You have to wonder what kind of fascination the Japanese seem to have with destroying Tokyo in increasingly inventive ways. We have seen earthquakes, tidal waves, supernatural disasters and even huge monsters laying waste to the city in countless anime and live action movies throughout the years. It provides great entertainment, I have to be honest in that, but it does make me want to know if there is just some kind of hate against this city. Whatever the reason is, in the animeseries I am about to review there is yet another threat against it. Although it is called the Tokyo area in this anime to be more specific.
It is the year 2021, and the human race has almost been destroyed by the parasitic virus known as Gastrea that turns it’s host into horrifying monsters. What’s left of mankind now lives in cities protected by huge stone Monolith walls that are made from a special material called Varanium, which is able to subdue them. Not long after, children were born that carried the virus within them, but did not turn into monsters. Instead they gained superhuman abilities which were incredibly useful in fighting the Gastrea. Known as the Cursed Children, they were only females. A special fighting force is formed, the Civil Securities, that pairs these children with a handler called a Promoter. The highschool student Rentaro Satomi is one of these Promoters who operates in the Tokyo Area. Rentaro is paired with the loveable Enju Aihara, who has a complete crush on him. But soon things become grim as the Gastrea are beginning to gain ground. Will the remainder of mankind finally fall into oblivion?
Black Bullet is a 13 episode animeseries that for lack of a better term to describe it was just, well, fun. It isn’t the best thing that I have ever seen mind you, but quite honestly it’s one of those series that just doesn’t seem to do much wrong. From a story point of view I can’t say it will win the price for originality. A virus is ofcourse nothing new, although the way it is handled in this series is different from what you might be used to. Another thing that I found that was very cool was the use of the Cursed Children. Here we have young girls ranging from 10-13 years old that have all kinds of superpowers and act as though they are adults. Which ofcourse they are not. It provides both comedic but also at times very grim moments. The story unfolds rather nicely, and has a few tricks up it’s sleeves along the way, although there were not a lot of surprises.
The characters in the series are not it’s strongest point. The bond between Rentaro and Enju is pretty fun to watch at times. Although some people might also find some of the situations between them a little bit unsettling to watch, as Enju is of course still a child. I don’t think the series crosses any serious lines though, and for the most part it certainly gave a few laughs. During the later episodes a lot of new Cursed Children, also called Initiators are introduced together with their Promoters. And they just don’t get enough screentime to grow any real attachment to them. I felt the series could have used a bit more time to focus on it’s characters instead of throwing them at us without giving us time to get used to them.
What the series may lack in character development it more than makes up for in the action department. If you like action featuring superpowered beings fighting huge and horrifying monsters, this is a show that will certainly give you that. Some of the bigger Gastrea monsters had very cool designs, and it was incredibly satisfying to watch them get taken down in some of the more spectacular fights the series has on offer. But it’s not all monster fighting though, as Rentaro and Enju get to deal with a lot of different situations including assassination attempts and prejudice against the Cursed Children. The animation of the show is pretty good as well, and together with the music serves up a nice and pleasurable viewing experience. All in all I really enjoyed this one. The story for a change gets wrapped up for the most part in the end, although there was certainly room for a second season. Seeing it’s been almost 4 years since the release of this one, I doubt that will happen though. Black Bullet may not be for everyone, but if you like a bit of action coupled with cool monsters and interesting fight scenes, you might give this one a shot.
I give Black Bullet a 8 out of 10 score.
I kinda want to watch this, just to check out that guys top hat 🙂 It looks like he stole that hat from Professor Layton hehe. The storyline also sounds very interesting.
Love your reveiws. They always have a nice bit of humor to them 🙂

Haha, thank you so much, yeah and the funny thing is, I don’t even like comedies lol 😂😂 Seriously though, this series is definitely worth the watch. There is a lot of fun stuff that is going on, and it’s just one of those series that you go through in no time whatsoever 😊 Hope you will enjoy it, and thanks for the kind comment 😀

Lol, well it does not only look massive, it is massive 😂 But luckily there are not only spiders in this anime, so no worries 😊 It is a fun watch though that is for sure 😀

Great review. There is certainly a lot to like about the action in this anime and the relationship between Enju and Rentarou is awesome, though I found a lot of the characters were either underused or poorly used in this series. Still, it is a fun end of the world story for those who are into that kind of thing.

Thank you very much 😊 Yes, totally agree on that. In the final few episodes there are so many new characters that get added to the series, and they are hardly used at all. On that part the series could have definitely done better. But other than that, this was a fun watch. I enjoyed it quite a lot 😊

Thanks for the great review. This series first got my attention with its catchy OP. I’ve seen both good and bad reviews for it but on the whole, it seems like a fun show. That is one huge spider though.

It most certainly was. It’s like I said it isn’t the best thing in the world, but it has enough entertainment value in it to more than make it worth investing some time in. And just so you know, this spider isn’t the biggest creature in this anime 😀

Fantastic review Michel! I love anime, but I’ve fallen behind in the last several years. This definitely sounds like something I’d be interested in.😊

This was one of these animes that pretty surprised me. I started watching this with little expectations but in the end I got more enjoyment out of it than I expected. Always like it when that happens 😊

I think having a nuke dropped on their country had a deep effect on the Japanese. It’s not just Tokyo that gets destroyed often in fiction. During my time I have played many JRPGs were cities get blown up.
This series sounds decent. Not getting attached to the child warriors may be for the best. It can be heartbreaking when they get harmed, as I discovered when I read the Gunslinger Girl manga.

Yeah, you are certainly right about that. I think that has affected them in a lot of ways, which honestly is quite tragic if you stop to think about it 😢
This series is fun, no questions about it. I always compare shows like this to mcDonalds. You don’t want to eat there every day, but at times it is nice to do so 😊 Gunslinger Girl the anime is on my to watch list. Don’t know if it’s as hood as the manga, but at least now I am going to prepare myself for some heartbreak 😊

You know I just finished watching 1 Punchman (I know, late to the party), but I was wondering what to replace it with, and this sounds like a good fit. Black Bullet was on my “to watch list” but now it’s going in the lineup. Thanks for the recommendation.

Haha lol….well….than I am ashamed to say that I am even later to the party, as I haven’t seen 1 Punchman yet 🙈 Currently in the middle of Ergo Proxy, but perhaps after I have finished that, that one might be next.
As for Black Bullet, I hope you will enjoy the series. I truly liked it a lot, and it was just a very fun watch 😊

Ooh, Ergo Proxy is a real thinker. I’d love to read your thoughts, and discuss, after you finish.

I love Black Bullet! It will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the first anime I watched when my friend was first getting me seriously into anime. Not getting a season 2 really breaks my heart; the ending was pretty rough on me. One thing I loved the most about Black Bullet was actually its previews for the next episode. Since I watched it as it was coming out, I had to wait week by week for more. This was one show where I actually did watch the previews, as they didn’t contain spoilers, but just enough tease for the next episode to wonder “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON IN THIS QUOTE?!” It was maddeningly awesome, not to mention the really pretty visuals. They’d always accompany the quotes from the upcoming episodes with sketches of the characters. Really cool way to pump up the viewers for the next episode.

First: thank your for your eloborate and fun comment. Really enjoyed reading it.
Black Bullet was pretty surprising to me. It’s one of those series that I expected pretty much nothing from, and it turned out to be something truly amazing.
It really was a shame, the way it ended…I definitely would have loved to see a second season myself. But alas it was not to be. Still it was enjoyable and a great watch. And you are right the previews for this were very exciting 😊😊
