I think horror can roughly be categorised into two parts: psychological horror, and the often not very subtle gory horror. I like both genres, it often depends a bit on my mood, but I do have to say that I am more of psychological horror fan myself. It is usually more scary as well, and I do love the jumpscares that are almost always included within those movies. That said, there are also a lot of horrorfilms out there, that have buckets of blood in them, and are very enjoyable in their own way. In Anime enough examples can be found that contain enormous amounts of graphic violence and gore. But I don’t think there has ever been a title that described better what the show is about than Blood-C.
Blood-C tells the story of the young girl Saya. At first glance she seems like a pretty normal girl who lives with her father in a shrine in the woods. She goes to school during the day, and occasionally visits the small town located near her home. But as is so often the case, things are not always what they seem. Because during the night, Saya transforms into a fearsome monster slayer. Fighting creatures called Elder Bairns, the only one who knows about this side of Saya is her father. But when the attacks become more frequent, and the lives of everyone in town are threatened, Saya’s secret is becoming increasingly harder to protect. But just who is Saya? With strange memories beginning to surface in her mind, Saya is beginning to wonder if everything that she had been told is really the truth. The real horror might be more than Saya can handle….
To say that Blood-C is gory, is an understatement. This series contains more blood than 10 horrorfilms mixed together. Literally entire fountains of the red substance are shown in every episode. It contains absolutely incredibly graphic and violent death sequences, and as such is not for the faint of heart. Blood-C is a follow up to the (pretty amazing) anime movie Blood: the last Vampire, which in turn was followed by the series Blood+. Now as you might have guessed, this series is not very subtle. Every episode is basically Saya fighting some kind of new creature, and as such a storyline is almost non-existent. I do say almost, because a very interesting twist in the story that occurs during episode 11, saves it from becoming a really predictable show.
As for the characters in the series, they are very forgettable. Except for Saya, the rest of the cast in this series is very dull, and contain little to no depth at all. This also makes it hard to become attached to characters, and even when they die (and there are a lot of deaths in this anime), you could not care less. The animation style is very good though. The fight sequences, which are the highlights of the show, are cool and amazing to look at. The last thing worth mentioning is the musical score, which sounds epic, especially during the many fights that Saya gets into.
Now, I don’t know exactly why, but there was something about this series that I liked. Yes, it is bloody, and basically every episode is more or less the same, but the series is just very easy to get into and highly enjoyable to look at. If you get put off easily by graphic violence or squeamish at the sight of one drop of blood, you had best avoid this series. When you like action, gory horror, and don’t care if the story is almost not here, you might give this one a try. There will be blood though….oh yes…
I give Blood-C a 7 out of 10 score.
I didn’t mind this but given the genre and style were both big draws, the story still didn’t do much for me even with those late season reveals. It wasn’t bad, but it was pretty forgettable amongst other titles that have appealed more.

I agree, this series was simply okay. A few things were pretty cool, and I did enjoy the twist and sometimes pretty brutal fight sequences, but there are far better shows out there. That is for sure 😊

I think I like in the main character and villain in this anime. Or maybe black & red tone attract me. Anyway, thanks for sharing. :3

I was searching this up the other day so I’m glad you wrote about this to give me more insight into it. I really enjoyed Vampire Hunter D so perhaps this is on par with it being as entertaining. I’m currently finishing Tokyo Ghoul which I highly recommend..It’s gory with a while lot of bloodshed but tied with a great storyline which is the important thing. 😊 This was a great read.

Thank you. I have heard a lot of good things about Tokyo Ghoul, so it is still on my way too long “series to watch encyclopedia 😂😂” As far as story goes, this one almost has no story at all, but there is enough to enjoy, and the twist near the end was kind of interesting. I hope you will enjoy it if you watch it eventually 😊

Yeah, me+gore=no. I don’t even like mild gore. That’s probably why kdramas are like a dream come true for me. Very little gore even in the violent ones, hehe. Although I have been hearing a lot about the violence and disturbing scenes in Voice which has me a bit anxious. I’ll be giving it a try, but hopefully I don’t have to bail because it sounds really intense 😛

Then you should absolutely avoid this series lol. The gore is completely over the top here and quite frankly pretty disturbing at times. Yeah I have heard that too about Voice. I think it is a very dark show, which considering the subject matter does not really surprise me. I hope it is not too intense for you, because it is still a series that really has my interest😊

Does it have enough blood to make a vampire hungry? Ha!
Recently, I’m finding that mere gore bores the hell out of me. That’s partly why I dropped Hellsing. But seems like there’s more than just high pressure cuts to Blood C so I’ll give it a go one day. Plus I loved Blood+ and am interested in the franchise.

I don’t know….since I am only part Vampire, I can’t objectively say if it would make true Vampires hungry. I have to go check on that 😂
Back on topic,it is an okay series. The gore is completely over the top, but there are some interesting elements that just provide enough entertainment to give it a try 😊

Tried that too, but it did not show up at all. Strange 😦 I have added your site to my Google favorites, so I can still keep up to date like that 😀

I will definitely not be watching this anime XD Besides being super gory and bloody, it has no plot to at least tempt me. If there was a great story being told, *maybe* I’d think about it, but not even the amazing plot twist near the end would be able to sell it to me at this point, I think 😛
Still, great review as always! And very eloquent, too 🙂

Haha, thank you very much. Yeah…it was enjoyable for me…but that was about it. I probably will not rewatch this one anytime soon. Currently in the middle of the second season of Knoghts of Sidonia, which is way better. And if you want a series with a great story, but also (some) gore, you might want to check out Psycho Pass 😊

Blood+ is my favorite thing from this franchise. This series had its moments, but I agree it lacked depth. The gory deaths later on did surprise me. Shame that the followup movie was so dull.

I actually haven’t seen blood+ yet, but I probably will at some point. This was one of those series that I would call a guilty pleasure. I actually wanted to gate it, but still enjoyed it quite a bit. And wow that gore was seriously over the top at times lol. But yeah it wasn’t the best series ever made, that is for sure 😊

Me, again :). I just commented on your Another review and just discovered this one. I saw Blood-C after watching Another and I enjoyed it just as much. Again, I saw the death clips on YouTube, they seem to be pretty infamous among the anime community, but it turned out to be the last 10 minutes of the show. The rabbits! Made more sense when you watch the whole thing. I’ve also seen the movie which follows, but have yet to see Blood the Last Vampire (both anime and live-action) and Blood+ (which has a whopping 50 episodes!). Anyway, sorry to bother you again so soon. Great review!

Hello, again! 😊Please don’t say sorry for giving such great comments. It will never bother me in the slightest, especially not since these only help put a smile on my face!😊
Blood C really is one of those guilty pleasure kind of animes. It’s something one should hate, but for some reason don’t hate lol. I really had fun with it. The film that follows this one is something I have yet to see, I plan on doing that quite soon, and probably write a review for it after having seen it.
Blood + has 50 episodes huh? Wow…didn’t know that. Am gonna see if I can track it down and watch it somewhere. It’s been a while since I last saw a horror anime. Figure it’s time for one!
Thanks again for visiting my blog, and the wonderful comments. Really appreciate it! 😊
