Before I am going to start for real with this post, let me just point out to you that I am huge Star Wars fan. I have lost count of the number of times that I have seen the original movies, and own a lot of novels and other merchandise. When the news first arrived about Disney taking over the franchise from Lucas I was filled with fear. And yes I do know that may lead to the Dark Side. My fears pretty much disappeared last year with the release of Episode 7. I loved it from start to finish, and felt it really did justice to the galaxy from far, far away. One thing I did remain skeptical about were the plans for the stand alone movies. The first one has now been unleashed upon us with Force. Today I saw the film for the first time, and the question is, was I worried about nothing?
Rogue One might best be described as Star Wars episode three point five, just to give you a point of reference. The Empire is planning to build a terror weapon to rule the galaxy, and for that they turn to a scientist called Galen Erso. Galen has no love for the Empire, but has no choice but to assist in building the weapon, as his wife and young daughter Jyn are both threatened to be killed. Years later, Jyn has grown up, and has now become a bit of a rebel but is also pretty much a loner. By pure chance however she meets up with a member of the real Rebel Alliance who has been searching for her. Things have become very dire indeed, as the Empire has almost finished building their planet killer. When Jyn finds out that her father might be the one who has pretty much designed the weapon, she is determined to find her father at all cost. With a group of like minded individuals she sets out on a path that will take her to her father, and which might bring a new hope to the galaxy…
So there we have it, the first ever standalone movie of Star Wars. Was it a worthy addition to the Star Wars legacy? I would have to say yes. There are many things in this movie that worked, but it also has it’s flaws. One thing is for sure: this movie is very dark. It is basically a warmovie set in the Star Wars universe. As such, there is some light comedy in the film, but it mostly has a very serious tone to it. The fun things that were truly enjoyable in this film, were the many easter eggs that the movie contained. Any Star Wars fan, will really get a kick out of discovering those. And I am pretty sure that I even might have missed a few.
We get introduced to a whole new cast of characters, and most of these were very enjoyable. Felicity Jones did a fine job in her portrayal of Jyn Erso, and it was also very nice to see Hong Kong legend Donnie Yen having so much fun in his role of the blind Chirrut Imwe. Ben Mendelsohn was also superb as the villain, the evil Director Krennic, a character you are definitely going to hate. The best character however was the robot K-2SO, who produced some much needed comic relief.
The pacing of the film however, was the thing that I felt was not handled very well. The first part of the film felt slow. At those times it also felt that for a reason I could not quite put my finger on, that I wasn’t watching a Star Wars movie. The last 45 minutes of the film though, were absolutely fantastic, and contained one of the best battlescenes of the entire Star Wars franchise. It also shows how desperate things really were for the Rebellion.
At the end of the film there was a question that popped up in my mind though: do we really need these stand alone movies? Even though I liked the movie, it just is not as good as the original trilogy films. As I said this one is a worthy addition to the Star Wars franchise, but with these movies now being released every other year, one has to wonder if this won’t simply become a question of quick cash in films. We will have to wait and see I guess. I do have to admit that the film was truly better than I had expected, and I did enjoy it for the most part. If you are a fan of the Star Wars universe I definitely recommend seeing it. And now all that’s left to do is wait for episode VIII and ofcourse see Rogue One for a second time. May the force be with you…..
I give Rogue One a Star Wars story a 8 out of 10 score.
Hey, I was just reviewing this film as well! What a coincidence! 😀
Anyway, great review! I also like this film. I am not a big fan but I really like Star Wars. I think Rogue One is a good film and fits the timeline really well. 🙂

That really is a coincidence lol 😂 I think we were pretty much working on it at the same time as well 😀 Thanks for the kind words, I liked it a lot, but for me the trilogy films will still be the best 😀

Yeah. What a good coincidence 😂
Yes, the original trilogy films is really the best and really epic. Hard to compete with that. 😀

The question I have to ask is does it add anything to the Franchise other than potential profits? I have this issue with all prequels and while this is a stand alone film does it ultimately matter who designed the Death Star or who these characters are when we know that Luke will blow it up and save the rebels? I still don’t know if I’ll watch this or not but part of me just wonders if they wouldn’t have been better off just telling an original story.

That is the question that I have been asking myself all day as well. Honestly, there were some very cool nods to the original film in this one, that did bring a smile to my face. But as you say, does it add something essential to the existing franchise? For that my answer would have to be no. I am looking forward to Episode 8, as we continue the path that was layed in part 7. As a Star Wars fan I enjoyed the film, but if it would not have been made at all, I guess that would have been okay too. One has to wonder what they have in store for us in the young Han Solo movie (something that I really wish they wouldn’t do, as for me Han Solo is and always will be, Harrison Ford). I agree with you though, I would have much rather seen an original story.

I’m also a big fan of the Star Wars movies, and I’ve been nervous about this one. I just don’t love the idea of a stand alone movie. And while I do appreciate action and well done battle scenes, I have to enjoy the story and characters for them to matter. I’m still weary, but I will definitely keep an open mind. Glad you liked it 🙂

It is not a bad movie, but as I mentioned, the question is do we really need these movies. I would be perfectly fine with things if they only keep the trilogy movies and don’t bring out any more of these stand alone films. That said, there were definitely a few nice things in the movie, and I enjoyed it enough all together 😀

Likewise a huge Star Wars fan and I’m pretty much in agreement with your review. It did feel so alien to begin with but ended feeling as much a part of the saga as any other entry.
I’ll be watching it for a third time soon 🙂

Totally not related, really, but K-2So is played by Alan Tudyk, or Wash from Firefly, and King Candy from Wreck It Ralph.
Yes, just try fitting King Candy in the same box as those other two. Don’t fit, does it?
Alan is a really gifted actor.

Alan is awesome…he also played a very good role in Dollhouse, another (unfortunately) short lived series by Joss Whedon.

Yeah, Joss really should have learned not to work with Fox after Firefly. They kill good shows like he kills beloved characters.

I love Star Wars too, I have done for as long as I can remember. I was more excited than anything else when I heard Disney were taking the reigns for the franchise.
With the exception of a couple of minor grievances I have, I really enjoyed The Force Awakens and Rogue One. I hope there will be more than just character origin stories or between-episodes stuff in the future though.

From what I have heard, Disney plans to stop making trilogy films after episode nine. If that were to be true, I think that would really be a mistake, but we will have to see. With such a rich universe there is plenty more story to tell. I just hope that the quality of the movies that are to be released won’t diminish 😊

At the time I didn’t realize it, but now that I think about it your remark about the pacing of the film is spot on. I think what I really liked about the film was the way in which characters were not so insulated and protected. Often the Star Wars franchise creates a sense of “nothing bad can really happen to the main cast”, while this one was not afraid to really cut characters down.
I think the one thing that really caught my interest early on was the character of Cassian, someone fighting the good fight, but using horrible methods, and the question “If he and others like him walked the straight and narrow path, would the rebellion fall?”
I thought the big battle at the end was very well choreographed. A lot was going on, but I never felt lost.
I am a little skeptical of the volume of new Star Wars films simultaneously being produced, but time will tell. Like many fans, I’m primarily curious about episode 8, but I think the others could be good, if they don’t get too focused on filling in every gap in the franchise timeline.

Yeah, going into this film I knew that several characters would probably not survive the end of this movie, but I did not expect it to be this bad honestly. I am a massive Star Wars fan, but I have heard many friends of mine say that it just did not feel as much as a Star Wars movie. I am concerned about the same thing. I hope that the quality of the films is not going to drop. I am honestly not very interested in a young Han Solo movie as for me, that will always be Harrison Ford. The trailer for Episode 8 looked cool again though, and I can’t wait for that one. Oh well…we only need to wait until the end of december 😂😂

” filled with fear. And yes I do know that may lead to the Dark Side. ” – haha that was funny!
Great review. I think for a SW without all obligatory SW stuff it was good. I absolutely loved the robot and his design – awesome job. Felicity Jones was very lovely. Without these two characters the movie would’ve obviously lost 40% of its charm. And the final battle…yikes

Yes, I have recently rewatched the movie and liked it even better the second time around. I’m not so sure about the next spin off movie though. A movie about the young Han Solo, just doesn’t appeal to me so much. For me Han Solo is Harrison Ford, and he just breathed life into that character. Anyone else that steps into that role just won’t be able to do the same, but I guess we have to wait and see 😊
