Everybody who likes monster movies probably has a favorite one. Looking back at the past, there have been so many good ones it is hard to pick a favorite. But for me, the choice has never been hard. At least not after seeing the monster in what some consider to be one of the best action films ever made (myself included). It was a film that was made in the 80’s and featured a young Arnold Schwarzenegger in his golden age of movies. The name of that film was Predator.
In Predator a group of special commandos led by the battlehardened Dutch are sent on a rescue mission deep in the Central American jungle. A group of hostages have been taken by guerrillas, and it is up to Dutch and his group to get them out. At least that is what they are being told. It soon becomes clear, that they are not the first ones who have been sent out on this mission. When they come across the butchered remains of a former rescue party, things are beginning to get very weird. How is it possible that a group of trained soldiers can be caught so completely by surprise? And why would a group of guerrillas skin people and leave them hanging in the jungle? Dutch and his men are about to find out the horrible answers to these questions. A thing that is not of this world has made the jungle his own personal hunting ground, and the hunters will soon become the hunted.
There are certain movies that you have seen so many times, and that still manage to entertain every single one of those times. Predator is one of those films. This is 80’s action film making at it’s best. Schwarzenegger is superb in his role as Dutch and delivers some of the best oneliners out of all his movies. (Who can forget the classic “Get to the chopppppaaaaaa” ). But the real star of the film is the Predator. I remember the first time I laid my eyes on the monster and I almost felt my jaw hitting the ground. Yes Alien is cool, I will not dispute that, but for me Predator will always be the favorite. The creature is just simply put: badass and the ultimate cool guy.
Ofcourse the story in this film is almost non-existent, but seriously who cares about that, when a movie delivers this much tension and terrific action. Accompanied by a fantastic score made by composer Alan Silvestri, there are so many scenes in this movie that are incredible, that it is hard to pick a favorite. Even though this film is now 30 years old, it has withstood the test of time very well. If somehow you have missed out on this film back in the day, track it down if you can. It is a classic action movie, that everyone who has even a remote interest in action films should have seen at least once in his life. Next year we will get a new Predator movie, sadly without Arnold reprising his role. I highly doubt it will be as good as this one though.
I give Predator a 9 out of 10 score.
I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen this film but I never get tired of watching it. One of my favourite movies of all time.
Great post!

Thanks 😊 It’s the same with me. It’s just one of those movies that you pick up every now and again to rewatch it. It just never gets old 😊

This is a great review on a great classic. 😊 yes we can’t forget the chopaa!
I think what makes this special for it’s time are also the different characteristics and the way they humorously talk to each other which is a nice touch to a ‘serious’ movie. Also the design of Predator is quite unique and how it has camouflage detection and the way it senses each of them out. “If it bleeds, we can kill it”. .well..almost.😯

Thank you very much. I had a blast rewatching this film. You are totally right about the characters in the film and the humor it contains. It’s one of those films that you pretty much can recite word for word. There is a review coming up for an equally classic film you might have heard of: the Terminator 😊

I loved the original predator

Yes it was an absolute classic. The 2nd one was not bad either, but did not come close to this one.

Great review of a great film. It just shows that the acting doesn’t have to be top notch for the film to be awesome.
Watching this recently, I was spurred on to listen to the Predator audio books. Love the alien/predator universe.

Thank you very much. I am a total fan of the Alien/Predator universe. Own a lot of the old Dark Horse comics and novels, but did not know about the audiobooks yet 😀

They did an audio drama on audible called Alien: Out of the Shadows. So atmospheric. The voice actress for Ripley even sounded like Sigourney Weaver from the films. That audio drama is probably one of the best I have ever heard.

Predator is right up there with my favorite action movies as well. It was just sheer, tense fun to watch and it’ll always be my favorite movie monster. I have a love for the whole franchise.

You are so right about it being a film that entertains no matter how many times you’ve viewed it. So quotable and barnstorming action.

Amazingly, I have never seen Predator in its entirety. Not too big into monster films. I’ve seen plenty of clips though as I’m a big Arnold Schwarzenegger fan. Sounds like a fantastic movie for fans of the genre though 🙂

Really? Well, I do think this is one of Schwarzenegger’s best films. Yes it is a monstermovie, but it is also one of the best action movies ever made. And the monster is just very cool 😀 Well, as for Arnold…I am planning on doing a review for Terminator, as I coincidentally saw that film recently again as well. 😊

GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!!. I’m surprised no one has said that yet xDD. Man this movie is still a classic. This would have been JCVD big moment as the big bad pred. But nope, he was being a diva about it xDD. The movie almost pokes fun at other monster movies back then. The acting was on point. Mac, Dylan. Can’t say much about the sequel though. Poor Danny G. He had such a massive shoe to fill in. AvP was good, the second one was alright.

Haha, yeah I was pretty surprised about that myself lol 😂 Yeah, I know right, it would have awesome if JCVDwould have been the Predator…such a wasted opportunity. As for the sequel, what I did like about it was the Predator itself. The gadgets he had in that one were awesome (the cutting disc, the spear, very cool). I also liked Predators with Adrien Brody, though not coming even close to the original, it was a pretty decent sequel. The AVP movies were pretty okay..just pure mindless fun. Looking forward to 2018 to see what they have come up with 😊
