I’m beginning to have a small luxury problem. And I’m sure I’m definitely not the only one that has this particular problem. Ever since I started my blog, now more than a year ago, my love for anime has resurfaced. Shock of all shocks, it might even surprise you that before that, I had not been watching anime for a period of more than five or six years. I know right? How on Earth did I even survive that? Now though I have so much anime to watch, that I don’t even know where to start anymore. Besides my own rather formidable dvd collection, I now also have Crunchyroll and more recently Netflix, that have such a great variety of anime series on offer. So what to do about this problem? I’m just going with the flow I guess. I now try to watch a series from my own dvd collection, and then one from either Netflix or Crunchyroll. Just to keep some kind of balance. Erm, yes I guess I can be weird like that at times. Anyway, it was Netflix that was next in line, and after browsing through their considerably large animelist, my eyes were drawn to Deadman Wonderland.
In Deadman Wonderland the life of the seemingly ordinary highschool student Ganta Igarashi is about to take a turn for the worse. When his class is preparing to take a school field trip to the privately owned prison Deadman Wonderland, that at the same time serves as an amusement park, a mysterious being suddenly appears. The being that is known as The Red Man, slaughters the entire class, with the exception of Ganta. Being the only survivor, Igarashi soon gets charged with mass murder. Things get even worse when overwhelming evidence is presented that can’t be explained and soon young Ganta is sentenced to death and sent to the Deadman Wonderland prison. Once there he meets a mysterious white haired girl called Shinto, that saves him from a bunch of bullies that were about to kill him. All of a sudden a large explosion rocks the prison and brings down a large object right on top of Ganta and Shinto. Just when it is about to crush them, a mysterious power awakens in Ganta that allows him to take control of his own blood. In this way he manages to keep the object from falling on their heads. With the awakening of this power it is beginning to become apparent that Deadman Wonderland holds many secrets, and not all of them very friendly…..
Well, let me start this review by saying that this series is not, I repeat not, for the faint of heart. To call this series rather gory is quite the understatement. The blood flows freely in this anime, and I am not talking about a few small drops either. No we have buckets full of blood that are spilled, including several mutilations, and a rather nasty removal of an eyeball, that makes this a really brutal show. But before you all turn the other way, let me tell you that this show also kicks ass (pardon my French). I have never seen an animeseries that featured such a unique power. Ganta, and a rather large cast of other colourful characters, can use their own blood to form weapons like swords, whips or even projectiles. And this makes for a couple of incredibly cool fightscenes between the inmates, that while at times rather bloody, really are highly entertaining to watch. It’s almost as if you are back in Rome during the days of gladiator fighting.
As mentioned the cast is rather large, and more and more are added with each episode. This eventually results in quite a few them being rather bland, and not ones that you can form an attachment to. But one character I guarantee you will in love with is Shinto. This free spirited girl that has a special, and really protective bond with Ganta is a truly fun character. Sometimes a little crazy, at other times seemingly innocent, but more than capable of taking care of herself she is the absolute highlight of this anime. Ganta, the hero of the series is your typical innocent young boy character, that you have seen in quite a number of other shows. That is not to say that you don’t feel sympathy for him though. Not only is he wrongfully accused, he also gets confronted with a mysterious power and is placed in the most awful place one can imagine. It is enough to drive most men or women insane, but Ganta keeps fighting the good fight, and you have to admire that.
For those of you that are observant, you might have already taken a glance at the final score I have given this anime. Made you look didn’t I? So why the low score for a show that I haven’t been really negative for yet? Well, it’s unfortunately one of those anime series that wraps things up in a really bad way. Or maybe it’s even better to say it doesn’t wrap up anything. After 12 episodes you are left with so many unanswered questions, and no real resolution that you end up feeling rather frustrated. I absolutely hate it when something like this happens. I can honestly say that I had a lot of fun watching this, up until the final few episodes. And this is really such a shame. The storyline for this was very good, the animation more than decent, there were cool fightscenes and some very interesting characters. And then it all went to hell in a handbasket. Whether or not you want to give this a try depends on the fact if you don’t mind shows that end with with no real resolution. I do have to admit that the fightsequences alone are worth seeing at least once, so there is that. All in all, despite a pretty big list of positives I can’t really bring myself to fully recommend this one. So watch at your own discretion.
I give Deadman Wonderland a 6 out of 10 score.
Ug this show was not good for me. Though if I could, I would purchase just one episode of this all for the “Fucking primroses!” That was the best part XD

Haha lol 😂😂 Yeah that was a cool part, you are not kidding. But yeah, this series could have been so much better. I really enjoyed it up until the end that really wasn’t even an end. Such a shame 😢

Yeah, that really is too bad. Who knows though, a lot of things that “would never get another season” are so maybe this will get another chance one of these days. Any way, enjoyed the review as usual 🙂

Thank you 😊 As much as I hope this is hoi g to happen I seriously doubt it. I can’t really think of an anime series that has not had a new season in such a long time get picked up again. But who knows maybe this will be the exception 😀

Exactly 🙂 Otherwise there are plenty of great shows out there.

I was enjoying this show and then it just stopped. It didn’t even try to pretend it was an actual ending and that kind of killed any rewatch value. It is a shame and this is a series I’d love to see rebooted and actually done to completion.

When I started this series i actually did not even see the amount of episodes. When episode 12 ended and a new one did not appear I was wondering if I had missed something. You are so right, this was not even an ending. It just stopped, and I really was so disappointed by that. I really was enjoying it a lot as well, as the concept and storyline was very cool.

At first I liked this series, but it very quickly took on a “superpower of the week” feel, before briefly dipping back into something interesting with the Resistance, and Ganta’s training, before rushing to an incomplete ending. It’s clear that this is another case of someone in charge of accounting abruptly declaring “we only have the budget for 2-3 more episodes so wrap it up.”
I will say that I struggled with the character of Ganta. Sometimes he seemed to truly reflect the absurd horror of what was happening to him, other times he seemed oddly and abruptly acclimated to it.
I did like Shinto’s whimsical style, her insanity, and while he had his flaws, I also enjoyed Ganta’s first formal opponent, the one who turned his blood into a blade. But Ganta as a protagonist felt…lacking for me.
Still, an enjoyable series, for a time.

Yeah, there were so many cool elements in this show. This is a perfect example of how to seriously mess up something that is truly awesome and turn it into something dreadful.
While I admit that Ganta certainly wasn’t the best ever anime character (lol), I did admire his not taking crap attitude at certain points, and for keeping up his resilience.
Shinto though was a whole other matter. I seriously enjoyed her antics 😂 In the end though this series just fell short of the mark, and that was a real shame as it could have been a really cool series that deserved better. Thanks for your response 😀

Yeah, lots of little interesting things, but the main narrative felt a little too familiar for my taste. Interesting at the outset, but gradually it became more and more familiar.

You and I watch complementary anime – maybe we could join forces to watch all anime… A friend of mine had already given me a very similar review so I might be skipping this one. You haven’t had much luck in the anime department lately…

Haha, that would be an awesome idea. I would probably have to quit my job though to watch all anime 😂
No I guess I haven’t. Hopefully the next show I’m going to be watching will be better I’m an optimistic kind of guy, so i just keep the faith 😊

YES YES SOMEONE REVIEWED THIS!! I heard about this series and I always wanted to take a look for the gory side LOL it’s unfortunate however that it didnt wrap up so well in the end 😦 Are there any new seasons after this? Because unanswered questions are so annoying sometimes T_T

Haha, well to watch it for the gory side alone is actually not such a bad idea lol😂 Unfortunately though it is a series that did not get a new season. As the show is now already 6 years old I doubt that will happen anytime soon. And there are way too many unanswered questions you will be left with unfortunately 😢

I remember being excited to watch this, but disappointed with how it turned out. They cut a lot of stuff from the manga and the show just ended without answering anything.
The manga wasn’t completed when the show was running, so maybe that’s why they ended it the way they did? I dunno, but now that it’s done, it would be awesome if we got a second season to tie everything up.

Yeah I was really enjoying this series, but that ending really ruined it. It could be that they did not complete it because the manga was not finished, but I don’t know. It just seems such a waste of time.
Real shame as I really did enjoy this one. As the series is now 6 years old I don’t think we will get a follow up anytime soon 😢

That’s about matches what I’ve heard from other reviews. Seems to be one of the few shounen adaptations that slipped through the cracks and wasn’t renewed for a second season.

Yeah and it’s a real shame too as this certainly wasn’t a bad series. There were quite a few elements that were highly enjoyable. This definitely was a series that just begged to have a second season😢

Omg I loved this anime. The gore and the violence was awesome. I read the manga series so I appreciate the series even more. It’s one of my favs. Sad you didn’t care for it haha

Oh it’s not that I didn’t care for it. In fact I highly enjoyed it. But the way the show ended and leaving us with so many questions that went unanswered that’s what made me give this such a low rating. I really hope someone picks this up for a second season, but I highly doubt that 😢

I wanted to start a petition to get a second season. But it didn’t do so well in Japan. ☹️☹️

It’s been a couple years since I gave up on animes myself. I do have a sudden urge to diving back in it for some of those amazing shows/movie/mangas out there that I’m completely missing out, but I feel like I’ll not only have a hard time fitting them (alongside movies, shows, comics and novels) but I’ll also not know where to start (except maybe by revisiting some of the classics I highly enjoyed as a teenager! Deadman Wonderland does sound quite fantastic though. At least visually. The amount of gore, and the special powers have got me intrigued. The issues with it has me looking at it sideways now though hahah Wonderful review, sir. Have you tried Castlevania? On Netflix? Came out recently (couple of months ago actually). I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on that. Unless you already did and I just missing your post on it! 😀

Thank you very much for the kind words😊 I appreciate it. Yeah I know exactly what you mean. It is sometimes very hard to keep up with everything. I watch way too much stuff myself at times (lol) but the great thing about anime is that every episode lasts for only 23 minutes so there is usually some time left in a day where zi can fit in one or two episodes 😊
As for knowing where to start that can be hard as well. I kind of rolled back in by following some great anime blogs. Another thing you might try is the website animelist that has some great suggestions as well. It’s a good thing to give this one a pass though 😊
Castlevania was awesome. I did give it a review but it was a while back 😉 Thanks again for your comment 😀

I’ve kept a phrase behind my head for every time I watched this show:
“You are not tryharding…”
Well, I felt betrayed af.

Yeah…that is not such a bad phrase to keep at hand. And I did feel the same afterwards. Really annoying when a series with so much potential is wrapped up in such a way 😢

Going on an anime hiatus isn’t all bad. When you return to the hobby it’s easy to research what the best shows that came out were. You can then just focus on the good stuff and not waste time on the mediocre.
I liked Deadman Wonderland because of its surprising twists and quirky characters. Such a shame that a second season never got produced. Thankfully I was able to find out how the story ends via the manga.
What’s annoying is that the source material isn’t very long. It wouldn’t have taken too many episodes to adapt the whole thing into anime form.

Haha: yeah you are right. One of the main reason as well was the fact that I found it increasingly hard to find anime in my country. Luckily that problem is solved now.
Yeah I really enjoyed this series myself as well. It was one of those endings that left my jaw pretty much wide open wondering if I had missed a turn somewhere or something. Real shame. I wish a second season would be made: but it’s highly doubtful I guess seeing this is now 6 years old 😢

I really enjoyed it so much at the start. I was so excited on how it was all going to turn out but then it just felt flat. Also, I really didn’t like Ganta. There are just too many shows out there where everything other than the protagonist is good.

Exactly. It was a really fun series and then the end came and ruined it all. This unfortunately happens way too often with good Animeseries.
As for Ganta he definitely wasn’t a very original character. A protagonist that you pretty much see appearing in a lot of Animeseries. I did admire the fact that he never seemed to give up though, no matter what happened to him 😊

I’ve had my eye on this one from a LONG time!
Still sounds interesting, but yeah, the ending seems a little off…
Hopefully the manga does continue where the anime left off, huh?

Hmm, yeah it’a definitely worth a try. There are still quite a number of positives for this series. But the end is just really unfortunate and makes everything that came before it a bit useless.
I hope that in some way the story get’s resolved at done point, but I’m not keeping my hopes up for that 😊

Really good review. If you liked the concept of weaponized blood, may I recommend Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront) to you? It’s nowhere near as intense or gory as something like Deadman, but it’s well animated and has a really nice story to it. It was created by the same person behind Trigun.

I’m always in for good recommendations so I am adding this one to my to watch list for sure. And it certainly helps a lot by saying it was made by the same person behind Trigun (I loved that one). Thanks a lot 😊

Thank you 😊 It really was quite unfortunate. The series itself was very cool, but the ending really ruined it for me. Other than that there was so much to enjoy for it, thst it was such a waste to drop the ball with such a bad ending 😢

Deadman Wonderland is on Netflix? How on earth did I miss that. I’ve been looking to watch this anime for so long and never been able to find it (the internet here is too slow, for Crunchyroll to work properly 😦 ). I really hope it’s not something, that’s only available on Netflix in some countries.
Thanks for sharing your Netflix info. 😀 Although I now know, this anime doesn’t wrap up well, I still really want to watch it 🙂

Still there is quite a lot to enjoy. I hope it is available for you on Netflix and that you are going to enjoy it enough. Have fun 😀

hehe I totally sneaked a peak at the final rating 😉 It’s such a shame about the way it wrapped up (or rather didn’t) because it was sounding good up till that point (well aside from the gore, which I’m not sure I could stomach on that level 😉 ) Great review though!

Yeah, that was really annoying. I was seriously enjoying this show. Yes the gore at times was a bot over the top, but I liked the action and the storyline. But when it wrapped up like this, it just made it really seem as if I had wasted quite a bit of time
Glad you enjoyed the review, and thank you again 😀

Well, that really is the biggest problem with this series. It is really cool right up until the end. So that’s why this is so hard to recommend as well 😢 I will leave it up to you to watch it. It certainly has enough in it to enjoy, but the ending kind of ruins it.
Thanks for the comment and the kind words 😀
