals. Neither were cheap cynical reboots. BR2049 is clearly on a different level though, as Legacy has plenty of faults that should have been addressed at the script-stage.
Whatever next, though? A sequel to The Thing set 40 years later when someone finds Macready s frozen corpse (and he unthaws to reveal yes he’s the Thing)?

Yeah, it was a bit more succesful than BR2049, but it certainly did not come even close to that masterpiece. I really enjoyed it nonetheless, but more from a visual point of view than with any regards to the story.
BR2049 was for me not only visually a masterpiece but also in terms of it’s storyline. I seriously hope one day a new film will be made for that one.
As for what’s next, I would not mind a sequel to The Thing at all, if it respects the source material, that would really be awesome 😀

I was a fan of the original and ended up really enjoying this sequel. Loved the effects, concept, and music. Even really liked the younger CGI Jeff Bridges. Of course, it could have been better, but it succeeded in re-creating that world and bringing back a lot of great nostalgia 🙂

I could not agree more. Despite it’s flaws, it certainly managed to create a lot of nostalgic feelings for me as well. It was interesting to see a lot of the old vehicles and stuff like that in a new light. And then of course very cool to see both Bridges and Boxleitner reprise their respective roles 😀

Those visuals really do seem very modern! Impressive for something made in the 80s! I really do love the look of these visuals 😀 And hehe I’d like one of those bikes too 😉 It’s a shame the characters are a bit boring, but it sounds like a lot of other things more than make up for it! 😀 Awesome review!

Well, I can explain that: these aren’t the visuals from the original movie of the 80’s but from the sequel that was made in 2010 lol😂
Yeah, this movie was definitely a worthy follow up to the original. Despite it’s many flaws it is a worthy watch for sure 😊
Thank you for the kind words, appreciate it 😀
