It has been quite a while since I last reviewed a horrormovie. Not because I don’t like them, but at Halloween I watched so many of them, that I kind of went cold turkey after that. But as with most addictions, they usually pop back up again, and that is also the case with my horror movie addiction. Then again, the movie I am about to review would almost make me go cold turkey again.
The Damned tells the story of David who is about to get married for the second time in his life. While in Colombia he visits his daughter Jill with his soon to be wife Lauren. Jill is not very happy that her dad is about to get remarried, but eventually agrees to go back with her father, together with a camera crew that is making a documentary with her. While in a ferocious storm, David loses control of the car he was driving in, and they all get stranded. While walking back to civilisation they eventually come upon an old mansion. At first the owner of the mansion, an old man, is reluctant to let them inside. Eventually though, he agrees to let them in, but it soon becomes clear that there is something not quite right. To their shock and horror they come upon a young girl trapped in the basement of the mansion. Who is she, and why did the old man keep her locked up? The answer to that question might be more shocking than they realise…
Yes, it is one of those movies again. A couple of people take a wrong turn, get stranded, and eventually have to fight something or someone to stay alive. Yawn. This concept is really getting old. Is this movie a total loss because of that fact? Well no, not quite. There are a couple of scenes in the movie that make it worth the watch for the horrorfans out there. The acting is also fairly decent, but nothing really spectacular. The movie takes a while to get going, and just when it seems things are about to get interesting, the end is near. There is something that almost redeemed the movie though, and that is the pretty unexpected twist at the end. That was cleverly done, and at least to me it came as a bit of a surprise. In the end though, it was just not enough to save this pretty mediocre horror flick.
I give the Damned a 5 out of 10 score.
Is this on Netflix yet?

Yeah the concept is becoming boring. I really thought ‘Don’t Breathe’ which was almost the same story, people ending up in the wrong house would be the same and ended up going to it this year. But it really scared the hell out of me with the sound effects and sudden scary scenes. I nearly took at least a month gap after that from horror films. So it does matter how peopple take the story even if it is the same concept again. 😁👏 I agree with that.

I have heard that one is supposed to a very good film. Have not yet been able to seen it yet, but am defintely going to. Another great example of a movie that looked like the same thing but ended up being something entirely different was The Cabin in the woods. Great movie, with a completely insane twist 😀

Yes, I remember that movie too😁 .. It was completely thrilling and insane at the end 😂 Loved that too lol

Oh….the premise, indeed, doesn’t sound so original. But I’m interested on that suprising twist you mentioned so I’ll give this a try. Thanks for sharing! (I’m hunting for some horror/mystery shows to watch right now.)

Hmm, horror/mystery shows huh. Might I recommend watching the “Another” anime, if you had not seen it yet. It is one of the best Animeseries I have seen this year. As for tv series : The Strain is very good (it is a bit like the Walking Dead, only with vampires (and not the cuddly kind of vampires lol), the Scream television show is not bad either. And if you can track it down, Harper’s Island is also very interesting. Have fun watching 😀

I actually heard all of them! I’ve watched Another and yes, it was an intriguing horror anime. The Strain has been in my watch-list forever and now you’ve convinced me to get started. I remembered watching Harper’s Island two years ago I think…but I never got to finish it so I’ll have to revisit the entire thing. Thanks for recommending/ reminding!

The originality of the premise is taking my breath away like a piece of toast stuck in my throat
You know what, if I ever get stranded in a remote area I’m either hiding in my car until daylight or taking my chances with the wild outdoors. Because from the way horror movies seem to go, anywhere from rundown cabins to oldass mansions are just disasters waiting to happen.

Haha, I actually spilled my cup of tea when I read the first sentence of your comment 😂😂 But yeah, it was so very original that I seriously could not believe the originality. Don’t know if staying in a car is a good idea though. A truck might come along and drive you off the road (hey, that has never happened before in a movie either 😂😂). As for staying in the wild outdoors…how about wild animals or creatures that might go bump in the night? Hmmm…this might be a very original idea for a movie 😂

R.I.P, tea. You shall be missed.
Yeahhhh, I’ll take my chances. At this point, I’d refuse to go to the cabin/mansion/boathouse/whatever on principle. Same with wild outdoors. For instance, werewolves vs ghosts, I’d take werewolves any day. Ghosts creep me out big time.

Haha…yeah ghosts are pretty hard to fight against…unless you havecsome kind of Magic protection. Chossing between zombies or werewolves, I would take zombies anyway (unless they are the 28 days later variety 😂)

Zombies and werewolves…hmm Taking into consideration the very real possibility of dying, I’d have to pick death by werewolf.
Both would be painful as hell but at least werewolves would have sharp enough teeth. Plus they’d probably go for the throat so it might be over quickly. I don’t want to get eaten by stinking zombies with blunt teeth, man.

Hmm…when you are putting it that way: okay back to death by Werewolf 😀 Wait…..what? 😂😂

I’m glad I could convert you to the ‘grisly death by werewolf’ club.
….What does it say about me that this ain’t even close to the oddest conversation I’ve had with someone?

Nicely written review. Horror is one of my favourite genres, but this one sounds a bit boring.

Thank you very much: appreciate it. I love horror as well, but this one was definitely not one of the better ones. Although the twist at the end was pretty cool 😀

I love all horror, but the psychological variety interests me the most.

True…I love all horror as well, but my favorite kind is definitely the subtle and psychological variety interests me the most as well (although I can also enjoy slasher movies 😀)
