Spiderman, Spiderman..Does whatever a spider can. Spins a web any size…erm, sorry about that. This song has been stuck in my head for quite a while now. Can’t imagine why, but it might have something to do with the newest Spiderman movie. Yes our friendly neighbourhood spider is back in action. When I first heard of this project my reaction was one of complete and utter shock. I really thought Marvel (or Sony in this case), had lost their minds for doing yet another reboot of this beloved character. But luckily Spiderman Homecoming doesn’t waste it’s time with yet another retelling of Spiderman’s origin. No it pretty much picks up straight after the events of the third Captain America movie, and it has resulted in one of Spidey’s best movie adventures to date.
Peter Parker is very excited. After helping out Tony Stark with the fight against Captain America, he is expecting a call anytime now to join the Avengers. Yes…any time now….but the weeks pass by and the phone doesn’t ring. Peter meanwhile goes back to school and slips into his every day boring and, quite frankly, pretty geeky life. In his after school hours, he fights local crime in the guise of his alter ego Spiderman. But then one night he comes across a bunch of thieves that are robbing an ATM with some pretty hightech weaponry. While he succeeds in foiling the robbery, the thieves do manage to escape. Peter decides to find out where the weapons are coming from. Spiderman soon becomes the target of the nefarious arms dealer named Vulture, who is none to happy with Peter interfering with his business. With nobody to help him out, young Parker might have bitten off a little bit more than he can chew. But it might also be his best chance to prove what it really means to be a hero….
If I could use just one word to describe this movie it would be the word fun. This movie breathes out a very happy atmosphere right from the start, and doesn’t let up once during it’s two hour plus runtime. For starters there is a lot of humor in this film. While I am not a really big fan of comedies, it just works very well for this movie. There is always room for a great oneliner during a fight, or just some comedic banter in other situations. While the Marvel films were never as dark as their DC counterparts, there were certainly a few that did adress a few darker moments in the Marvel Universe. Here though, that never happens, and while I certainly would not label this one as a comedy, it is truly one of the most lighthearted Marvel films to date.
The cast is another reason to go and see this film. Tom Holland’s brief appearance in Captain America Civil War already made an impression, but here he really gets to shine. I can say without a doubt that he is certainly the best actor to have put on the Spiderman costume to date. He has a natural charm and wit about him, and that works very well for this character. Michael Keaton who plays the Vulture, manages to portray a villain that is very human. Yes, he is the bad guy, but it’s not a bad guy that you can’t relate to, or is necessarily very evil. He’s just a man that will do anything to provide protection for his family, and Keaton’s performance is simply outstanding in the way he manages to get that across to the moviegoing audience. And then ofcourse there is Robert Downey jr. as Tony Stark, a role he has played to perfection for the past decade. Even though he appears in only a few brief scenes, they are very important in the development of Peter Parker’s character.
The story for the film, while it won’t win any Oscars, is good enough to entertain, and provides a decent enough platform for the film’s action sequences. As with every Marvel film, the special effects are fantastic. Without giving away any spoilers, the ferry scene is especially cool, and showcases how much Hollywood has grown in providing very believable CGI. I can honestly say that this was a highly entertaining entry into the Marvel cinematic universe. I keep being amazed at the level of quality that Marvel keeps providing for their movies. I have yet to see a truly horrible Marvel film and with so many movies that will still be coming out in the years to come, I can only hope they manage to maintain this. If you love superhero movies, than this is definitely one you don’t want to miss. It is a fun, lighthearted film, that will let you leave the cinema with a big smile on your face. And that really is all you need, right?
I give Spider-Man Homecoming a 9 out of 10 score.
Fun review!

I was looking forward to this review. I was pretty sure this movie would redeem the Spider-man franchise, and it looks like it does. I should be going to the movies to watch it pretty soon. Looking forward even more to it now. I loved the humor Spider-man brought into Captain America 3, so always happy to have more of that!

It definitely redeemed the franchise, no worries about that. If you loved the humor that he brought to Captain America 3, you are going to really enjoy this one. Hope you will have fun! 😀

Slow as I am responding to comments on my blog (sorry about that) I just have to say that this is probably my favorite Spider Man film ever.
It wasn’t just that it was fun, it had a wonderful meaning to it. Peter gets knocked down a lot in this, but always gets back up, and keeps chasing his dream of being a hero. He learns not to sprint towards it, but to pace himself, to take his time, and learn all he needs to learn to do it right. That really just made me so happy to see.
Really, just a great film, and a great way to lift Spider Man back into his place as one of the great super heroes of all time.

Really, absolutely no need at all to apologise 😊 I am glad to hear from you again, and I know how much is on your mind at the moment, so really, take all the time you need 😀
Your comment is so true. I loved the fact that it almost felt like a father/son story in which Tony acted as a father figure for Peter, and urged him to become a man. It was done in such a terrific way. Every scene in this movie just made sense, and never once did I feel bored or anything like that. Really hope that when the sequel comes (and you can bet there will be a sequel), it will be as good as this one 😊 Thanks for your comment 😀

I too really like this film! Like I said in my review, it would be boring if they remake the film with the same story as before. But I’m glad that’s not the case. And of course, I am glad you too enjoy the film! What a fun and great review! Thank you for sharing 😊

Thank you for the kind words as always 😊 Yeah, I am really glad myself as well that they did not do this. It really would have been a total waste of time to do yet another origin story. I am very glad they decided not to do that 😊

I saw a bit of the ferry scene on the trailers(If that’s the only ferry scene… 🙂 ) Can’t wait to see this one too! Loving how Marvel makes new movies to connect with Avengers and to the whole Marvel Universe! And nice review~ 😀

Thank you very much, appreciate it. Yes, it’s really great that they keep doing this, and honestly how they are still able to maintain this high level if quality. Sure not every Marvel movie is as terrific as this one, but I have yet to see a Marvel film that was truly a waste of my time. Hope you will enjoy this one to when you see it, and you are right in your assumption: that is the ferry scene I am talking about 😀

I heard this is probably the best Spiderman movie. I’m glad Fox finally let Marvel make this movie, hopefully, they will do the same for Fantastic Four.

Yeah, it’s a real shame that the last fantastic four movie was such a letdown. If there is one superhero team that needs a good reboot, it’s that one. But who knows, maybe it will happen.
Yes, this was probably the best Spiderman movie to date. It was certainly the one that I had the most fun with 😊

I think Fox will lose their Marvel licensing rights in a few years, so next FF movie could be great.

I watched the movie but I don’t enjoy some of the funny parts and there are some awkward moments in the storyline but overall the movie is not too bad.

I didn’t even have any idea this was coming out but a friend watched and loved it. I trust her taste (and yours and Cain’s) and your review makes it clear why this movie deserves such a high rating. Way to redeem yourself, spidey 😛

It does look so fun. And Tom Holland is a talented young actor. In person and in interviews, he seems very affable and amiable too.

I wonder how I would feel about this one. I’m so very attached to the Spiderman trilogy with Toby Maguire. I loved those films so much! I watched the couple recent ones and found them to be alright, but I thought they lacked that magic the other ones had.
This one sounds quite different though, so maybe I would like it more. I’m usually a pretty objective person and do well with not comparing dramas and movies, but it seems like my nostalgia for the other ones will always cloud my enjoyment some, lol

I think you will enjoy this one. I am definitely on the same page: I also loved the original trilogy a lot, and did not care much about the follow ups. But this one is done so well, and with so much fun and great characters, that is impossible not to like it. I would be amazed if you would not enjoy this one. If you check it out at some point, let me know what you think of it 😊

Superb review as always! This looks like fun, and even has the brilliant Michael Keaton in it. Besides, Tom Holland’s cameo in Civil War was fantastic. That said, I’m skipping the theatrical release and waiting for the DVD release instead. Taking a break from the non-stop onslaught of Spider-Man movies. 😀

This film was a lot of fun and it succeeds in the hardest job a second reboot in less than a decade has: feeling new and unique. Love your thoughts on Keaton!

Can’t wait to see this! It feels like they have done Spiderman the way he was always meant to be done. After all, he has to be zaney and exciteable. He’s a teenager after all.

I loved this movie! I felt that Tom Holland combined Peter’s nerdiness with the humor of Spiderman. I wish that Marvel could have introduced Miles Morales though.

Yes, I could not agree with you more. It was really well done and certainly one of the better Marvel movies. Well, who knows? Miles moght get introduced in the sequel, or even in the new Avengers movie next year 😊

This movie was tons of fun. I like the actors and I like how Michael Keaton played a good villain and how he could be a realistic guy who is doing this for his family. I felt the humor to be great and it reminds me of Ant-Man.

Ant-man was terrific. It was a movie I expected very little off, but turned out to be a very pleasant surprise 😊
This film certainly reminded me of that one as well, and it’s so cool to see Michael Keaton back in action again. He is a terrific actor and I had not seen him appear in movies for quite some time. Now he seems te be everywhere again, which is awesome 😊

Yeah I agree. At first I didn’t expect much from Ant-Man but it was very good. Michael Keaton is a good example that as an old well-known actor, he still got it in the comic book movie world 🙂

I’m super late in getting to this but I’ve been trying to catch up on reading blogs, and I knew I had to come check this one out.
First off, I’ve really warmed up to Tom Holland as Peter. I was very skeptical about having yet another Spiderman movie but with Marvel Studios working on it this time there was a good chance they would make another great film. I did like Andrew Garfield’s wisecracking as that’s always been a big part of Spiderman’s character, but Tom did a really great job of capturing the naivety of a younger hero and the way he idolized Stark and the Avengers.
Stark was really good in this as well. A lot of people were saying that he was competing for screentime with Peter in this movie a lot but I felt like he was in there just enough to come off as a mentor/father figure that was trying to help Peter learn from his mistakes.
All in all it was just a really fun movie, so I agree with your score. I’m wondering if they will carry through with their plans to do another movie with Venom, who has always been one of my favorite hero/anti-hero characters.

Haha, no problem. As mentioned, I am currently trying to catch up on a lot of posts I have missed as well, so really no worries.
I at first thought, especially when I saw the trailers for it, that this would be a Iron Man part 3.5 movie, but I’m really glad to see it did not turn out like that.
Stark played a very small, but at the same time very important role, and it was great to see it portrayed like that. I’m also glad that this did not turn out into yet another origin story, but just picked things up after Civil War. Very cool. Venom is getting it’s own film. It’s going to be released late next year, and according to IMDB, it will star Tom Hardy in the lead role which would be very good news indeed. Venom is a great character, so i really hope the movie will do him justice 😊

Haha, no problem at all. I have missed quite a few movies myself, but I am trying to get back into things again. Luckily movies never go away, and you can always see them again. This movie was definitely a whole lot of fun, better than the last two. Fun is the exact right word for it. Thanks so much for your awesome comment and kind words! 😀

There are really a lot of cool films this year, and more to come as well. Thor, Justice League and of course Star Wars….so many cool things heading our way> the fun never seems to end 😀 Haha, yeah I usually never stick to one genre with movies: as long as they are good, it really doesn’t matter to me at all what type of film it is 😀
