Have you ever felt the pressure when you are writing a review? A cold sweat that the things you are about to write might not go over so well with everyone? I’m feeling that pressure right now. A certain amount of dread for a review that I have been promising for quite a while now. Namely that of the anime Ergo Proxy. And now that I’m actually starting my first draft for this, I don’t really know where to start. Because honestly I have no clue what to make of this series. When I first started watching this, and that was weeks ago, I really felt this was a anime that contained a lot of elements that I usually enjoy quite a lot. A dark dystopian future, a very unusual but utterly terrific style of animation, and characters that at first I thought I would really like. But at some point, it all started to go wrong. At least for me it did. So what happened? Let’s first talk about what this series is all about, before I am going to dive into the review itself.
Ergo Proxy is set into a future where thousands of years ago the planet was all but destroyed by a global ecological disaster. What is left of humanity lives on in a domed city called Romdo. It is supposed to be a utopia, but as is so often the case beneath all the shine, dark secrets are being kept from the general public. The humans that live in Romdo coexist with androids called AutoReivs. The AutoReivs serve humanity in different kind of ways either as Companions or Entourages. The peace is soon shattered when a series of grissly murders take place. Re-L Mayer is the investigator who is assigned to look into the case together with her AutoReiv partner Iggy. While at the site of one the murders, Re-L encounters an unknown entity. She has never seen anything like that before and later she is attacked at her house by a similar being. Her investigation eventually leads her to a young immigrant called Vincent Law that seems to be involved with these mysterious creatures called Proxys. But just how is he connected to them, and just what exactly is a Proxy? All the answers to these questions might be more than Re-L can handle, and might shake Romdo to it’s very core….
Ergo Proxy starts very promising. The first ten or so episodes tell a very interesting supernatural mystery, with some intriguing moments that will have you guessing at every turn. Re-L’s investigation into just what exactly is going on is a fascinating journey to follow, with many twists and turns. Eventually she ends up outside the city of Romdo together with Vincent Law and a young AutoReiv called Pino. And that is the point where it all started to go wrong for me. Every episode afterwards sees the three of them travelling across a dark and very depressive landscape aboard an airship. And almost nothing happens. The time is spent with a lot of talking, and talking….and more talking. Okay, this is maybe a bit of an exageration, but it is not very far of the mark. I don’t mind slow series at all. I certainly watched quite a few of those that were incredibly entertaining. But I do mind it, when a show goes into very deep philosophy mode about subjects that I can really not make heads nor tails of. And it becomes even worse for me when all of a sudden an episode is inserted that is just complete and utter crazyness.
Let me explain that last remark. Episode 15 sees our three leads enter a quizshow completely out of the blue. Yes you read that right, a quizshow. It is so incredibly out of place when compared to the rest of the series that one just had to wonder what the point of it was. Another thing that I was not satisfied with, was the wrap up of the story. Everything just goes into full on speed mode in the last 3 episodes. It was almost as if the creators were thinking we don’t have any time left, let’s finish this as quick as we can. The result is an unsatisfactory conclusion with quite a few things just not fully explained. And then there are the characters. Both Re-L and Vincent are just not really people that I would love to make friends with. They are incredibly dull, have an expression on their faces most of the time as if someone has died, and quite frankly were not people I could feel any sympathy for. Which is a real shame because the design for Re-L especially is really beautiful. She looks bad ass so to speak, and could have ended up as a truly amazing character.
This is turning a bit into a rant, for which I am truly sorry. Is there nothing positive? Yes there is. The animation style is really unusual but also very beautiful. The dark city of Romdo looks amazing, and so do the truly dark backgrounds. And then there is the character of Pino. This young childlike AutoReiv was a joy to watch, and one of the only shining lights in a series that consisted of characters that at any point seemed almost ready to take their lives. Or at least that was what they looked like at times. Pino was infected with the so called Cogito virus that makes her self aware. It only made her more human, and quite luckily a very welcome happy note in this very depressive series. The storyline itself, besides the for me truly poor execution, was still very intriguing. Especially in the beginning it contained some very cool elements that were a joy to watch and at times had me on the edge of my seat.
I really wanted to like this anime. I’m sure a lot of you reading this review might even be surprised at my reaction. But in the end the series just didn’t work for me. It unfortunately happens at times, and sometimes even with shows that contain elements that normally should have you bursting into joy. Another note of warning I also want to give to you is that this really isn’t a happy show. It can really affect your mood, turning it into something very melancholy. I know some people can be overly sensitive for things like this, and that’s why I’m at least mentioning it. So, in closing I want to say that this is my own opinion on an anime that really has some very high ratings. Don’t take my word for it, but just go and watch it yourself and maybe you will be someone that is going to really enjoy it. I hope not everyone is going to bite my head off after posting this. So with a few drops of sweat on my brow I guess I’m going to press the publish button.
I give Ergo Proxy a 5 out of 10 score.
I have a copy of this in my collection of anime dvd’s. The main male character was my favorite American voice actor ( Forgot his name, sorry… so, why is he my favorite ? he is the voice actor of my favorite character in the video game Persona 3….Akihiko, and I think, though not sure , he’s Qrow in RWBY.)
Anyways…. I’d watched this, of course, but I cannot recall a single thing in the story. I just know the images were all gray. ^^

Well..you would be right about that: nearly all of the images in this anime are gray lol. And that is quite frankly also what made this one at times so very depressing.
Hmm, okay that’s cool to know. I have watched this one with the original Japanese voices (I hardly ever listen to dubs), but it’s always nice to have a favorite voice actor 😀

I definitely feel you with the pressure filled reviews. It can be a bit intimidating writing a review for a show you didn’t really like that everyone else loved. I’ve had to do it for several very popular kdramas, including one this year.
I actually tend to have a similar yet opposite problem more often though…liking a drama that everyone else hated. I’m someone who loves kdramas with a passion, and I always look for positive elements in shows. So I frequently really enjoy dramas that others hate or find so-so. You write this glowing review about how wonderful it is when others just want to hate on it, lol. A lot of times I try to point out some things others may see as negative even if I didn’t. Just like I point out positive things in dramas I didn’t care for. You usually do that too which makes for a more balanced review. But in the end, we all have our own likes and dislikes, and that is perfectly fine. Now if everyone could just realize that, we’d be all set 😉

Haha…Well I can say that I have had that problem a couple of times as well. I tend to enjoy stuff that is hated by a lot of people, or in this case a show that is loved by people.
But that never seizes to stop me from voicing my opinion. I know you do the same with your reviews which is always very cool.
And yes wouldn’t the world be a much better place if everyone realised that. I do have to say though that I have never had any problems on WordPress with nasty comments or stuff like that. Everyone is just very polite, even if opinions differ from my own. Which quite honestly is awesome 😀

I still haven’t actually finished this anime. I started it (more than once) and it really does look like something I should enjoy and yet… I still don’t know why I don’t like it (and I haven’t made it as far as that quiz episode yet and I’m going to be thankful for that given that doesn’t seem to fit with anything I watched of the series). Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it. This reminded me I really should just finish this at some point to get it off my list but on the other hand I usually find something else to watch.

I did not say this in the review, but I actually started it twice myself. The first time I left it at episode eight….and then after quite a while I picked it up again (but decided to rewatch the first 8 episodes again because I kind of forgot things).
It is the same with me: I usually love shows like this (which should come as no surprise since you wrote that awesome postapocalyptic post for me), but I just could not get into this series. It just didn’t click for me. Can’t explain it. Well…I think there are much better shows on your list that you can finish besides this one 😊

I thin kI got a little mroe enjoyment form this than you. To be fair, I did find that towards the end, I started paying lass attention though. It kinda lost me , not enough to give up, but enough to not be fully invested. If you tend to like dystpian sci-fi, you may do better with Psycho Pass. That I found took a little while to kick into full gear, but when it did, it became really good.

I can understand that. The beginning of the show was very cool, but then it just faded out into the gray that this show features so very often. It really is a shame though, as it contains so many cool elements and things that I usually enjoy.
As for Psycho Pass: I absolutely loved that one. It was terrific. I haven’t yet seen the 2nd season (but I heard it was a whole lot less interesting than season 1). But the first season was amazing and one of my absolute favorite Animeseries 😀

I feel pretty much the same about the show. It started amazingly but then just didn’t know what it wanted to be. Being experimental is fine but solving a deep mystery with dark elements and hideous holes in Vincent’s socks for me don’t mix at all. The quizshow was interesting in its own way but it had no place in such a story. At least the OP sounded way better than expected.

Yes the OP was such a beautiful song. Aargh, should have mentioned that in the things that were positive in my review lol 😂
But yes, I agree…it had so many things it wanted to explore, but in the end it just did not know how to solve it all, and it just became very dull. Real shame as this could have been such an amazing and truly terrific anime series. Haha, loved that line about Vincent’s socks by the way 😂😂

As to characters which you can’t sympathize, that is indeed a problem since it’s one thing that I consider a must to a good story. But we’ll see. Nice review! It gave me few hints on what to expect.

For me personally, I love this anime. It many ways in reminds me of Ghost in the Shell. The premise, the dark underlying tones, the heavy psychology aspects, so on and so forth. When I saw the first episode I wasn’t sure if I was going to the rest of the series because it is a bit odd and hard to follow, but like most shows that deal with psychological themes I begin to think about it more and more. It was at the back of my mind begging for me to continue with the story. The same for all three films in the Project Itoh series (, The Empire of Corpses, and Genocidal Organ). When I watch shows/films that have heavy dialogue and question the thought/perception of the world around us I tend to try and formulate my own premise in my mind. These types of shows/movies want us to come up with our own understanding of the world that we live in. They want us to question the concept of life and come up with our own answers instead of having a concrete solution. I really enjoy series/movies that don’t make any sense. I enjoy coming up with my own endings or realities when I watch something new. It’s almost like an open ended question. There is no right or wrong, and everything isn’t black or white. Sometimes what we know is a gray area and I am perfectly okay with that. You might reach a better understanding of the anime if you read this guide/breakdown of what was really going on in the show 🙂 https://cureclover.livejournal.com/759.html

Thanks for your incredible and very eloborate comment. I always appreciate it when someone takes time to provide such a cool comment. So thank you for that.
Honestly. I really love Ghost in the Shell (and the animeseries). Even though that one also provides a lot of things to think about, it contained very interesting characters (such as the Major, who is to date still my alltime favorite anime character). Even though that one also has an at time difficult story to follow, it contains enough elements that I could follow along with.
This series though, almost had none of that (for me that is). I did not get any attachment whatsoever to any of the characters, the story was too hard to figure out most of the time. When I really need to read a background on a series or movie to eventually understand it, that takes from me too much enjoyment. I honestly don’t know why I ended up disliking this one so much, especially since it contains so many elements in it that I usually enjoy. Just one of those things I guess 😢 Thanks again for this comment, and for providing the link. I will check that out for sure 😊

Also my favorite scene in Ergo Proxy is when Re-L is in the bathroom and Vincent comes in his Proxy form. I don’t know why but I just love it! Such a great scene! Also Dance in the Vampire Bund starts off really weird too (I don’t know why anime creators like to add in game show scenes to anime) but I never finished the rest of the series because I hated the first episode. Haven’t watched this series, but do understand writing under pressure. I did one on oremongatari (my love story) where I wanted to push it out at a certain time. And it felt horrible. Thus I never do reviews on deadlines, I have tried a editorial calendar, it is fun but it only works for those that are more productive and are good at managing.
Yeah the exposition in some animes can be really dull. The fate series is notorious for that.

The synopsis sounds really cool, shame that the series didn’t live up to its potential. Maybe they could have avoided rushing the finale if they hadn’t spent so much time on those talking airship segments?
I don’t mind a lot of talking if the characters are fun (Bakemonogatari). Constant chatter can be torture though if they characters are dull.

Ah that’s too bad that you didn’t end up enjoying this one too much. I can shed some light on a few concepts and ideas when they go outside the city that may clarify some things for you though.
So when they start going to other places and the show talks a lot more, they are going to different domes like Romdo. The idea is that each dome is representative of a different approach to life, or philosophical viewpoint on how people should live. It’s mostly there to challenge the status quo while pushing ideas and themes that really wouldn’t be possible if they just stayed in Romdo.
Episode 15, the quiz show, is actually one of my favorite episodes. However, I recognize my bias in that since I enjoy game shows quite a bit. Any way, this episode is just a recap episode but it advances the plot in a subtle way. Since I haven’t watched this recently, I can’t really get into the nuance of it but if you approach it with the knowledge that it is a recap episode and a way to push some foreshadowing and character growth, it is a lot better. Still, it is out of place but all of the domes are in a way.
It definitely has a rushed ending though and Ergo Proxy is a device series. Glad you stuck it out and gave it a watch any way. For what’s on offer here I think it is unique and worth at least the one time experience despite there being better content out there.

This certainly was a series that is one of those that you should at least have seen once. I’m usually not one to give up on a series no matter how bad it gets 😀
I liked the aspect of the different domes (I did not know it all contained different philosophies so that was a really cool thing actually). The gameshow episode though felt so out of place for me that I did not really like it (despite the fact that I also love gameshows).
As I mentioned in my review I really had wanted to like this series. Even though there were a lot of elements in it that I usually like in a series. Thanks for the clarifications though: they did help in giving me a bit more insights 😀

I can admire the bleak atmosphere for my vintage heart has seen many classics in such colours but evidently that comes down to having an exciting plot to follow through.
Ergo Proxy makes for an aesthetically pleasing background but it is unfortunate that it wasn’t so enjoyable for you, though never worry so much for voicing your opinions. I would say this is a very fair review.
One of the reasons I was interested in seeing what you made of Ergo Proxy is because it is a bit divisive.
What I find interesting about the series itself is how, where most series have a consistent quality across their various aspects Ergo Proxy excels at some things, and really struggles in others, similar to how I find the writings of HP Lovecraft.
In many ways I feel that, while I don’t believe the creators succeeded on all fronts, I love that they tried. I found this series very interesting as a kind of “raw material” that I could engage.
The quiz episode was definitely a little rough, and I also found the last few episodes a bit rushed, but I really enjoyed the assorted episodes in the middle, where two characters, and later a third, were traveling.
Often these episodes explored interesting ideas, and provocative imagery.
There were times, while I was watching it, where I wished that they would settle on exploring the issue of androids developing free will as a “disease”, or the questions of identity, but up until the last 3 episodes I was definitely always curious, and eager to watch the next episode.
I also have to say, I really enjoyed the fights in this series. The scenes where one character becomes “full of wrath” were some of my favorites.
It took me a long time to piece together the “meaning” that I believe the creators were going for, and I do feel that it was too ambitious, and overly muddied by out of place episodes like the quiz and the theme park, but I can’t help but applaud the fact that they tried something so experimental.
Granted the version I watched included whole pages of fan-created text explaining the symbolism, literary references, and underlying philosophy.
I think maybe the problem is that the series tried to explore so many interesting things, but because it never found its focus, it couldn’t bring the story to a satisfying conclusion.
I think the choice to include a character I’ll simply refer to as “One” was where it really went off the rails for me.
In any case, thank you for sharing your thoughts. This is one of those stories that I really like to discuss, but rarely get the opportunity. Between your review, and the remarks others have made, I feel like I’ve gotten to have that conversation. So thank you, again. 🙂

I definitely think you mention some very valid points of why this show ultimately didn’t work (at least for me it didn’t). Too many ideas in one anime is absolutely one of them. That doesn’t have to mean that it never works, but if you don’t have enough time to clear some of them up in a good way it ultimately fails.
I agree with the fight scenes. Some of them were truly awesome 😀
It’s a real shame because as mentioned it contained so many elements that I usually enjoy in shows that it’a a shame that I ended up not liking it.
Thanks again for your absolutely terrific comment 😀

You’re welcome, and thank you for sharing your thoughts. It is a shame, but at the same time it makes for a very interesting conversation, and an example of how “something more” is needed to make a good story. Examples of what don’t work are often just as interesting as those that do. For me, everything was going well until they reached their destination. That’s when they shifted from episodic contemplation to “welp, we better bind these threads together.” I don’t regret watching it, and still revisit some episodes, but like a fair number of stories, in the end they just couldn’t manage to land it.

I can relate to your writing pressures. The thought of having someone jump down your throat, for giving your honest opinion is very intimidating and scary. But luckily people tend to be respectful of ones opinion on WordPress, so you’re very much safe 😀

Yeah, although I have to say that I hardly ever drop a show, no matter how bad it gets. I guess I’m kind of obsessive that way lol 😂😂 Seriously though, there have also been shows that start of real bad, and turn into something pretty awesome at the halfway point.
But you are so true, I have not so far seen any bad comments appearing on WordPress. Everyone is just very respectful to other persons, which I think is just awesome 😀

Just found your site a little while ago. Thanks so much for this review. I’ve been meaning to check out Ergo Proxy for a while and after reading your thoughts I’m really curious now and think I’m finally going to check it out.
And I totally get what you mean when you were talking about the pressure associated with reviewing something, especially something so well liked. I haven’t done a whole bunch of anime on my page yet, but just being a fan I know that there have been times when things have come highly recommended to me and I just didn’t love them like I thought I would.

Thanks so much for these very kind words. I really appreciate it 😊 Glad you enjoyed reading the post!
I hope you will enjoy the series more than I eventually did. As mentioned it certainly wasn’t a bad series, but in the end this one just wasn’t for me.
Yeah it’s sometimes pretty strange. Sometimes a series or movie comes highly recommended, and you still end up not liking it. But that’s also the fun thing about movies/anime/tv series in general.
Thanks again for your great comment 😊

Great review! I was tempted by this but a friend said it started to bore him.
I hate it when anime’s aren’t fantastic. I just expect them all to be wonderful 😢

Thank you very much 😀 Yeah, I’m always very fond of saying: you can’t win them all. And I guess the same can be said of anime. I really had expected more of this as well, but it was for me at least quite a disappointment. But there were also quite a number of people that did enjoy it, so who knows, maybe you are one of them 😊

One of my absolute favourite shows, but one which is, admittedly, pretty impenetrable. Multiple viewings are definitely advised and whether that works against the show is up for debate. Either way, I love all the philosophical elements, meta storytelling and subversive qualities. Interesting to read your take, but then I live for this stuff 😝

Thank you very much. Yeah it’s a series that definitely is in need of a second view, which I am going to do next year, that is for sure 😊 I didn’t completely dislike it, but it at times went a bit too far of the grid for my tastes. But maybe a second viewing will change my mind: I never say never 😀
