After reviewing Kong Skull Island earlier this week, I thought it would be fun to do another review that featured monkeys, or apes if you prefer. Honestly it is just a coincidence that these reviews are coming out in the same week, as I saw this film quite a while ago. It’s just one of those posts that for some reason I did not get around to earlier. In 1968 the original movie was first released starring Charlton Heston, and it is considered by many to be a science fiction cult classic. And of course it was inevitable that Hollywood at one point would remake this. The first attempt dates back to 2001, and was directed by Tim Burton. Starring Mark Wahlberg, it certainly wasn’t a bad film, but it also can’t be considered a very good one either. However in 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released. The first movie that would be the start of a new trilogy was a terrific film. It featured amazing special effects that for a change served in telling the story, instead of being the driving force of the movie.
Three years later the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes came out, and it was another amazing film. Again featuring ground breaking special effects, a heartwarming story, and plenty of action, it was a great follow up to the first movie. And now we have the War for the Planet of the Apes, which draws the trilogy to a close. In this third and final film, Caesar together with his family and the rest of his band of apes, tries to live peacefully in a secluded forest. This peace is shattered however when a ruthless human colonel attacks the camp of the apes. After suffering a terrible loss Caesar, together with a few of his most trusted friends, sets out on a path of revenge. In the middle of the quest they stumble across a young human girl who they eventually befriend and decide to bring along on their journey. Their path brings them ever closer to the colonel. Unbeknownst to them however this man has drawn his own plans, and they spell complete and utter doom for the remainder of the apes…..
Let me not keep you any further in suspense: War for the Planet of the Apes was a worthy end to a fantastic movie trilogy and then some. With a title that has the word war in it, you would expect a movie that has explosions, loads of action and other stuff like that in it. It’s all the more surprising however that this movie turned out very differently than I expected. This is not an action extravaganza, but more a very thoughtful drama set in a truly believable post apocalyptic science fiction world. We go along with Caesar and his friends on a journey that makes us question our own humanity at times. The apes were definitely possessed of more kindness, than the humans that were in this film. In fact, besides the young girl, there is not a single human character that you can relate to. Which is a good thing, because it’s the apes that you want to grow attached to in this movie. And they are brought to life in hyper realistic computer effects, that make the apes look completely real and lifelike.
The main character Caesar is again played by Andy Serkis, who already did such amazing work playing as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings saga. Even though his face is completely hidden by computer effects, Caesar almost feels like a human, and that is mostly because of the amazing work of this actor. The colonel is played by veteran actor Woody Harrelson. His character is pretty much as far from being human as one can be, which is funny considering he is almost the only human being you get to see in this picture. At least as far as the bigger roles go that is. Harrelson creates a truly loathsome character, that you will grow to hate throughout this film. And that of course is a credit to the acting skills of Woody.
War for the Planet of the Apes is a movie that I label as a must see picture. I would even go so far as to call this closing installment the best part of the entire trilogy. Some people may at times feel the movie is moving along too slow. I was never bored for one second though. All the scenes that were in the film were created with a single purpose in mind: to make us truly feel for a group of apes and see them in the same light as normal human actors. And I would say the film certainly succeeded in that mission. The movie is a truly beautiful film to look at, with amazing special effects, and a heartbreaking but ultimately hopeful tale as well. I highly recommend this movie. Even if you don’t regularly like science fiction I think you might still enjoy watching this one. Only if you are expecting an action fest it might be wise to avoid this one, for this is most certainly not an action oriented film.
I give War for the Planet of the Apes a 9 out of 10 score.
When you said, you’re going to write about War for the Planet of the Apes, this week, I didn’t expected it will be next day 😉
Thank you and have a nice day 🙂

Good review, diffenately need to see this movie. I enjoyed the previous two. I really like how Cesar is more human than the actual humans.

If you liked the previous two, you will also enjoy this one. It is a fitting end to a great trilogy. I hope you get to see it and enjoy it as much as I did. As got Caesar, I don’t think there has ever been a computer generated character that was more human than he. Well…except maybe for Jar Jar Binks…..erm….just kidding ofcourse 😂

It really was. What I loved about it is despite if featuring amazing special effects throughout the film, it never felt they lost sight of the story itself. Abd that’s what made it such a great film. As always, thank you for the kind comment. Truly appreciate it every time 😀

They are both very worth the watch, with this being the best one of the three (well in my opinion anyway 😊). If you do manage to get them I would love to hear your thoughts 😀

The first one was terrific, but in a very rare development, the sequels were even better. They are absolutely amazing films, and I hope you will enjoy them as well 😊

That’s a high score. Though I have heard some mixed reviews of it out there.

I think a lot of people expected a different movie. It’s not an action film, but really more along the lines of a drama. And that’s maybe why it has recieved such mixed reviews. I for one absolutely loved it, and thought it was a terrific and very fitting end to a wonderful science fiction trilogy 😊

I guess it’s the case of advertising making it look like something it isn’t. That can really annoy me sometimes.

Yeah, that could be it, I don’t know. Still, I really enjoyed it anyway, despite that fact. It just was such a beautiful story. Very well done 😊

Thank you again 😊 This part was certainly a big surprise to me. I had not expected a third part in a trilogy to entertain so much, but it was absolutely beautiful. Hope you will enjoy both parts, they are seriously awesome films 😊

It pains me that I haven’t had the chance to see this yet. I loved the other two so much. If this is as good as you say it is, then this could become one of my most fave trilogies out there.

It’s a very different film than the two previous installments. It focusses less on action, but the story is the thing that really shines here, and that’s the thing I absolutely loved about it. A wonderful and heartwarming tale, which is why I thought it was the perfect end to the trilogy 😊 Hope you will enjoying 😀

I still need to see this. I haven’t seen any of this trilogy, if you can believe it. Do you think I could watch this one by itself? Or do I need to see the first two?

Hmm, well you could watch this one by itself I guess, but I think the movie will make more sense if you have watched the two previous parts. And since all 3 movies are great, you will go through them in no time. Hope you will have a great time watching them 😊

I was really impressed with this trilogy, I think they are consistently good films. I am not sure they should be in contention for the best movie trilogy thought, but that is a personal thought. I found the religious aspects of this movie to be very interesting and the fact Matt Reeves referred to Caesar as Moses in an interview was also interesting. All in all a great movie.

I don’t know about that either, but I certain,y do think it ranks as one of the best movie trilogies that I have seen. I can’t really remember seeing many third parts of movies that were of this high quality. I can see why Matt Reeves would say such a thing, as when I think of it, it certainly has quite a few similarities to it indeed. But year this was a great film, completely agree 😊

Gotta love it when a literal ape is more human than the actual humans. I haven’t really watched even the first films. I think I saw a few minutes of one a while back but memory is hazy. Cool review as always!

Thanks very much. Well, to be honest, I was pretty skeptical of these movies at first. I am not really a big fan of the original film (even though I do have to admit it’s a classic). The first remake did not do much for me either. These reboots though are brilliant. I love the way the special effects are only being used for serving up the story, not in any way is this a big blockbuster special effects extravanganza. Which is really refreshing 😊

I have not seen a single Planet of the Apes movie! T_T Not one! Well, I did watch the one with Mark Wahlberg in it and thought it was so not my thing so I kind of gave up But seeing as all the others are awesome, I might just give them another try.
I’m glad the CGI got better, too, because in the time we’re living, there’s not excuse not to have pristine special effects.
Amazing review, once more! And as always, love the little captions under your pictures hahaha

Well, the funny thing is, I was not a very big fan of this franchise either. The original movie never captured my interest (despite that I know it really is a classic science fiction movie), and the remake with Wahlberg really didn’t capture my imagination either. These movies though are on a completely different level, and can’t even be compared to the aforementioned movies. I hope you will able to watch them at some point. I think you will enjoy them very much 😊 Thanks again for your lovely comment 😀

Saw this the other day and thought the exact same. Absolutely fantastic way to end the series. Loved the character of ‘Bad Ape’. Was nice to have another intelligent/talking ape other than Ceasar.
The death scenes in it were relatively well done. Even if I thought one in particular didn’t need to happen. The film would have had just as much a good ending if a certain character lived.

I could not agree more. When a franchise reaches it’s end there are a lot of examples of how the final film at times singlehandeldy destroys everything that came before. Here is luckily an example of it being done right.
While I certainly agree that the movie could have done without the death of said character, it also made it a bit more impactful as well. I really enjoyed the film and I am glad you did as well. Thank you for commenting 😀

I’ve heard mixed review from this film. Some said it’s good but some said it’s not. I myself haven’t watched so I don’t know. But reading your review, I guess this film is not bad after all. I am not a fan of the franchise but I have watched the two films before so I guess I have to watch this film anyway. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As always, it’s very entertaining! 😊

I think the reason the movie got such mixed reviews is that quite a number of people expected it to be a action heavy movie. Which it really isn’t. It’s more of a drama, but as a closing piece for a trilogy it really worked very well 😊

Hmm, you are more forgiving of the 2001 installment than I am…I have yet to see this one. I enjoyed the first two immensely, and I find it interesting that a post apocalyptic movie has you rooting for the apes rather than humans. I am not generally a fan of post apocalypse, something about wastelands just don’t appeal to me, though I did like the second installment of this series (I forget what it was called as rise and dawn are confusingly similar in meaning). I also like Woody Harrelson as an actor. He’s come a long way from Cheers!
